Air contamination due to smoking in German restaurants, bars, and other venues--before and after the implementation of a partial smoking ban.

INTRODUCTION: The present study examined the reduction in exposure to tobacco smoke in German hospitality venues following the implementation of a partial smoking ban by measuring the indoor air concentration of PM(2.5) in 2005 and 2009, that is, before and after the legislation was implemented. METHODS: The concentration of respirable suspended particles (PM(2.5)) in the indoor air of German hospitality venues was measured using a laser photometer (AM510). The prelegislation sample from 2005 included 80 venues of which 58 could be revisited in 2009. After replenishment, the postlegislation s

Alcohol-to-Go Laws During COVID-19: Restaurant Visits, DUI Arrests, and Alcohol-Impaired Traffic Fatalities.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates whether pandemic-era "alcohol-to-go" laws, adopted in most U.S. states to support restaurants and bars, produced measurable effects on economic activity and impaired driving. METHODS: We used a staggered difference-in-differences design to compare outcomes in states that adopted alcohol-to-go laws between 2020 and 2021 to never-adopting states. Policy adoption dates were drawn from the Alcohol Policy Information System. Outcomes were measured using three complementary datasets: (1) SafeGraph Patterns for weekly restaurant and bar visits (2019-2022), (2) the Nat

Widespread Community Transmission of Hepatitis A Virus Following an Outbreak at a Local Restaurant - Virginia, September 2021-September 2022.

Hepatitis A is a vaccine-preventable liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV); it is transmitted through ingestion of food or drink that has been contaminated by small amounts of infected stool, or through direct contact, including sexual contact, with a person who is infected (1). After years of historically low rates of hepatitis A in the United States, the incidence began increasing in 2016, with outbreaks characterized by person-to-person HAV transmission among persons who use drugs, persons experiencing homelessness, and men who have sex with men (2,3). As of September 2022,

Can Aggregated Restaurant Inspection Data Help Us Understand Why Individual Foodborne Illness Outbreaks Occur?

ABSTRACT: Restaurant inspections seek to identify and correct risk factors for foodborne illness, but restaurant inspection data are not typically used more broadly as a food safety surveillance tool. In 2015, there was an outbreak of Salmonella serotype Newport infections associated with multiple restaurants in a chain (chain A), primarily in Minnesota. The outbreak was associated with tomatoes that were likely contaminated at the point of production. The objective of this study was to demonstrate the potential usefulness of aggregated restaurant inspection data in aiding individual outbreak

A Comprehensive Study on Antibiotic Resistance among Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci (CoNS) Strains Isolated from Ready-to-Eat Food Served in Bars and Restaurants.

The present study aimed to characterize and assess the diversity of CoNS strains as potential vectors for the spread of resistance to antimicrobial agents from RTE foods served in bars and restaurants. Eighty-five CoNS strains, obtained from 198 RTE food samples, were investigated. Sixty-seven CoNS isolates (78.8%) were resistant to at least one antibiotic tested, and 37 (43.5%) were multidrug resistant (MDR-CoNS). Moreover, CoNS strains contained genes conferring resistance to antibiotics critically important in medicine, i.e., β-lactams [mecA (29.4%); blaZ (84.7%)], aminoglycosides [aac(6')-

Excessive Smoke from a Neighborhood Restaurant Highlights Gaps in Air Pollution Enforcement: Citizen Science Observational Study.

Regulatory air pollution monitoring is performed using a sparse monitoring network designed to provide background concentrations of pollutants but may miss small area variations due to local emission sources. Low-cost air pollution sensors operated by trained citizen scientists provide an opportunity to fill this gap. We describe the development and implementation of an air pollution monitoring and community engagement plan in response to resident concerns regarding excessive smoke production from a neighborhood restaurant. Particulate matter (PM2.5) was measured using a low-cost, portable sen
