Wheezing Sound Separation Based on Informed Inter-Segment Non-Negative Matrix Partial Co-Factorization.

Wheezing reveals important cues that can be useful in alerting about respiratory disorders, such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Early detection of wheezing through auscultation will allow the physician to be aware of the existence of the respiratory disorder in its early stage, thus minimizing the damage the disorder can cause to the subject, especially in low-income and middle-income countries. The proposed method presents an extended version of Non-negative Matrix Partial Co-Factorization (NMPCF) that eliminates most of the acoustic interference caused by normal respiratory sounds

Cough Audio Recognition for Early Detection of Respiratory Diseases: Algorithm Development and Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Coughing is a common clinical symptom and a protective respiratory reflex closely associated with various respiratory system diseases. The acoustic characteristics of cough sounds are influenced by underlying pathological factors, with distinct acoustic signatures corresponding to different etiologies. Through rigorous analysis of these sounds, rapid identification and preliminary diagnosis of related conditions may be achieved. This approach holds great potential for broad application in mobile health and ubiquitous health platforms. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the app

Bispectral analysis of tracheal breath sounds for Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a respiratory disorder with serious consequences that is characterized by repetitive cessation of breathing for more than 10s often associated with a drop of more than 4% in the blood's Oxygen saturation level. The gold standard for OSA diagnosis is full-night Polysomnography (PSG), which is a time-consuming, inconvenient, and costly assessment. On the other hand, our team has showed that the analysis of tracheal respiratory sounds recorded during wakefulness holds promises to be used as a simple and effective tool for screening moderate and severe OSA. In this

Air-borne and tissue-borne sensitivities of bioacoustic sensors used on the skin surface.

Measurements of body sounds on the skin surface have been widely used in the medical field and continue to be a topic of current research, ranging from the diagnosis of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases to the monitoring of voice dosimetry. These measurements are typically made using light-weight accelerometers and/or air-coupled microphones attached to the skin. Although normally neglected, air-borne sounds generated by the subject or other sources of background noise can easily corrupt such recordings, which is particularly critical in the recording of voiced sounds on the skin surface

Respiratory Diseases Diagnosis Using Audio Analysis and Artificial Intelligence: A Systematic Review.

Respiratory diseases represent a significant global burden, necessitating efficient diagnostic methods for timely intervention. Digital biomarkers based on audio, acoustics, and sound from the upper and lower respiratory system, as well as the voice, have emerged as valuable indicators of respiratory functionality. Recent advancements in machine learning (ML) algorithms offer promising avenues for the identification and diagnosis of respiratory diseases through the analysis and processing of such audio-based biomarkers. An ever-increasing number of studies employ ML techniques to extract meani

Diagnostic value of visual stethoscopes for detecting bronchospasm in a patient under general anesthesia - A case report.

BACKGROUND: Bronchospasm is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication during anesthesia that requires prompt recognition and management. Traditional auscultation plays a key role but is limited in objective interpretation and continuous monitoring. CASE: We report a case of intraoperative bronchospasm during laparoscopic surgery, detected early through real-time acoustic visualization using a digitalized esophageal stethoscope. The visualization of lung sounds facilitated the rapid identification of expiratory wheezing and abnormal spectrogram patterns characteristic of bronchospas

Acoustical signal properties for cardiac/respiratory activity and apneas.

Traditionally, auscultation is applied to the diagnosis of either respiratory disturbances by respiratory sounds or cardiac disturbances by cardiac sounds. In addition, for sleep apnea syndrome diagnosis, snoring sounds are also monitored. The present study was aimed at synchronous detection of all three sound components (cardiac, respiratory, and snoring) from a single spot. The sounds were analyzed with respect to the cardiorespiratory activity, and to the detection and classification of apneas. Sound signals from 30 subjects including 10 apnea patients were detected by means of a microphone

[Research Progress of Breath Sound Analysis in Children with Bronchial Asthma].

Bronchial asthma is a common chronic respiratory disease, and its diagnosis is mainly based on symptoms, signs, and pulmonary function test.Wheezing is a major symptom of asthma attack, which shows no obvious sign in the early stage while appears after the disease has progressed. Therefore, bronchial asthma is difficult to be detected in early stages, which often leads to worsening of the disease conditions.Pulmonary function test can effectively monitor upper and lower airway abnormalities and is currently the main means for monitoring asthma. However, its accuracy is highly dependent on patient's mot

Clinical presentation, auscultation recordings, ultrasonographic findings and treatment response of 12 adult cattle with chronic suppurative pneumonia: case study.

Auscultation is considered the critical component of the veterinary clinical examination for the diagnosis of bovine respiratory disease but the accuracy with which adventitious sounds reflect underlying lung pathology remains largely unproven. Modern portable ultrasound machines provide the veterinary practitioner with an inexpensive, non-invasive tool with which to examine the pleural surfaces and superficial lung parenchyma. Simultaneous recording of sounds overlying normal lung and defined pathology allows critical assessment of auscultated sounds in the same animal removing confounding fa

Relationship between thoracic auscultation and lung pathology detected by ultrasonography in sheep.

The utility of routine auscultation to detect and characterise the nature of a range of superficial lung and pleural pathologies in domestic sheep was assessed using ultrasonographic examination to indicate and localise pathologies pre-mortem. Necropsy examination was then used to fully characterise the nature and extent of the lesions. Auscultation recordings were made from 10 normal sheep with no clinical evidence of respiratory disease and with absence of significant superficial lung pathology, which was confirmed initially by ultrasound examination and subsequently at necropsy examination.

Comparing RCPs to physicians for the description of lung sounds: are we accurate and can we communicate?

UNLABELLED: Precise communication among clinicians of chest-auscultation findings depends on use of standardized nomenclature for lung sounds. To identify the current practice of clinicans in describing lung sounds, we surveyed physicians and respiratory care practitioners (RCPs). MATERIALS AND METHOD: Surveys were specifically designed to identify: (1) whether RCPs and physicians use similar terms to describe adventitious lung sounds (ALS), (2) whether changes are occurring in response to the recommendations of the ATS-ACCP Ad Hoc Subcommittee on Pulmonary Nomenclature, and (3) whether RCPs

A New Feature with the Potential to Detect the Severity of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea via Snoring Sound Analysis.

The severity of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is diagnosed with polysomnography (PSG), during which patients are monitored by over 20 physiological sensors overnight. These sensors often bother patients and may affect patients' sleep and OSA. This study aimed to investigate a method for analyzing patient snore sounds to detect the severity of OSA. Using a microphone placed at the patient's bedside, the snoring and breathing sounds of 22 participants were recorded while they simultaneously underwent PSG. We examined some features from the snoring and breathing sounds and examined the correlati
