Some additional light on the childhood sexual abuse-psychopathology axis.

This exposition is an attempt to unravel the complexities of the relationship between childhood sexual abuse and adult psychopathology. Four facets of the relationship are examined in some detail: (a) the extent of childhood sexual abuse; (b) the probability that sexual abuse in childhood will result in psychopathology in the adult; (c) the reliability of early life memories in later life; and (d) the role of recovered memory of trauma in the healing process. The conclusions of this logico-empirical analysis are that first, government statistics tend to underestimate the extent of childhood se

Sleep promotes illusory word compositions, a distinct form of false memory.

Extensive evidence supports the beneficial effects of sleep on memory and learning, including the consolidation and reorganization of memories and the extraction of regularities from encoded experiences. Nevertheless, some studies suggest that sleep may also increase false memories, potentially as a byproduct of regularities extraction. Physiologically, time-compressed memory replay in the hippocampus during non-rapid-eye-movement (nREM) sleep is believed to contribute to the consolidation process, although the functional significance of time compression remains elusive. Recently, we proposed

Reports of recovered memories of childhood abuse in therapy in France.

Recovered memories of abuse in therapy are especially controversial if the clients were not aware they were abused before therapy. In the past, such memory recovery has led to legal action, as well as a debate about whether such memories might be repressed, forgotten, or false memories. More than two decades after the height of the controversy, it is unclear to what degree such memories are still recovered today, and to what extent it occurs in France. In our French survey of 1312 participants (Mage = 33; 53% female), 551 reported having done therapy at some point. Of that 551, 33 (6%) indicat

An examination of trait, spontaneous and instructed emotion regulation in dysphoria.

Depression is thought to be characterised by impaired emotion regulation, although the mechanisms of that regulation are not yet well understood. The present study examined trait, spontaneous and instructed emotion regulation in dysphoric (n = 66) and non-dysphoric (n = 86) participants. Participants were randomly assigned to use reappraisal while watching a sadness-inducing film clip (instructed emotion regulation condition) or were not given specific viewing instructions (spontaneous emotion regulation condition). Participants also completed trait measures of emotion regulation. Dysphoric in

Responding to intrusions in obsessive-compulsive disorder: the roles of neuropsychological functioning and beliefs about thoughts.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of the current study was to examine cognitive and psychological factors hypothesized to affect responding to intrusions in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). METHODS: A group of individuals diagnosed with OCD (N = 22) was compared to a social phobia (SP) group (N = 25) and a nonclinical control group (N = 24). Participants performed a battery of neuropsychological tasks, completed self-report measures, and engaged in a self-relevant thought suppression task. RESULTS: Participants in the OCD group demonstrated worse working memory and response inhibition o

Recantation: a case study.

This case study explores the problem of recantation, the act of publically declaring that a former disclosure is untrue. Recantation in child sexual abuse cases can be devastating for forensic teams who work with victims of sexual abuse and put the victims of CSA at increased risk of further child sexual abuse. Recanting complicates efforts to protect victims, or other potential victims. When recantation occurs, victims are often placed back in the situation where the abuse occurred, the perpetrator has continued access to the victim and the abuse continues. To prevent recantation, Forensic nu

Explaining the forgetting and recovery of abuse and trauma memories: possible mechanisms.

Much attention has been focused on memories of abuse that are allegedly forgotten or repressed then recovered. By retrospectively surveying more than 1,400 college women, the authors investigated (a) the frequency with which temporary forgetting is reported for child sexual abuse experiences as opposed to other childhood abuse and traumas and (b) exactly how victims characterize their forgetting experiences in terms of various competing cognitive mechanisms. Rates of forgetting were similar among victims who experienced sexual abuse, physical abuse, and multiple types of traumas. Victims of ot

Memory focused interventions (MFI) as a therapeutic strategy in hypnotic psychotherapy.

The prospect of utilizing memory plasticity (the constructive and transitory nature of memory) for therapeutic purposes has not been widely recognized. However, a number of theoretical and clinical venues throughout the last century have shown its potential application. Intensive research conducted during these last decades, pointed out the possibility of influencing human memory in relation to new memories and their specific components. Moreover, the research showed the feasibility of planting alternative early childhood memories and thus altering memories of personal history. Additionally, r

A prospective examination of catastrophic misinterpretations and experiential avoidance in emotional distress following loss.

