Cervical and reticular projections of neurones located in S1 and S2 segments of the cat's spinal cord.

Sacral neurones (S1 and S2 segments) projecting to the cervical cord (C6 segment) and to the contralateral gigantocellular reticular nucleus (coGRN) were electrophysiogically studied on 7 adult cats under alpha-chloralose anaesthesia. Antidromic action potentials were recorded from 48 neurones following stimulation of their axons in both the C6 segment and coGRN. Two groups of investigated cells were distinguished in the gray matter of sacral segments: one distributed in laminae V-VI (12 neurones), the other located in medial part of lamina VII and lamina VIII (36 neurones). All cells from the

Differential action upon sleep states of ventrolateral and central areas of pontine tegmental field.

In order to study oral pontine mechanisms of the sleep- wakefulness cycle (SWC), modifications in the total amount, frequency, and duration of episodes of wakefulness (W), drowsiness (D), slow sleep (SS) and paradoxical sleep (PS) together with modifications in the hourly distribution of both sleep states were analyzed in 15 adult cats. Three animals were used as sham-operated controls. Six of them, Group I, received unilateral lesions in ventral and lateral areas of the nucleus reticularis pontis oralis (RPO) and rostral nucleus reticularis pontis caudalis (RPC). The remaining 6 cats, Group I

[Effects of excluding reticuloseptal input on hippocampal electrical activity in the cat].

The effect of interruption of the reticulo-septal input on the electrical activity of CA1 and CA3 areas of the dorsal hippocampus was studied in cats. Lesion of the medial septal nuclei or the i.v. injection of chlorpromazine in low doses led to depression of the hippocampal theta activity. The reticulo-septal input is responsible for generation and the course of tonic sensory responses of the hippocampal neurons in both areas. The existence of the remaining principal types of sensory responses (phasic, complex) mainly depends upon the cortical input. The reticulo-septal input takes part only

Post-tetanic potentiation, habituation and facilitation of synaptic potentials in reticulospinal neurones of lamprey.

1. Synaptic potentials evoked by electrical stimulation of cranial nerves were recorded in giant reticulospinal neurones (Müller cells) of lamprey. A variety of patterns of stimulation was employed to explore further the functional properties of the pathways intervening between the cranial nerve fibres and Müller cells.2. Simultaneous low intensity stimulation of two different cranial nerves produced excitatory short-latency synaptic potentials whose amplitudes summed linearly.3. Tetanic (10/sec) stimulation of a cranial nerve depressed the evoked short-latency synaptic response, but following

Bulbar myoclonus without palatal myoclonus. A hypothesis on pathophysiology.

A 40-year-old woman with myoclonic contractions bilaterally in the infrahyoid neck muscles, especially in the left cricothyroid muscle, was presented and successfully treated with botulinum toxin injections. The patient had a wide, aberrant vessel curving into the left dorsolateral reticular formation of the medulla oblongata. Based on our observations, we propose that symptomatic bulbar and palatal myoclonus is caused by pathology in the dorsolateral reticular formation, and not by inferior olivary dysfunction as is currently thought.

Exteroceptive and proprioceptive afferents of the trigeminal and facial motor nuclei in the mallard (Anas platyrhynchos L.).

Central pathways converging upon the trigeminofacial motor nuclei of the mallard were studied in order to elucidate neuroanatomically the presumed influence of primary sensory trigeminal afferents upon jaw muscle activity. The techniques used included the Fink-Heimer I method after lesions, and axonal transport labeling following injections of 3H-leucine or of HRP for retrograde identification of the neurons of origin. A general description is given of the trigeminofacial motor complex. Jaw closer muscles are innervated by trigeminal motor neurons, and facial motor neurons innervate the jaw de

Dystonia-like behaviors and impaired sensory-motor integration following neurotoxic lesion of the pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus in mice.

INTRODUCTION: The pedunculopontine nucleus (PPTg) is a vital interface between the basal ganglia and cerebellum, participating in modulation of the locomotion and muscle tone. Pathological changes of the PPTg have been reported in patients and animal models of dystonia, while its effect and mechanism on the phenotyping of dystonia is still unknown. METHODS: In this study, a series of behavioral tests focusing on the specific deficits of dystonia were conducted for mice with bilateral and unilateral PPTg excitotoxic lesion, including the dystonia-like movements evaluation, different types of s

[Functional state of the suprasegmental structures of the brain in experimental secondary contracture of the facial muscles].

For the first time the model of secondary contractures of facial nerves was used to study by long-term sterotaxic implanted electrodes the state of the cortex, amygdal complex, reticular formation of the middle brain, reticular nuclei of the pons and nuclei of the facial nerves. The experiments were accomplished on 31 rabbits. The experiments confirmed a close functional connnection of the VII pair of cranial nerves with the limbico-reticular complex. In secondary contracture there were factors facilitating the influence of pons reticular structures on the deficient system the facial nerve--fa

[Cerebral alcohol dehydrogenase-- a marker of individual ethanol tolerance in ethanol intoxication].

Brain compartments differing by topical chemical location of alcohol dehydrogenases (ADH) were studied on forensic medical material. ADH were found in magnocytes of giant-cell reticular formation, neuronal nuclei in the blue spot, and capillaries, but not in neurons of the ganglionary layer of the cerebral limbic cortex. ADH activity in the studied brain compartments depended on the level of exogenous ethanolemia. Increased ADH activity in the reticular formation magnocytes characterized the individual tolerance in severe ethanol intoxication. Cerebral ADHs are markers of ethanol intoxication.

