Steinernema carpocapsae is an entomopathogenic nematode (EPN) that rapidly infects and kills a wide range of insect hosts and has been linked to host immunosuppression during the initial stages of infection. The lethal nature of S. carpocapsae infections has previously been credited to its symbiotic bacteria; however, it has become evident that the nematodes are able to effectively kill their hosts independently through their excretion/secretion products (ESPs). Here we examined how the adult Drosophila melanogaster immune system is modulated in response to S. carpocapsae ESPs in an attempt to

BACKGROUND: Pelodera (Rhabditis) strongyloides is a small saprophytic nematode that lives in decaying organic matter. On rare occasions, it can invade the mammalian skin, causing a pruritic, erythematous, alopecic and crusting dermatitis on skin sites that come into contact with the ground. Diagnosis of the disease is based on case history (a dog living outdoors on damp straw bedding) with characteristic skin lesions and on the demonstration of typical larvae in skin scrapings or biopsy. Pelodera (rhabditic) dermatitis cases have been reported mainly from Central European countries and the Uni

Rhabdias kuzmini n. sp., a parasite of the lungs of Bufo occidentalis, is described and illustrated. This Mexican taxon differs from the related species in the genus by the possession of 4 lips (2 subdorsal and 2 subventral) and 2 lateral pseudolabia, corpus not inflated, a larger barrel-shaped buccal capsule, equatorial vulva, and the presence of a slightly swollen cuticle in the anterior and posterior ends of the body. This is the 16th species described in the Neotropical Realm and the first species of Rhabdias described from endemic anurans in México.

A 73-year-old Thai woman living in Mueang District, Saraburi Province, central Thailand presented with numerous hookworm-like nematodes, finally revealed as Diploscapter coronata, by fecal culture. The patient exhibited no significant clinical signs of the gastrointestinal or genitourinary systems, and was generally not ill as a result of this unusual infection. Less commonly, patients have presented with symptoms and signs of Diploscapter coronata infection. However, potentially serious consequences can occur where people have exposure to an environment that has been contaminated with infecte

INTRODUCTION: The critically endangered Manis pentadactyla and Manis javanica are increasingly threatened by parasitic infections, with gastrointestinal nematodes and protozoan parasites particularly prominent.
METHODS: In this study, 72 fecal samples were collected from captive M. javanica and M. pentadactyla housed at the Guangdong Wildlife Monitoring and Rescue Center in China. High-throughput amplicon sequencing targeting the V9 region of the 18S rRNA gene was employed to investigate the community composition and diversity of their gastrointestinal parasite communities.
RESULTS: Our resu

Changes in organ morphology have been essential to the evolution of novel body forms and in permitting organisms to invade new ecological niches. Changes in the arrangement of cells and tissues and in the regulation of morphological movements are fundamental to evolutionary transitions of organ shape and function. However, little is known about the genetic and developmental control of these changes. We use interspecific differences in the migration and extension of the nematode hermaphrodite gonadal arms to study the generation of morphological novelty. We show that the extending Pristionchus

The lung nematodes of the genus Rhabdias parasitic in chameleons were previously only known from east Africa and Madagascar. Two new species are described from Cameroon: i) Rhabdias okuensis n. sp., type-host Chamaeleo (Trioceros) quadricomis gracilior, from Mont Oku, is frequent; it resembles R. jarki from Burundi, with a short buccal capsule and a long, thin oesophagus, and is distinguished by its large cervical vesicle and cephalic characters (mouth aperture, papillae). The female parasites are hermaphroditic (spermatozoa identified) and they pierce the lung wall and induce lesions, as R. j

By imposing novel selection pressures on both participants, biological invasions can modify evolutionary 'arms races' between hosts and parasites. A spatially replicated cross-infection experiment reveals strong spatial divergence in the ability of lungworms (Rhabdias pseudosphaerocephala) to infect invasive cane toads (Rhinella marina) in Australia. In areas colonized for longer than 20 years, toads are more resistant to infection by local strains of parasites than by allopatric strains. The situation reverses at the invasion front, where super-infective parasites have evolved. Invasion-induc

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) associated with their symbiotic bacteria can effectively kill insect pests, in agriculture, forestry and floriculture. Industrial-scale production techniques for EPNs have been established, including solid and liquid monoculture systems. It is found that supplement of 0.01% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) to the culture medium significantly enhances the recovery and infective juvenile yield of these nematodes. However, the specific nematode genes responding to DMSO is not yet clear. This study identified differentially expressed genes and associated enriched pathway

The plant parasitic nematode, Aphelenchoides besseyi, is a serious pest causing severe damage to various crop plants and vegetables. The Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) strains, GBAC46 and NMTD81, and the biological strain, FZB42, showed higher nematicidal activity against A. besseyi, by up to 88.80, 82.65, and 75.87%, respectively, in a 96-well plate experiment. We screened the whole genomes of the selected strains by protein-nucleic acid alignment. It was found that the Bt strain GBAC46 showed three novel crystal proteins, namely, Cry31Aa, Cry73Aa, and Cry40ORF, which likely provide for the safe

