Approximately 50 per cent of all rhabdomyosarcomas in children occur in the head and neck region with the orbit, nasopharynx and ear in order of descending frequency. Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma is the commonest malignant tumour of the aural region in childhood and its clinical course is usually rapidly fatal, with extensive local disease and or distant metastases (Dehner and Chen, 1978). Other malignant tumours that can occur in children include melanoma and other mesenchymal tumours, including undifferentiated sarcoma, fibrosarcoma, osteogenic sarcomas and Ewing sarcoma. Malignant lesions of the bladder in infancy and early childhood arise from mesenchymal tissue. Among the mesenchymal tumors embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma is more common in young children than in adults. The gross appearance of rhabdomyosarcoma of the bladder is typically that of polypoid grapelike clusters of tissue, termed "sarcoma botryoides". Histologically, the lesion is consistent with embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. The growths originate in the submucosal layer of the trigone and the internal urethral orifice. Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) of the bladder in children tends to remain within the disease.

Primary prostate rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare, aggressive malignancy predominantly affecting children and adolescents. We report a 14-year-old male presenting with progressive gross hematuria and lower abdominal pain. Imaging revealed a large heterogeneous prostatic mass extending to the bladder base with pelvic lymphadenopathy. Prostate biopsy demonstrated spindle-shaped tumor cells in a myxoid background, consistent with rhabdomyosarcoma. The patient received chemotherapy and supportive management, with initial improvement of hematuria. However, the disease progressed rapidly, accompanied by c

This report describes a 2-day-old male infant who presented with a perianal swelling since birth. The swelling was painless, exhibited a soft to firm consistency, and progressively increased in size over a period of 2 months. The perianal region is an uncommon location for rhabdomyosarcoma, accounting for approximately 2% of all tumours. Diagnostic workup included MRI of the abdomen, which revealed a 4.7 × 2.7 × 2.5 cm heterogeneous soft tissue mass in the perineum extending into the pelvis. Histopathological examination demonstrated lesional spindle and round cells with striations in the spin

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcomas (ERMS) account for 2-3% of cancers in pediatric and adolescent populations. They are rarer in adults. We and others have reported that ERMS arising in the uterine cervix may harbor mutations in the gene encoding the microRNA biogenesis enzyme, DICER1, but a large series of cases has not been published. In the uterus, distinguishing ERMS from adenosarcoma can be very challenging, even for expert pathologists, and DICER1 alterations have been identified in a variable subset of uterine adenosarcomas. We hypothesized that DICER1 genetic testing may be useful in distingu

Rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare tumor, with an annual incidence of 4.3 cases per million children. Even thought, it is the most common soft tissue sarcoma in childhood, with a mean age of 6 to 8 years at diagnosis. A 4 year-old boy presented with a history of a fast growing (1-month) nodular lesion in the caruncle of his left eye. Slit lamp examination showed a vascularized solid nodular lesion in the semilunar fold. The lesion was surgically removed obtaining infiltrated edges with tumoral cells. A second surgery was performed with free tumour edges. The diagnosis of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, bo

AIMS: To assess the impact of treatment for embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma on spinal growth and limb length and examine the response of these parameters to growth hormone (GH) treatment.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective case note review of 17 survivors of head and neck rhabdomyosarcoma followed up at a single institution. All children had been treated with chemotherapy and local radiotherapy. Growth velocity, height, sitting height, and subischial limb length SDS scores were analysed.
RESULTS: Growth failure secondary to isolated GH deficiency (GHD) developed in 7/17 patients. GHD occurred

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS) of the prostate is an extremely rare malignant tumor, which often presents with urinary symptoms. We report a 32-year-old male with recurrent urinary retention diagnosed with prostatic ERMS via surgical pathology. This case analyzes the reasons for initial misdiagnosis and details multimodal imaging features on ultrasound (US), contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS), CT, and MRI. Notably, this report provides the first description of the CEUS enhancement pattern in prostatic ERMS, which may represent a unique imaging characteristic.

