Journal of autism and developmental disorders2007eng
Short break services in a UK county were studied using a postal survey of 256 families with a child with an autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). Results confirmed high degrees of stress and low levels of informal support for all families, but no significant difference in the informal support available to non-users as compared to users of short break services. Robinson & Stalker's (1990) 10-point dependency scale showed a significant difference in dependence and more difficult behaviors between children of users and non-users. However, a large number of non-users had children with high dependence

Clinical patterns, aetiological factors and utilization of services were studied in 40 families who had more than one handicapped child. By retrospective review of the case notes and interviewing consenting parents (90%), data relating to diagnosis, investigations, genetic counselling, social circumstances and help received were obtained. Both children had the same disorder in 31 families, however in only nine of these families did the children have a specific diagnosis. Non-specific mental retardation was the commonest disorder (40 children). Of the 673 special investigations performed, only

Caring for the technology dependent child in the home creates parental stress. Parenting children with device-based respiratory support is particularly stressful as changes in this area can be immediately life threatening. A retrospective pilot study was conducted to describe perceived stressors and coping strategies of the primary caregiver of a child with a tracheostomy and gastrostomy. A convenience sample of 50 families who had a child that received a tracheostomy and gastrostomy in the past two years at our hospital was invited to participate. Three questionnaires were used: the Impact on

BACKGROUND: Fathers' experiences are seldom reflected in paediatric palliative care research, and existing studies predominantly focus on malignant conditions. Less is known about fathers' experiences with healthcare and related support services when caring for a child with a progressive life-limiting condition. These conditions are often marked by long and unpredictable trajectories and complex care needs.
AIM: To gain an in-depth understanding of how fathers experience healthcare and related support services while caring for a child with a progressive life-limiting condition.
DESIGN: A qua

BACKGROUND: Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a neurodegenerative disease with a sudden onset, a rapid progression, a profile of complex disabilities and fatal consequences. Caring for a person with MND is an unremitting commitment, yet little research has examined the experiences and needs of carers for palliative care and bereavement care.
AIM: This study explored the experiences of MND family carers, both during their time as carers and following bereavement. Particular attention was paid to the carers' prolonged grief status and to the implications for service delivery, including palliative

A cross-sectional study, based on an epidemiological register, was carried out to describe the prevalence of disabilities, felt needs and use of services for adults with learning disability and to compare outcomes of reported morbidity, stress and satisfaction among their informal carers. Subjects included 2117 adults and 982 carers known to specialist services in Leicestershire. Behavioural and psychological problems and epilepsy were the main disabilities in adults. The leading unmet needs reported by residential carers were for daycare and other forms of residence, and those reported by inf

BACKGROUND: China's long-term care insurance reform is a key component of multilevel medical security for addressing care needs among older adults with substantial functional decline, and it also raises an ethical governance question: how family-based Confucian care responsibilities are translated into modern rules of eligibility, payment, service provision and regulation.
METHODS: This study analyzed core long-term care insurance policy texts from 48 pilot cities through directed content analysis, a 45-item coding framework, policy text indices, K-means clustering and a supplementary compari

On a single night in 2023, more than 653,000 people experienced homelessness in the United States. In this overview, we highlight structural and individual risk factors that can lead to homelessness, explore evidence on the relationship between homelessness and health, discuss programmatic and policy innovations, and provide policy recommendations. Health system efforts to address homelessness and improve the health of homeless populations have included interventions such as screening for social needs and medical respite programs. Initiatives using the Housing First approach to permanent suppo

In the last decade, the number of children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN) is increased as a result of the improvement of neonatal and pediatric assistance. The aim of our study was to describe the burden of care of the families caring a CYSHCN in our country, evaluating their living condition in order to explore socio-economic characteristics, health problems, needs and their adaptation processes trying to reach a balance between the needs of the disabled child and those of the other family members. We administered a questionnaire to the parents of CYSHCN during a routine cl

Limericks are an easy, casual, and entertaining way to have fun with the English language. Creating them can be an engaging pastime to assist in memorizing important anatomic relationships necessary for being an interventional cardiologist or simply an intellectual exercise that provides respite after a hectic day in the cardiac catheterization laboratory, surgical suite, outpatient clinic, or intensive care unit. Interest in this form of poetry often dates back to when we, as children, were taught the simplistic rhyming pattern of a traditional limerick or learned one during adolescence. As w

INTRODUCTION: Inherited bleeding disorders are rare, for some such as haemophilia, there is a growing body of evidence about caregiver burden and associated support needs. Whilst for other disorders, which may be present with less clinically significant bleeding, there is a paucity of data about parents support needs.
AIMS: To evaluate the supportive care needs of parents of children with a range of inherited bleeding disorders.
METHODS: A single-centre pilot study using the validated Parental Needs Scale for Rare Diseases to measure the overall support needs of parents of children with a bl

The arts have a history of relaxing and calming patients in the hospital setting, yet research is limited on how arts may aid in the healing process. DooR to DooR was established to bring comfort, respite, and healing to hospitalized patients, family members, and health care staff. DooR to DooR is located in the University of North Carolina Hospitals at Chapel Hill, North Carolina; professional performing artists visit there, spending 5 to 10 minutes with each patient, family member, and health care staff. The purpose of this qualitative study is to understand performers' experiences and of ho

The physiologic and anatomic effects of contact lens (CL) wear include both short- and long-term changes in the corneal epithelium stroma, and endothelium. Although these effects can arise in all lens wearers, they are of greatest concern in users of extended wear lenses, owing to their association with an increased incidence of sight-threatening complications. The complications attendant on extended wear may be patient related, lens related, or care related, but they are not inevitable. Patient-related complications can be minimized if clinicians pay close attention to patient selection, lens

This paper discusses a 1989 study of new admissions to 22 adult day care centres in British Columbia and compares it to similar studies in the U.S. The B.C. study investigated clients' characteristics, reasons for referral to the centres, and why some referrals did not attend. Of the new admissions, 63% were female and 30% lived alone. Compared to those in American studies, B.C. clients were older and more likely to live with a spouse. The primary medical conditions of B.C. clients were related to diseases of the circulatory system. As for daily activities, 58% could not bathe without supervis

Children and adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) have needs that challenge our systems of care. A new study estimates ASDs cost more than $126 billion each year in the U.S.--an amount that reflects both the costs of providing educational and medical services as well as the costs of not intervening early and effectively enough to prevent lifelong disability. This Issue Brief summarizes the implications of childhood autism for parental employment and earnings, and analyzes whether community-based services can reduce costly, psychiatric hospitalizations of children with ASDs.

BACKGROUND: Timely recognition and diagnosis of dementia is the pre-condition for improving dementia care, but diagnosis often occurs late in the disease process.
OBJECTIVE: To compare facilitators and obstacles to the timely recognition of dementia across eight European Union states, in order to implement established policies for earlier diagnosis.
METHODS: A modified focus group technique, including a pre and posterior procedure.
RESULTS: Twenty-three participants from different disciplines, purposively sampled for professional expertise in dementia research and innovative practice, atten
