Oxytocin in growth, reproduction, restoration and health.

This article summarizes my scientific work and describes some personal experiences during this period. After my basal medical training (MD) (1971), I obtained a PhD in pharmacology (1976) and ended up as a professor of Physiology. My initial studies were within the field of gastroenterology. I showed that the gastrointestinal hormone gastrin, which stimulates HCL secretion in the stomach, was released in response to stimulation of the vagal nerve. Later I showed that the entire endocrine system of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract that promotes digestion and anabolic metabolism and growth was un

The impact of Bisphenol-A on human reproductive health.

Bisphenol-A (BPA) is a recognized endocrine-disrupting chemical used to produce several consumer goods and products. There has been widespread exposure to BPA because of increased industrial production and use of BPA-containing products. As a result of these exposures, BPA is found in several human body fluids and can cause endocrine disruption by interfering with hormone signaling pathways and epigenetic modifications. Therefore, human reproductive health and development have been adversely affected by BPA. This review aimed to consolidate existing knowledge on the impact of BPA on human repr

Food with Influence in the Sexual and Reproductive Health.

BACKGROUND: Sexual dysfunction and infertility are conditions with high prevalence in the general population. Nutritional factors have been reported to have an impact on sexual and reproductive health. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review is to summarize the data on nutritional factors that have influence on male and female sexual and reproductive function, including nutritional status, specific foods (e.g. dairy food), nutrients and other food components and dietary supplements. METHOD: A literature search was performed using Cochrane Library, Medline and Science Direct databases without time

Human reproduction and health: an evolutionary perspective.

According to life history theory, increased investment in reproductive function (physiology and behaviour) at different times throughout the life course affects the risk of many diseases and, ultimately, longevity. Although genetic factors contribute to interindividual and interpopulation variation in reproductive traits, the dominant source of variability is phenotypic plasticity during development and adult life. Reproductive traits in both sexes evolved sensitivity to ecological conditions, as reflected in contemporary associations of hormone concentrations with geographical setting, nutrit

Mercury in the environment: effect on health and reproduction.

Mercury is a heavy metal that is found naturally in the environment in various forms. Human activity can release mercury into the air, water, and soil. Mercury is also released into the environment after its conversion to methylmercury by bacteria. Mercury was once used in medicine, but the medicinal aspect changed because of its devastating poisoning effect on humans and animals. Today, mercury is one of the most potent neurotoxins known, having a number of adverse health effects in animals and humans. As the sources of mercury are many, the general population is exposed to mercury in day-to-

Centering disability visibility in reproductive health care: Dismantling barriers to achieve reproductive equity.

Access to comprehensive and culturally competent reproductive health care is essential for individuals and communities to realize and achieve health and well-being, as one prefers. The disability community represents a diverse group of individuals with a wide spectrum of functional, physical, sensory, and/or neurodivergent abilities. Existing barriers to reproductive health care are a consequence of environmental and attitudinal barriers, not from the disabilities themselves. People with disabilities are also not frequently centered or included in discussions surrounding reproductive rights. T

The microbiome: a determinant of reproductive health and fitness?

There is a growing appreciation of the importance played by the reproductive tract microbiome in shaping fertility and reproductive health. Historically viewed as a microbially simple niche, the lower female reproductive tract is now recognized to harbor dynamic microbial communities that interact with host physiology to influence fertility, pregnancy outcomes, and reproductive disorders. Increasing evidence also implicates the comparatively low-biomass microbiomes of the upper female reproductive tract and the male reproductive tract in reproductive health. Implications of the Law on Reproductive and Sexual Health.

The United States has a longstanding history of using laws to define the scope of government involvement in controlling personal matters related to sex and sexuality. Although the government serves a valuable role in protecting and promoting public health, sexual and reproductive health is unduly impacted by social stigma in ways that other fields of medicine are not. Consequently, this care is often singled out by legislation that limits rather than protects this care. Health care professionals are uniquely positioned to advocate for legal protection of the patient-provider relationship and f

The effects of microbiota on reproductive health: A review.

Reproductive issues are becoming an increasing global problem. There is increasing interest in the relationship between microbiota and reproductive health. Stable microbiota communities exist in the gut, reproductive tract, uterus, testes, and semen. Various effects (e.g., epigenetic modifications, nervous system, metabolism) of dysbiosis in the microbiota can impair gamete quality; interfere with zygote formation, embryo implantation, and embryo development; and increase disease susceptibility, thus adversely impacting reproductive capacity and pregnancy. The maintenance of a healthy microbio

The gut-reproductive axis: Bridging microbiota balances to reproductive health and fetal development.

The gut microbiota is a highly complex microbial community residing in the digestive tract of humans and animals, closely linked to host health. Dysbiosis within the gut microbiota has been associated with various diseases. Moreover, it interacts with the female reproductive system's microbiota, influencing maternal reproductive homeostasis. Although the gut microbiota holds potential for treating reproductive system diseases and modulating offspring fertility, research in this domain remains limited. This review examines the relationship between both balanced and imbalanced gut microbiota and

Modernizing Sexual Health and Reproductive Health Education to Optimize Military Readiness.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) account for over half of all reportable medical events in the military health system. The military reported a 98% increase in syphilis cases among service members between 2015 and 2023. From 2015 to 2019, the rates of chlamydia and gonorrhea in the Army increased 31% and 49%, respectively. Despite the high morbidity attributed to STIs, there is no standardized, evidence-based sexual and reproductive health education curriculum throughout the military. However, civilian studies on interactive digital interventions (IDIs) as well as interactive computer-bas

Trends in reproductive health in Israel: implications for environmental health policy.

Nearly two decades ago, researchers first reported that endocrine disrupting chemicals in the environment were affecting reproductive health in the general population. The purpose of this article is to examine the evidence of adverse reproductive health trends in Israel and to explore implications for environmental health policy in Israel. We reviewed studies and data in Israel regarding trends in reproductive health indices, specifically: breast and testis cancer, hypospadias, sperm quality, male factor infertility, and age at menarche. The data provide some evidence of adverse reproductive t

CF and male health: Sexual and reproductive health, hypogonadism, and fertility.

Over 30,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF), and over 50% of those with CF are male. Men with CF face specific and sometimes difficult sexual and reproductive health (SRH) issues, including infertility and hypogonadism. Male infertility affects over 95% of men with CF, with obstructive azoospermia resulting from congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens being the primary cause of infertility. SRH education for males with CF represents an important opportunity for clinical improvement, as the majority of men with CF know that their disease impacts thei

Privatisation of health services and the reproductive health of rural Chinese women.

China's rural health care system has undergone major changes since the early 1980s, when the country began privatising rural health services. Following fiscal devolution, the rural primary health service was transformed into a fee-for-service system, dependent on the availability of local resources. This article reports some of the results of a study undertaken in 1994-96 to examine the impact of privatization on financing, provision and use of reproductive health services by women in two rural counties in Yunnan Province, China. The most common self-reported symptoms of reproductive morbidity