AIM AND BACKGROUND: Malignant tumors are rarely seen in children, of which lymphomas and sarcomas like rhabdomyosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma prevail. Histopathologically, these lesions show numerous round cells, which make it difficult to differentiate between one another. Molecular analysis such as immunohistochemistry has proved to be beneficial and cost-effective. The current report aims to highlight an enigmatic case of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS), emphasizing the role of immunohistochemistry.

A 10-month-old girl presented with a 4-month history of a rapidly growing lesion on the lower lip. Initial assessment and Doppler ultrasound supported a diagnosis of pyogenic granuloma. However, emergent biopsy revealed an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, a highly malignant tumor commonly associated with cancer-susceptible syndromes including neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). Despite having no apparent clinical features of NF1 at initial presentation, she was later found to have multiple café-au-lait spots and a subsequent diagnosis of NF1 was made.

BACKGROUND: The DICER1 mutation is a pathogenic, germline mutation that predisposes patients to uncommon malignancies at a young age.
CASE: A 6-month-old female infant presented with vaginal bleeding and a protruding vaginal mass of unclear pathogenesis. Chemotherapy was initially targeted toward a germ cell tumor; after pathologic testing and auto-amputation of the tumor, the patient was diagnosed with a rare DICER1-associated embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. Subsequently, her treatment course was restructured and family genetic surveillance instituted.
SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION: Consideration for

The ERBB2 gene encodes a receptor tyrosine kinase also known as HER2. The gene is amplified and overexpressed in one-fifth of breast carcinomas; patients with such tumors benefit from targeted treatment with trastuzumab or other drugs blocking the receptor. In addition, ERBB2 has been shown to be amplified and/or overexpressed in a variety of other malignancies. Notably, both alveolar and embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), especially in children, often show increased expression of ERBB2. Although high-level amplification of the gene has not been described in RMS, its frequent expression at the

BACKGROUND: Congenital midline nasal masses are rare anomalies and are typically benign nasal dermoid sinus cysts (NDSCs). Rhabdomyosarcomas (RMSs) are even less common, and only a fraction affect sites like the external nose, nasal cavity, nasopharynx, and paranasal sinuses. We review the clinical presentation and treatment of nasal, nasopharyngeal, and paranasal RMSs and report the first documented midline presentation.
METHODS: We queried PubMed for articles with titles containing the terms rhabdomyosarcoma or sarcoma botryoides and nose, nasal, paranasal, sinonasal, nasopharynx, or nasoph

BACKGROUND: Rhabdomyosarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal neoplasm rarely diagnosed in the larynx. Traditionally, it has been treated by radical surgery (i.e. total laryngectomy), followed by radiation and/or chemotherapy. Recent advances suggest that it may be treated with combination therapy comprising high-dose radiation and pulse chemotherapy, with a high success rate.
CASE REPORT: We report the first documented case of subglottic embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma in an adolescent female treated with chemoradiation alone, and review the literature reflecting a move towards organ preservation.

Rhabdomyosarcoma presents special diagnostic problems when it involves the uterine cervix in young children because tumor cells may lack marked atypia and may blend with the normal, immature, condensed, cellular stroma, rendering diagnosis difficult. Myogenic makers are a valuable ancillary technique for establishing a diagnosis of rhabdomyosarcoma. However, desmin positivity has been reported in cervical stromal cells, which can confound diagnosis. To determine whether immunohistochemical markers of skeletal muscle differentiation are helpful in the diagnosis of uterine botryoid rhabdomyosarc

A 9-year-old boy was seen to have embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of his right hand. He was treated with surgery, radiotherapy and adjuvant combination chemotherapy and remained free of disease for 103 months. He then developed signs of upper respiratory tract obstruction and a mass in the superior mediastinum was found. Histopathological and immunohistochemical studies confirmed metastatic embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. This very unusual, long, relapse-free interval is discussed.

BACKGROUND: Rhabdomyosarcoma is classified into histologic subtypes: embryonal, alveolar, pleomorphic, spindle, and mixed-type. Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma is mainly a disease of children. It occurs rarely in adults. When rhabdomyosarcoma is found in adults, it usually exhibits worse outcomes than in pediatric patients.
