Fear avoidance and return to work after mild traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVES: Fear avoidance is associated with symptom persistence after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). In this study, we investigated whether fear avoidance was associated with other outcomes such as return to work-related activity (RTW). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed associations between fear avoidance and RTW 6-9 months after mTBI, in two merged prospective mTBI cohorts. Adult participants aged 16 or over (n=175), presenting to outpatient services in New Zealand within 3 months of their injury, who were engaged in work-related activity at the time of injury, were included. Return to work in patients with lumbar disc herniation undergoing fusion.

BACKGROUND: Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is a common problem. When surgical treatment is required, the intervention is typically decompression without fusion. Successful return-to-work (RTW) is a standard expectation with these limited procedures. Occasionally, the size or location of the disc herniation suggests the need for fusion, but the inability to RTW is a significant concern in these cases. The purpose of this study is to determine if the addition of lumbar fusion, as compared to decompression alone, will substantially diminish RTW in patients with lumbar disc herniation. METHODS: Thi

Characterizing Early and Late Return to Work after Traumatic Brain Injury.

Facilitating successful return to work (RTW) is a key rehabilitation objective following traumatic brain injury (TBI). This study modelled early (within 6 months) and late (7-34 months) RTW by leveraging a large and comprehensive compensation database. The sample comprised 666 participants with TBI, the majority of whom sustained a moderate or severe injury caused by a motor vehicle accident. Early RTW was more likely for individuals who were pre-morbidly employed in a managerial or professional occupation (odds ratio [OR] = 2.1, confidence interval [CI] = 1.29-3.37), and those who experienced

Predictors of return to work following motor vehicle related orthopaedic trauma.

BACKGROUND: Work disability following motor vehicle related orthopaedic trauma is a significant contributor to the burden of injury and disease. Early identification of predictors for return to work (RTW) is essential for developing effective interventions to prevent work disability. The study aim was to determine the predictors (including compensation related factors) of time to RTW following motor vehicle related orthopaedic trauma. METHODS: Admitted patients were recruited prospectively from two trauma hospitals with upper and/or lower extremity fractures following a motor vehicle crash. B

Maternal depression, pregnancy intention, and return to paid work after childbirth.

BACKGROUND: Maternal depression is an important public health issue for women, their families, and their employers. Previous studies have examined the impact of leave duration on maternal depression, but none have studied the association between maternal depression and the pace of return to paid work. We examine herein the relationship between maternal depression and return to work, and the moderating effects of pregnancy intention. METHODS: We utilized data from the Listening to Mothers II Survey collected from January 20 through February 21, 2006. The woman had to be 18 to 45 years old, spe

The narratives of 12 men with AIDS: exploring return to work.

Analyses of life stories has increasingly been used to understand how different individuals interpret and respond to an experience such as the onset of disability. This paper presents findings of a prospective qualitative study of 12 men living with AIDS who attempted to return to paid employment. Narrative analysis of four interviews over 12 months was used to explore the relationship between return-to-work efforts and whether participants' narratives progressed, remained stable, or regressed. Findings suggest that the men who demonstrated progressive narratives recreated an identity includin

Financial burden associated with time to return to work after living kidney donation.

Many living kidney donors undertake a significant financial burden in order to donate. We studied the association between time to return to work and reported financial burden. Kidney donors who donated from 2/2005 through 12/2015 (n = 1012) were surveyed 6 months after donation and asked about occupation, time to return to work, and financial burden (on a 10-point Likert scale). Of 856 donors working for pay, 629 (73%) responded. After adjusting for donor characteristics, increased length of time to return to work was a significant predictor of financial burden (P < .001). It is notable that t

[After cancer: after-eff ects, return to work and the right to forget].

AFTER-EFFECTS. RETURN TO WORK AND THE RIGHT TO FORGET. The ten-year strategy 2021-2030 against cancers makes staying at work or returning to work after cancer a major priority. A growing number of patients are on the job market at the time of their cancer diagnosis, with a potentially long career future. The after-effects of the disease, and the gap between them and the professional world, present them with numerous difficulties. French national cancer institute (INCa) has launched several initiatives to help people stay in work and return to work, in particular to complement the measures deve