The pecan weevil, Curculio caryae (Horn) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is a key pest of pecans Carya illinoinensis ([Wangenh.] K. Koch) (Fagales: Juglandaceae). Control recommendations rely on broad spectrum chemical insecticides. Due to regulatory and environmental concerns, effective alternatives for C. caryae control must be sought for pecan production in conventional and organic systems. We explored the use of microbial biopesticides for control of C. caryae in Georgia pecan orchards. Three experiments were conducted. The first investigated an integrated microbial control approach in an org

Plant defense pathways play a critical role in mediating tritrophic interactions between plants, herbivores, and natural enemies. While the impact of plant defense pathway stimulation on natural enemies has been extensively explored aboveground, belowground ramifications of plant defense pathway stimulation are equally important in regulating subterranean pests and still require more attention. Here we investigate the effect of aboveground stimulation of the salicylic acid pathway through foliar application of the elicitor methyl salicylate on belowground recruitment of the entomopathogenic ne

Steinernema feltiae is the most effective nematode for controlling sciarid species but S. carpocapsae does exert some control. S. feltiae is less effective at 30 degrees C than at 22 degrees C. S. anomali, S. riobravis and two Heterorhabditis spp. gave better control at the higher temperature. All six sciarid species tested were susceptible to S. feltiae but there was some variation in the level of infection. UK isolates of S. feltiae were more effective against UK sciarids than the nematode isolates from other European countries which were tested. Adult sciarids are infected by S. feltiae and

The use of Steinernema carpocapsae infective juveniles as biological control agents is a long-standing practice, yet the oral impact of their secreted venom proteins on crop pests remains largely unknown. We evaluated the oral toxicity of S. carpocapsae venom proteins against Spodoptera frugiperda using artificial diet assays. Ingestion caused significant dose-dependent toxicity in early-instar larvae, resulting in mortality and a prolonged developmental duration. Carry-over effects were profound; treated pupae were smaller and malformed, with only 19% of larvae fed on 1000 ng g-1 venom protei

The excessive use of acaricides in the management of the tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus has favored the development of resistance in the parasites, in addition to causing environmental contamination. In this context, biological control using entomopathogenic nematodes appears as a promising alternative. This study evaluated the efficacy of two isolates, Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (HB EN01) and Steinernema rarum (PAM 25), in the in vitro control of R. (B.) microplus. Two experiments were conducted with different concentrations of nematodes. In the first, fifteen engorged females we

The α2δ subunit is a high-voltage activated (HVA) calcium channel (Cav1 and Cav2) auxiliary subunit that increases the density and function of HVA calcium channels in the plasma membrane of mammals. However, its function in plant parasitic nematodes remains unknown. In this study, we cloned the full-length cDNA sequence of the voltage-gated calcium channel (VGCC) α2δ subunit (named DdCavα2δ) in Ditylenchus destructor. We found that DdCavα2δ tends to be expressed in the egg stage, followed by the J3 stage. RNA-DIG in situ hybridization experiments showed that the DdCavα2δ subunit was expressed

Ohno proposed that, during the origin of X/Y sex chromosomes from a pair of autosomes, X-linked genes must double their per-allele expressions to compensate for the degeneration of their Y homologs. Whether Ohno's hypothesis holds in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans remains unresolved despite that C. elegans is a model for studying between-sex X chromosome dosage compensation. Genome sequencing revealed independent fusions of an ancestrally autosomal linkage group to the X chromosome in C. elegans and Brugia malayi, two species belonging to different suborders of the order Rhabditida, allow

Nematodes are one of the most abundant and ecologically significant organisms, yet they are affected by environmental fluctuations; however, their intergeneric interactions under environmental stressors remain underexplored. This study explores the impact of pH and temperature differences on the growth, reproduction, and proteomic responses of four rhabditid nematode species of four genera (Bursilla monhystera, Diploscapter coronatus, Mesorhabditis spiculigera, and Protorhabditis parvus). Using controlled culture conditions, we examined intergeneric competition under low pH (4) and high temper

Amerotyphlops brongersmianus (Vanzolini, 1976) is the only representative of its family in Argentina, and to date, there have been no records of its parasites. Between 2013 and 2018, 46 specimens of A. brongersmianus were collected in Corrientes province and investigated for helminths. Eighty-three specimens of Serpentirhabdias aff. vellardi were collected from the lungs of nineteen hosts. Sixty-nine percent of the nematodes were collected from the vascular lung mostly, with a prevalence of 41.3% and a mean intensity of 3.74 worms. Adult snakes had higher prevalence and mean abundance than juv
