Stroke-induced synergistic phase shifting and its possible implications for recovery mechanisms.

Among other diminished motor capabilities, survivors of a stroke often exhibit pathological joint synergies. With respect to the upper limbs, these deficits diminish coordination in reaching, pointing, and daily task performance. Past research on pathological synergies suggests that the synergistic relationship between joints is different for flexion than in extension. One explanation for different flexion and extension synergies is that there exists a time difference between the joint being volitionally moved and the joint that moves in synergy. The goal of this research was to measure these

No Olfactory Compensation in Food-related Hazard Detection Among Blind and Deaf Adults: A Psychophysical Approach.

The exposure-driven olfactory compensation associated with sensory loss is likely to be observed in assessment of food-related dangers. Therefore, in the current study we tested the hypothesis that olfactory compensation occurs in the case of protection from food-related hazards. We compared thresholds for detection of an unpleasant rotten food odor (fermented fish sauce) in four groups of subjects: blind subjects (n = 100), sighted controls (n = 100), deaf subjects (n = 74) and hearing controls (n = 99). Overall, we observed no significant differences in smell acuity between the blind and dea

Energetics of nose and mouth breathing, body size, body composition, and nose volume in young adult males and females.

This research tests the relative ability of body size factors and sex to explain variation in nose volume and to explain metabolic measures during rest and moderate exercise in 50 young adults. It uses standard anthropometric measures plus two new measures of nose morphology (nose/face angle and nose volume) and evaluates body composition with a device for air displacement plethysmography. Standard physiological measures were obtained in nose-only and mouth-only breathing conditions with subjects at rest and using moderate exercise. A factor representing linear and bulk measures of body size a

Revisiting the Concept of Subjective Tolerability to Antipsychotic Medications in Schizophrenia and its Clinical and Research Implications: 30 Years Later.

Schizophrenia is a long-term psychiatric disorder that impacts important mental functions and requires indefinite treatment, as well as psychosocial and economic support. The introduction of chlorpromazine, the first antipsychotic, and the subsequent development of a long list of similar dopamine-blocking antipsychotic medications, has changed the treatment of schizophrenia as medications have become the cornerstone of clinical management. The enthusiasm that greeted the introduction of antipsychotics was soon tempered by the realisation that they induced significant side effects, such as extr

Sex-Based Differences in Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound and Self-Reported Symptoms After Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

The possibility of sex-related differences in mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) severity and recovery remains a controversial subject. With some studies showing that female subjects suffer a longer period of symptom recovery, while others have failed to demonstrate differences. In this study, we explored the sex-related effects of mTBI on self-reported symptoms and transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD) measured features in an adolescent population. Fifty-eight subjects were assessed-at different points post-injury-after suffering an mTBI. Subjects answered a series of symptom questions before

Trichotillomania: A perspective from bibliometric analysis.

Aim: Trichotillomania, an obsessive-compulsive-related disorder, is defined by the recurrent act of pulling out one's own hair from different areas of the body. Despite the considerable body of research dedicated to the subject of trichotillomania, the overarching trends that unify these studies remain obscure. The purpose of the present bibliometric analysis was to ascertain these trends.Method: To achieve this objective, we conducted a thorough search of publications in the Web of Science database and subsequently evaluated the acquired data using VOSviewer software. Results: The most cited a

EQUATOR Network Mapping Review for Dysphagia Research.

PURPOSE: The EQUATOR Network is an international initiative aimed at improving published health research through use of reporting guidelines. We conducted a review to determine the extent to which EQUATOR Network guidelines contain recommendations relevant for dysphagia research in human subjects. METHOD: We downloaded all 542 EQUATOR Network guidelines on November 8, 2022. Each guideline was reviewed by two independent raters and judged for relevance to dysphagia and related fields (e.g., otolaryngology, gastroenterology). Dysphagia-relevant guidelines pertaining to quantitative human subjec

Migraine disability, pain catastrophizing, and headache severity are associated with evoked pain and targeted by mind-body therapy.

