Into the unknown: a literature review of helminths of amphibians and reptiles in Mesoamerica.

BACKGROUND: Helminths are an important but understudied component of amphibian and reptile biodiversity, particularly in Mesoamerica, a global biodiversity and cultural hotspot. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive literature review of helminth parasites reported from amphibians and reptiles across Mesoamerica, yielding 71 publications with 1195 specimen records. Data extracted from each article included geographical location of the report, co-author affiliation and country of origin, host and parasite taxonomic details, deposition in taxonomic collections, and pathological data. In addition

Glutamic acid decarboxylase immunoreactivity in the olfactory bulb of a reptile.

The objective is to determine the distribution of glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) in the olfactory bulb of a crocodilian, Caiman crocodilus . Avidin-biotin immunohistochemical methodology using a polyclonal antibody to GAD raised in sheep was employed. The following controls were used: substitution of the primary antibody with preimmune sheep serum at concentrations equal to that of the primary antibody; omission of the primary antibody; and omission of the primary antibody and biotinylated rabbit antisheep immunoglobulin. No GAD (+) cells were observed in the control sections. Based on cell

A Modified Reptile Search Algorithm for Numerical Optimization Problems.

The reptile search algorithm (RSA) is a swarm-based metaheuristic algorithm inspired by the encirclement and hunt mechanisms of crocodiles. Compared with other algorithms, RSA is competitive but still suffers from low population diversity, unbalanced exploitation and exploration, and the tendency to fall into local optima. To overcome these shortcomings, a modified variant of RSA, named MRSA, is proposed in this paper. First, an adaptive chaotic reverse learning strategy is employed to enhance the population diversity. Second, an elite alternative pooling strategy is proposed to balance exploi

Cardiovascular Drugs in Avian, Small Mammal, and Reptile Medicine.

Cardiovascular disease, including congestive heart failure, pericardial disease, and atherosclerosis, is becoming increasingly better recognized in companion birds, small mammals, and reptiles. A wide range of medications is available to treat these conditions, including diuretics, vasodilators, positive and negative inotropes, antiarrhythmic agents, and pentoxifylline. This review systematically discusses each of these drug classes and their potential applications in exotic species. Although treatment approaches remain largely empirical and extrapolated from small animal and human medicine, t

Risk factors for invasive reptile-associated salmonellosis in children.

Reptile-associated salmonellosis (RAS) in children has been reported primarily due to direct contact with turtles, but recently also due to indirect contact with more exotic reptiles, causing disease in infants. To evaluate risk factors for RAS, we reviewed the RAS cases published in the literature since 1965. A case was defined as a child ≤18 years of age with an epidemiological link by identification of Salmonella enterica in cultures from both the affected child and the exposed reptile. We identified a total of 177 otherwise healthy children (median age 1.0 years, range 2 days to 17.0 years

Deleterious mutations of a claw keratin in multiple taxa of reptiles.

We have recently shown that homologs of mammalian hair keratins are expressed in the claws of the green anole lizard, Anolis carolinensis. To test whether reptilian hair keratin homologs are functionally associated with claws, we investigated the conservation of the prototypical reptilian hair keratin homolog, hard acidic keratin 1 (HA1), in representative species from all main clades of reptiles. A complete cDNA of HA1 was cloned from the claw-forming epidermis of the lacertid lizard Podarcis sicula, and partial HA1 gene sequences could be amplified from genomic DNA of tuatara, lizards, gekko

Different genomic evolutionary rates in the various reptile lineages.

Although Reptiles occupy a strategic position among terrestrial vertebrates, studies of the composition and evolution of their genome are scarce. The cytogenetic analysis of nearly 1400 species evidenced different karyotypical evolutionary rates and different G-banding structures in turtles and crocodiles on the one hand and squamates on the other. A similar dichotomy was also identified through the study of the quantitative and compositional characteristics of the genome. The different evolutionary rates of chromosome morphology and genome size and composition and the diversification of codin

Identification and characterization of amelogenin genes in monotremes, reptiles, and amphibians.

Two features make the tooth an excellent model in the study of evolutionary innovations: the relative simplicity of its structure and the fact that the major tooth-forming genes have been identified in eutherian mammals. To understand the nature of the innovation at the molecular level, it is necessary to identify the homologs of tooth-forming genes in other vertebrates. As a first step toward this goal, homologs of the eutherian amelogenin gene have been cloned and characterized in selected species of monotremes (platypus and echidna), reptiles (caiman), and amphibians (African clawed toad).

Evaluation of the infectivity of Trichinella spp. for reptiles (Caiman sclerops).

Experimental inoculation with nine well-characterised Trichinella isolates was performed on caimans (Caiman sclerops) to determine their infectivity for reptiles belonging to the family Crocodilidae. As controls, the same larval batches of Trichinella isolates were inoculated into mice and guinea pigs. It was suggested that Trichinella pseudospiralis was more likely to infect reptiles than encapsulating species, but whereas all Trichinella species established in mice and guinea pigs, the caimans remained negative. The finding that caimans could not be experimentally infected contrasts with a r

[Distribution of GABA-immunoreactive elements in the reptile amygdaloid complex].