This prospective study examined the role of experiential avoidance and catastrophic misinterpretations of grief reactions in emotional distress following the death of a loved one. Eighty-two bereaved individuals completed measures of experiential avoidance, catastrophic misinterpretations, and symptom of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) and depression within the first half year of bereavement, and again completed measures assessing PGD and depression severity 1 year later. The findings showed that experiential avoidance was significantly correlated with endorsement of catastrophic misinterpretat

Task compliance predicts suppression-induced forgetting in a large sample.

Suppression-induced forgetting (SIF) refers to a memory impairment resulting from repeated attempts to stop the retrieval of unwanted memory associates. SIF has become established in the literature through a growing number of reports built upon the Think/No-Think (TNT) paradigm. Not all individuals and not all reported experiments yield reliable forgetting, however. Given the reliance on task instructions to motivate participants to suppress target memories, such inconsistencies in SIF may reasonably owe to differences in compliance or expectations as to whether they will again need to retriev

A Deese-Roediger-McDermott study of trauma memory among employees of New York City companies affected by the September 11, 2001, attacks.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been found to be associated with abnormalities in memory function. This relationship has not previously been studied using the Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) false memory paradigm in disaster-exposed populations. METHODS: Three years after the September 11, 2001 (9/11) attacks, 281 participants from a volunteer sample of 379, recruited from 8 companies directly affected by the attacks, completed an interview about their disaster experience, a structured diagnostic interview, and the DRM paradigm. RESULTS: It was hypothesized that participa

Biographical truths and their clinical consequences: understanding 'embodied memories' in a third psychoanalysis with a traumatized patient recovered from severe poliomyelitis.

The relationship between 'narrative' and 'historical-biographical truth' in psychoanalytic treatment has become the subject of many controversial debates in recent years. Findings of contemporary memory research have lead to great scepticism as to whether therapists are able objectively and reliably to reconstruct biographical events on the basis of their observations in the therapeutic situation. Some authors even claim that psychoanalysts should concentrate exclusively on observing the here and now of the patient's behaviour within the transference relationship to the analyst. In this paper

Common psychological defenses seen in the treatment of sexually abused adolescents.

The negative psychological aftermath of sexual abuse is complex and has a direct correlation with the establishment of maladaptive defense mechanisms. Long-term psychotherapy can allow the adolescent patient to establish the cognitive and affective connections to the original trauma and work through the residue of guilt and shame. As mastery is achieved through the treatment process, higher level defenses should become more pronounced. Because the repressed memories related to the sexual trauma need to be unfolded slowly, so that the defensive capacities are not overwhelmed, treatment may need

Blunted cortisol response to acute pre-learning stress prevents misinformation effect in a forced confabulation paradigm.

Research examining the effects of stress on false memory formation has been equivocal, partly because of the complex nature of stress-memory interactions. A major factor influencing stress effects on learning is the timing of stress relative to encoding. Previous work has shown that brief stressors administered immediately before learning enhance long-term memory. Thus, we predicted that brief stress immediately before learning would decrease participants' susceptibility to subsequent misinformation and reduce false memory formation. Eighty-four male and female participants submerged their han

[The role of inhibition in obsessional-compulsive disorders].

INTRODUCTION: The nature of neuropsychological mechanisms underlying the clinical picture of obsessions and compulsions has not been clearly determined. A number of studies has emphasized the role of cognitive deficits, but diversity of methodology and overlapping of clinical sub-groups have not established a specific cognitive functioning of these patients. The studies carried out on executive functions have, however, helped to identify the important role that both inhibition and cognitive flexibility play in obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms. Most of them have found that a deficit of inhibi

Emotional suppression tendencies as predictors of symptoms, mood, and coping appraisals during AC chemotherapy for breast cancer treatment.

Tendencies to suppress negative emotions have been shown to predict adjustment to cancer and cancer progression. We examined whether emotional suppression, in terms of both general and emotion-specific tendencies, predict symptom reports, mood states, and coping appraisals during adriamycin/doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide/cytoxan chemotherapy for breast cancer. Forty participants completed a measure yielding scores for anxiety suppression, anger suppression, depression suppression, and total emotional suppression. They then reported their experiences of 34 physical symptoms, mood, and coping eff