Meta-analysis suggests that migraine patients are no more sensitive to experimentally evoked pain than healthy control subjects. At the same time, studies have linked some migraine symptoms to quantitative sensory testing (QST) profiles. Unfortunately, previous studies associating migraine symptoms and QST have important methodological shortcomings, stemming from small sample sizes, and frequent use of univariate statistics for multivariate research questions. In the current study, we seek to address these limitations by using a large sample of episodic migraine patients (n = 103) and a multiv

Comorbidity of infectious diseases and anxiety disorders in adults and its association with quality of life: a community study.

OBJECTIVE: Infectious diseases and anxiety disorders are common and both are associated with substantial burden to individual, families, and society. A better understanding of their association may be helpful in explicating possible etiological mechanisms related to both. The goal of the current study was to investigate the relationship between specific infectious diseases and anxiety disorders among adults in the community, and to examine whether the co-occurrence of the two is associated with poorer quality of life compared to subjects with one or neither condition. METHODS: We used data fr

The impact of stress related disorders on quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Some new studies have shown a significant connection between post-traumatic stress disorder and impairment of the quality of life (QoL), whereas, to our knowledge, research on the connection between other disorders of the stress related group and quality of life do not exist. The objective of our study was to assess the connection between stress related disorders and the quality of life. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We studied the quality of life in 160 subjects who have experienced certain stressogenic life events. Within the first group (80 subjects) a certain stress related disorder w

Suitability of Automated Writing Measures for Clinical Trial Outcome in Writer's Cramp.

BACKGROUND: Writer's cramp (WC) dystonia is a rare disease that causes abnormal postures during the writing task. Successful research studies for WC and other forms of dystonia are contingent on identifying sensitive and specific measures that relate to the clinical syndrome and achieve a realistic sample size to power research studies for a rare disease. Although prior studies have used writing kinematics, their diagnostic performance remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of automated measures that distinguish subjects with WC from healthy volunt

Community-Engaged Research With Latino Dementia Caregivers: Overcoming Challenges in Community Advisory Board Development.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Latinos caring for a person with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) have the highest prevalence of caregiving. Yet, they are less likely to benefit from evidence-based interventions given their continued underrepresentation in ADRD-related research. Community advisory boards (CABs) have the potential to address barriers to research for underrepresented communities; however, there are complexities to establishing and sustaining CABs. This article describes how our work addressed challenges in CABs related to unbalanced power relations, language barriers,

Disentangling within- and between-subject correlations in cognitive models: The essential role of hierarchical estimation.

Cognitive models, such as evidence-accumulation models, are increasingly used in individual differences research in psychology and neuroscience. By computing correlations between cognitive model parameters across participants, researchers aim to understand how the psychological processes the parameters represent relate to one another and jointly determine performance. It is generally acknowledged that cognitive models can be challenging to estimate due to strong within-subject correlations among the parameters, which are embedded in the model's likelihood function. What is less often recognize

Subjective alcohol responses in a cross-sectional, field-based study of adolescents and young adults: Effects of age, drinking level, and dependence/consequences.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents are physically, cognitively, socially, and emotionally different than adults in ways that may partially explain why alcohol misuse typically develops during this period. Ample animal-science evidence and nascent ecological evidence points toward developmentally limited differences in sensitivity to alcohol's stimulatory and sedative effects. Field-based research methods were used to test for such age-related differences in a sample of adolescents through young adults. Potential moderating influences of estimated blood alcohol content (eBAC), as well as typical consumpti

What is esports? A systematic scoping review and concept analysis of esports.

This study conducted a systematic scoping review to collect definitions and explanations of esports and its related concepts in the existing literature. A thematic coding approach was used to screen possible disagreements and issues between the different characteristics of esports as presented in the existing definitions. Based on a critical discussion, the results of the coding were combined with the objective facts of the current esports industry and theories from similar fields to reconstruct the construction of an esports definition. In addition, the relationship between esports and its re

Validation of the Gambling Refusal Self-Efficacy Questionnaire for Chinese undergraduate students.

Although research on self-efficacy in the gambling literature took place more than 25 years ago, only in the recent decade did researchers attempt to develop valid and reliable measures of gambling-related self-efficacy. Recently Casey et al. (J Gambl Stud 24:229-246, 2008) developed the Gambling Refusal Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (GRSEQ) in an Australian sample, which is a valuable tool for gambling research. The first objective of this study is to validate the measure in a new sample. Given that previous research on Chinese's gamblers' self-efficacy is lacking, and that related research oft