GABA-immunoreactive (GABA-I) elements (neuronal somata and neuropile) are detected in turtle Emys orbicularis and lizard Ophysaurus spodus in all structures of ventral and dorsal parts of amygdaloid complex (AC) considered as phylogenetic more ancient and younger, respectively by means of the immunohistochemical method. Their maximal quantity in the ventral section of AC is found in the lateral region, lesser--in the ventral, central and medial regions. Besides in lizards a specialized laminar distribution of GABA-I elements in n. sphaericus is observed. GABA-I neurons are also detected in str

Spinal Deformities in Wild Reptiles: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Spinal deformities-such as kyphosis, scoliosis, and lordosis-are observed across all major vertebrate groups. Reports in wild reptiles are increasing but are mainly published in natural history notes as curiosities, with little exploration of their aetiology, pathology, prevalence, or consideration of potential ecological, evolutionary, and life history implications. Addressing this gap, I compiled the most comprehensive database to date by reviewing the peer-reviewed and grey literature and collecting unpublished records via standardised social media inquiries. I identified 690 observations f

Case Report: Non-typhoidal Salmonella infections transmitted by reptiles and amphibians.

Non-typhoidal Salmonella infections (NTSI) can cause bacterial diarrhea, mostly leading to self-limiting gastroenteritis. However, in at-risk populations, NTSI can have severe complications. As transmission is most commonly foodborne, infection is rare in the breast- or bottle-fed very young. Another route is increasingly implicated, however, in newborns and infants especially: Contact with reptiles and amphibians. We describe infection with Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica ser. Monschaui (S. Monschaui), transmitted from bearded dragons, in a three-week-old boy. The boy initially appeared w

Pet Reptiles: A Potential Source of Transmission of Multidrug-Resistant Salmonella.

Salmonella spp. is widely considered one of the most important zoonotic pathogens worldwide. The close contact between reptiles and their owners provides favourable conditions for the transmission of zoonotic pathogen infections, and ~6% of human salmonellosis cases are acquired after direct or indirect contact with reptiles. Moreover, antimicrobial resistance is one of the most important health threats of the twenty-first century and has been reported in Salmonella strains isolated from pet reptiles, which could entail therapeutic consequences for their owners and breeders. The aim of this st

[Aerobic bacteria from skin lesions in reptiles and their antimicrobial susceptibility].

OBJECTIVE: Bacterial skin infections are common in reptiles. Although many such infections are influenced by multifactorial problems, specific treatment of bacterial infections is an important consideration. The objective of this study was to evaluate the range of aerobic bacteria in skin lesions of reptiles and to determine their antimicrobial susceptibility. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Swabs of skin lesions from 219 reptiles were cultured for aerobic bacteria between January 2017 and June 2018. Isolates were identified based on growth on selective agar plates, biochemical parameters, as well as M

Diagnosis of gastrointestinal parasites in reptiles: comparison of two coprological methods.

BACKGROUND: Exotic reptiles have become increasingly common domestic pets worldwide and are well known to be carriers of different parasites including some with zoonotic potential. The need of accurate diagnosis of gastrointestinal endoparasite infections in domestic reptiles is therefore essential, not only for the well-being of captive reptiles but also for the owners. Here, two different approaches for the detection of parasite stages in reptile faeces were compared: a combination of native and iodine stained direct smears together with a flotation technique (CNF) versus the standard SAF-me

Variations in mitochondrial tRNA gene organization of reptiles as phylogenetic markers.

Amplification and sequencing of mitochondrial DNA regions corresponding to three major clusters of transfer RNA genes from a variety of species representing major groups of birds and reptiles revealed some new variations in tRNA gene organization. First, a gene rearrangement from tRNA(His)-tRNA(Ser)(AGY)-tRNA(Leu)(CUN) to tRNA(Ser)(AGY)-tRNA(His)tRNA(Leu)(CUN) occurs in all three crocodilians examined (alligator, caiman, and crocodile). In addition an exceptionally long spacer region between the genes for NADH dehydrogenase subunit 4 and tRNA(Ser)(AGY) is found in caiman. Second, in congruence

Piebaldism and chromatophore development in reptiles are linked to the tfec gene.

Reptiles display great diversity in color and pattern, yet much of what we know about vertebrate coloration comes from classic model species such as the mouse and zebrafish.1,2,3,4 Captive-bred ball pythons (Python regius) exhibit a remarkable degree of color and pattern variation. Despite the wide range of Mendelian color phenotypes available in the pet trade, ball pythons remain an overlooked species in pigmentation research. Here, we investigate the genetic basis of the recessive piebald phenotype, a pattern defect characterized by patches of unpigmented skin (leucoderma). We performed whol