Descending projections from the superior colliculus in rat: a study using orthograde transport of wheatgerm-agglutinin conjugated horseradish peroxidase.

Despite extensive behavioural work on the rat superior colliculus, its descending efferent pathways have not been fully characterised with modern anatomical tract-tracing techniques. To investigate these pathways, wheatgerm-agglutinin conjugated with horseradish peroxidase (1%) was injected at various locations within the superior colliculus of hooded rats. Label judged to be transported orthogradely was plotted on coronal sections modified from the atlas of Paxinos and Watson (1982). Two major descending pathways were identified. Brainstem afferents to the rostral (juxtafacial) nucleus paragigantocellularis: integration of exteroceptive and interoceptive sensory inputs in the ventral tegmentum.

The rostral pole of the nucleus paragigantocellularis (PGi), termed juxtafacial PGi, lies medially adjacent to the facial nucleus and lateral to the pyramidal tract and the nucleus gigantocellularis pars alpha in the caudal ventral pons. This narrow region of the ventral pontine reticular formation is an afferent to the nucleus locus coeruleus, and contains neurons which have been implicated in pain processing, cardiovascular regulation, respiratory control and arousal. Here, we studied brainstem afferents to the juxtafacial PGi using retrograde transport of wheat germ agglutinin-conjugated ho

Evaluation of synthetic reticular hybrid meshes designed for intraperitoneal abdominal wall repair: Preclinical and in vitro behavior.

INTRODUCTION: Reticular hybrid meshes represent an alternative material for intraperitoneal repair of abdominal hernias. These consist of a reticular mesh coated or interwoven/knitted with inert materials. This study assesses the performance of two reticular polypropylene-containing hybrid meshes, TiMESH (coated with titanium) and DynaMesh (interwoven with polyvinylidene fluoride), in vitro, as well as their efficiency in adhesion prevention and tissue incorporation in an intraperitoneal model. METHODS: The mesothelialization capacity of TiMESH and DynaMesh was evaluated in vitro and compared

Dynamic Interaction between Cortico-Brainstem Pathways during Training-Induced Recovery in Stroke Model Rats.

Reorganization of residual descending motor circuits underlies poststroke recovery. We previously clarified a causal relationship between the cortico-rubral tract and intensive limb use-induced functional recovery after internal capsule hemorrhage (ICH). However, other descending tracts, such as the cortico-reticular tract, might also be involved in rehabilitation-induced compensation. To investigate whether rehabilitation-induced recovery after ICH involves a shift in the compensatory circuit from the cortico-rubral tract to the cortico-reticular tract, we established loss of function of the

The Serotonin Brainstem Hypothesis for the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

The sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the leading cause of postneonatal infant mortality in the United States today, with an overall rate of 0.39/1000 live births. It is defined as the sudden and unexpected death of an infant <12 months of age that remains unexplained after a complete autopsy, death scene investigation, and review of the clinical history. The serotonin brainstem hypothesis has been a leading hypothesis for SIDS over the last 2 decades. Our laboratory has studied this hypothesis over time with a variety of tissue techniques, including tissue receptor autoradiography, high

Disorders of the reticular activating system.

The organization of components of the reticular activating system and their role in sleep-wake mechanisms and arousal are described. A functional model is proposed based on known neuroanatomical and neurophysiological findings. The involvement of these elements of the reticular activating system in various neurological and psychiatric disorders is discussed. A series of hypotheses are advanced to account for the role of these nuclei in such diverse disorders as schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder, REM behavior disorder, Parkinson's disease and narcolepsy. This line of reasoning sugge

The role of substance P in the central mechanisms of escape reaction elicited by electrical stimulation of the ventromedial hypothalamus was investigated in chronic experiments on rabbits. Intravenous injection of substance P (30 micrograms/kg) led to a short-term (less than 10 min) increase in the threshold of stimulation of the ventromedial hypothalamus and to more stable (up to 1.5 h) disorders of the hippocampal-hypothalamic relations. After substance P injection the inhibitory effects of the dorsal hippocampus but not the facilitating influences of the midbrain reticular formation on exci

On the distribution of acetylcholinesterase in the medulla oblongata of hedgehog (Paraechinus micropus).

The paper deals with the distribution of acetylcholinesterase (CHO-A) in the various nuclei, tracts and fibrous bundles of the medulla oblongata of hedgehog. The main highlights of the study are: 1. The cranial nerve nuclei such as nucleus n. hypoglossi, nucleus dorsalis n. vagi, nucleus tractus spinalis n. trigemini, nucleus n. facialis, nucleus abducentis and nucleus ambiguus demonstrate strong activity of the enzyme irrespective of their motor or sensory nature. 2. The nucleus vestibularis medialis, nucleus vestibularis lateralis and nucleus cochlearis dorsalis exhibit activity of high orde

Central nervous control of venous tone. III. Responses of capacitance and resistance vessels of skin to bulbar and hypothalamic stimulation.

Electrical stimulation of 350 points in the bulbar formation of 35 dogs under chloralose anaesthesia demonstrated the presence of sites producing increase or decrease of systemic arterial pressure (SAP) in the same general morphological limits of bulbar pressor and depressor regions as described by earlier authors. Simultaneous recording of pressure changes in the cutaneous vessels however demonstrated that pressure changes in these vessels did not correspond to the pressor or depressor effects of the SAP. Instead, responses were obtained in which pressures in cutaneous capacitance and resista
