Sarcopenia in Patients With Spinal Metastasis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Retrospective Cohort Studies.

BackgroundAs a metastasis cancer that happens up to 70% of the cancer patients, spinal metastasis is drawing attention for its significant impairment to health. There exist several predictive models designed to estimate mortality in spinal metastasis patients but they are reported with limited accuracy. In recent years, some retrospective cohort studies have been carried out to associate sarcopenia with mortality in spinal metastasis.IntroductionAs a risk factor leading to adverse events in many diseases, sarcopenia was considered to significantly impact on patients with spinal metastasis in m

Recognition of moyamoya disease and its hemorrhagic risk using deep learning algorithms: sourced from retrospective studies.

Although intracranial hemorrhage in moyamoya disease can occur repeatedly, predicting the disease is difficult. Deep learning algorithms developed in recent years provide a new angle for identifying hidden risk factors, evaluating the weight of different factors, and quantitatively evaluating the risk of intracranial hemorrhage in moyamoya disease. To investigate whether convolutional neural network algorithms can be used to recognize moyamoya disease and predict hemorrhagic episodes, we retrospectively selected 460 adult unilateral hemispheres with moyamoya vasculopathy as positive samples fo

Retrospective occupational exposure assessment for case-control and case-series epidemiology studies based in Shanghai China.

To provide exposure information for epidemiology studies conducted in Shanghai from 2001 to 2008, we completed retrospective exposure assessments (EA) of benzene and other hazards. Interviewers administered questionnaires to subjects from Shanghai area hospitals. An initial exposure screening by EA staff members, blinded as to case-control status, stratified jobs into exposed, unexposed, or uncertain categories prior to review by a separate expert panel (EP). Resources for the EA included job/industry-specific questionnaire responses by subjects, short-term benzene area concentration measureme

[Retrospective studies on the relation between fibrocystic disease and cancer of the breast with therapeutic conclusions].

On the basis of 597 cases of benign and malignant tumoral, respectively dysplastic diseases of the breast, operated at the IInd Surgical Clinic of Tirgu-Mureş during the period 1977-1983, the authors consider the fibrocystic disease (FCD) of the II and III degree as a facultative precancerous lesion. The extremely high frequency of FCD associated to the mammary cancer in young women, as well as of intense epithelial proliferations and intermediate forms, of transition from typical epithelial hyperplasias to the atypical forms observed in some of these cases, is pointed out. The 4 cases (1.94%)

A retrospective study of neuroschistosomiasis in aquatic birds.

Schistosomatidae is a family of trematodes that generally have an indirect life cycle, with snails as intermediate hosts in avian schistosomiasis and aquatic birds as definitive hosts. Although multiple studies report avian schistosomes, there are only a few reports describing gross and histological lesions of neuroschistosomiasis in aquatic birds. Herein, a retrospective study including 12 aquatic birds with neuroschistosomiasis was conducted to further characterize the clinical, gross, and histologic findings and to identify the trematodes. The median age of birds was 12 years, and schistoso

The Epidemiology of Snakebite in Bhutan: A Retrospective Study.

Bhutan is a tropical country where snakebite is supposedly common, but official data are scanty and unmethodical. Deaths from snakebites were reported from areas where snakebites are common. Four-year (2018-2021) data of snakebite from 45 Bhutanese hospitals were collected and analysed to describe the burden and map by districts. A total of 371 snakebites were recorded from 45 hospitals during the 4 years. Most cases were seen in the southern and central parts of the country. There was a definite rise in the number of cases in the warmer months, starting from March and peaking between June and

Treatment of fracture in haemophilia: a retrospective study.

PURPOSE: Fractures in persons with haemophilia (PWH) exhibit similarities and distinctions compared to typical fractures. However, complications confer an added increase in the risk of fractures. This study aimed to summarize the treatment experience of fractures in PWH based on a classification. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on PWH between 2001 and 2023. The classification was developed into three types according to PWH's clinical presentations and imaging findings. Subsequently, the distribution and distinctions among subtypes were analyzed, followed by an exploration

Hyperkinetic Gallbladder Syndrome: A Retrospective Study.

Gallbladder dysmotility issues present a significant challenge for clinicians and general surgeons. Adding a hepato-biliary scan to the diagnostic toolkit has greatly helped in understanding this condition, but how to proceed when dealing with hypermotility remains a real challenge, as predicting the outcome of a cholecystectomy, due to limited research, is difficult. Patients typically come to the office after an extended workup, with ultrasound and CT scans showing no abnormalities, normal liver chemistries, and an abnormal ejection fraction. At this point, the surgeon must clarify the plan

Melioidosis in Mali: a retrospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Melioidosis is a neglected tropical bacterial infection with a high mortality rate caused by the Gram-negative soil bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei. Although the disease is increasingly recognised in Asian and Pacific regions, the situation in Africa is characterised by a scarcity of data and great uncertainty regarding the disease burden and distribution. Here, we aimed to report cases of melioidosis in children younger than 5 years in Mali, where no confirmed melioidosis had been reported previously. METHODS: Médecins Sans Frontières maintains a paediatrics programme in Kout

Neutrophilic eccrine hidradenitis: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Neutrophilic eccrine hidradenitis (NEH) is a benign neutrophilic dermatosis not well recognized beyond an association with malignancy. Although the disease is commonly reported in adults with malignancy, this association is uncommon in children. The diagnosis of NEH is predominantly based on histologic findings to exclude alternative diagnoses for adults, but biopsy is not usually required for children. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed of adult and pediatric patients diagnosed with NEH at three Mayo Clinic sites from January 1, 1992, to January 1, 2022. The aim of this
