After observing that several families with essential tremor (ET) clinically cosegregated with restless legs syndrome (RLS), we prospectively evaluated for the presence of RLS in 100 patients presenting to the Baylor College of Medicine with ET and prospectively examined all patients presenting with RLS for the presence of tremor during the same time frame. Of 100 consecutive ET patients (60 women and 75 with a family history of ET) seen over 19 weeks (current age, 65.2 +/- 16.3 years; age at tremor onset, 37.8 +/- 19.9 years) 33 met all criteria for RLS, of which 25 had never been diagnosed pr

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common disorder that is estimated to affect 10% of Americans. However, it remains largely undiagnosed and untreated by clinicians. The primary symptoms of this condition are leg discomfort or an urge to move that is temporarily relieved by movement and is worse at rest and at bedtime. RLS impacts the quality of life of the sufferer by disrupting sleep and disturbing or curtailing work and social activities. Approximately 80% of RLS sufferers also have periodic limb movements during sleep, in which repetitive leg movements fragment sleep and may result in dayti

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Patients undergoing dialysis therapy due to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) present a high prevalence of sleep disorders, including restless legs syndrome (RLS). However, the known data generally have been obtained from relatively small patient samples, coming from single or very few dialysis units. Moreover, some data were collected prior to the recent improvements in dialysis techniques, pharmacological therapies and to the establishment of internationally recognised diagnostic criteria for RLS.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In order to study the incidence of the different sl

Restless leg syndrome and PLMD are nocturnal movement disorders associated with significant adverse effects on the health and well-being of patients and their families [66]. Although the pathophysiological basis remains to be fully described, current research points to abnormalities in CNS function and neurotransmitter systems. The accurate diagnosis of RLS and PMD requires a thorough history, physical examination, diagnostic tests, and often, a referral to a sleep disorders specialist. Considering the prevalence of these conditions and their negative impact, nurses should be well-versed in th

BACKGROUND: According to some reports, patients treated with risperidone may develop akathisia. Restless legs syndrome (RLS), which shares some clinical features with akathisia, is a distinct movement and sleep disorder that may be induced by various drugs that act on the CNS.
METHODS: We studied a 31-year-old patient suffering from a schizoaffective disorder including auditory hallucinations who developed symptoms typical of the RLS during treatment with risperidone, using polysomnography to objectify sleep disturbances and associated periodic leg movements during sleep (PLMS).
RESULTS: Aft

Patients with idiopathic and symptomatic restless legs syndrome (RLS) suffer from "dyskinesia while awake" or "daytime myoclonus" when at rest preceded by sensory symptoms. In order to characterise the RLS either as reflex movement or as voluntary movement we measured movement-related cortical potentials in 5 idiopathic and 8 uraemic RLS patients. Movements from both legs were polygraphically recorded concomitantly with cortical activity 2000 msec before to 500 msec after onset of EMG activity. These data were compared with a voluntary simulation of each patient's movement pattern and with 5 a

Two entities of special interest in sleep disorders medicine are restless legs syndrome and periodic movements of sleep. Most patients with restless legs syndrome have periodic movements of sleep, but most patients with the nocturnal disorder do not have restless legs when awake. In both conditions, the underlying cause is obscure, and the frequency of occurrence increases with advancing age. In most patients with restless legs syndrome, the results of complete blood cell counts and iron, ferritin, folate, and vitamin B12 levels are normal. No hematologic or chemical abnormalities have been re

Women are more commonly affected than men by restless legs syndrome, and prevalence is highest amongst those of northern European heritage. The motor manifestations include nonvolitional myoclonus (periodic leg movements). Disinhibition of spinal sensorimotor circuits may underlie these primary features and can be affected by peripheral as well as supraspinal networks. Insufficient mobilizable iron stores increase expressivity in some individuals. The sensorimotor features are relieved by dopamine, especially dopamine agonists, gabapentin and its derivatives, and opioids. A diagnosis relies on

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is frequently reported in peripheral neuropathies, but its prevalence and clinical correlates in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A (CMT1A) and hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies (HNPP) remain poorly defined. We aimed to determine RLS prevalence in CMT1A and HNPP and to assess associations with disease severity, muscle strength, disability, and quality of life (QoL).
METHODS: Forty-seven CMT1A and 18 HNPP patients were included. RLS was diagnosed according to the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group criteria,

IMPORTANCE: Restless legs syndrome is a common neurologic disorder that is more prevalent in women than in men, and it has been suggested that female hormones may be involved in the disorder's pathophysiology.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether women who underwent premenopausal bilateral oophorectomy were at increased risk of restless legs syndrome.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study was performed using data from the Mayo Clinic Cohort Study of Oophorectomy and Aging-2 for a population in Olmsted County, Minnesota. There were 1653 women who underwent premenopausal bilateral oo

Akathisia is an urgent need to move that is associated with treatment with dopamine receptor blocking agents (DRBAs) and with restless legs syndrome (RLS). The pathogenetic mechanism of akathisia has not been resolved. This article proposes that it involves an increased presynaptic dopaminergic transmission in the ventral striatum and concomitant strong activation of postsynaptic dopamine D1 receptors, which form complexes (heteromers) with dopamine D3 and adenosine A1 receptors. It also proposes that in DRBA-induced akathisia, increased dopamine release depends on inactivation of autoreceptor

BACKGROUND: Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a sensorimotor disorder characterized by unpleasant and distressing sensations in the lower limbs that are more pronounced in the evening, commence or worsen at rest, and show partial or complete relief following movement. It can occur as a primary disorder, secondary to medical conditions or treatment with medications including but not limited to antidepressants or antipsychotics.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year old man with major depressive disorder showed partial response to Escitalopram 10 mg daily. Agomelatine 25 mg at night was added to Escitalop

BACKGROUND: Impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease are a potential consequence of dopaminergic therapy. Impulse control problems might be revealed by intertemporal choice tasks which entail to forgo an immediately available reward in favor of a larger but later reward. The steepness of the discounting curve can be quantified by the parameter k.
METHODS: Participants (37 Parkinson patients [13 de novo, 24 medicated], 24 patients with restless legs syndrome, and 22 controls) were offered 54 choices between immediate smaller rewards and delayed larger and the k value was estimated from

OBJECTIVE: Restless legs syndrome (RLS), also known as Willis-Ekbom disease, is a sensorimotor disorder that can result in considerable sleep disruption. This narrative review provides an overview of RLS diagnosis and reports epidemiologic evidence for an association between RLS and mood disorders. Possible links between RLS, sleep disturbances, and mood disorders are considered, and theoretical pathophysiologic pathways are discussed. Finally, pharmacologic therapies for RLS are summarized.
DATA SOURCES: A PubMed search was performed using the search term restless legs syndrome in combinatio

BACKGROUND: No studies have examined the association between RLS and the sequelae of poliomyelitis (PM). We studied the frequency and severity of RLS in a group of consecutive patients with the sequelae of poliomyelitis (PM) and the effect of treatment with dopaminergic drugs.
METHODS: A diagnosis of RLS was made according to the criteria of the International RLS Study Group, and severity was assessed by the RLS rating scale. Information on sex, age, age at onset, site affected by PM, disease duration of PM, and history of post-polio syndrome (pPS) was obtained in a cohort of 52 PM patients.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a multisystem disease with a complex immunologic pathophysiology. Likewise, sleep disorders can involve a complicated interplay between the neurologic pathways, immune system, and respiratory system. Recent studies have shown an elevated prevalence of sleep abnormalities in connective tissue disorders compared to the general population. Restless legs syndrome (RLS) may be present in up to 30% of RA patients. These findings may be related to cytokine release and other immunomodulatory responses. TNF- α levels relate to sleep physiology and anti-TNF- α therapy may im
