Rhizosphere priming of soil organic matter in response to multiple global change factors.

The rhizosphere priming effect (RPE), referring to the effects of living plant roots on soil organic matter decomposition, plays an important role in terrestrial carbon and nutrient cycling. However, how global changes may affect RPE remains unclear. By conducting a global meta-analysis of 220 observations from 39 plant species planted in 49 mineral and organic soils, we quantified the effects of multiple global change factors on RPE and explored the regulations of plant, edaphic, and experimental factors on RPE responses. We found that, overall, nitrogen addition, phosphorus addition, elevate

[Mechanisms of Rhizosphere Microorganisms in Regulating Plant Root System Architecture in Acidic Soils].

Red soil occupies an important position in China's agriculturally cultivated land resources. However, its low pH value, high aluminum concentration, and inefficient phosphorus utilization limit the productivity of acidic red soil farmland. Plant roots exhibit remarkable plasticity, capable of absorbing water and nutrients and modulating root system architecture in response to biotic and abiotic stresses, either autonomously or through rhizosphere microorganisms. This study primarily investigates the regulatory effects of rhizosphere microorganisms, including plant growth-promoting rhizobacteri

Root-associated Streptomyces produce galbonolides to modulate plant immunity and promote rhizosphere colonization.

The rhizosphere, which serves as the primary interface between plant roots and the soil, constitutes an ecological niche for a huge diversity of microbial communities. Currently, there is little knowledge on the nature and the function of the different metabolites released by rhizospheric microbes to facilitate colonization of this highly competitive environment. Here, we demonstrate how the production of galbonolides, a group of polyene macrolides that inhibit plant and fungal inositol phosphorylceramide synthase (IPCS), empowers the rhizospheric Streptomyces strain AgN23, to thrive in the rh

Plants may alter competition by modifying nutrient bioavailability in rhizosphere: a modeling approach.

Plants modify nutrient availability by releasing chemicals in the rhizosphere. This change in availability induced by roots (bioavailability) is known to improve nutrient uptake by individual plants releasing such compounds. Can this bioavailability alter plant competition for nutrients and under what conditions? To address these questions, we have developed a model of nutrient competition between plant species based on mechanistic descriptions of nutrient diffusion, plant exudation, and plant uptake. The model was parameterized using data of the effects of root citrate exudation on phosphorus

Strain-Specific DSE Effects on Yam Rhizosphere Carbon Metabolism Are Modulated by Soil Factors.

Rhizosphere microbes are vital for plant growth. Dark septate endophytes (DSE) can enhance host plant adaptability and regulate microbial communities, showing promise for yam soil remediation. This study examined how single and mixed inoculations of eight DSE strains affect yam rhizosphere carbon metabolism. Results showed that rhizosphere microbes preferred carbohydrate and amino acid carbon sources. Single inoculations exhibited relatively high overall metabolic activity, whereas mixed inoculations demonstrated distinct advantages in the utilization of specific carbon sources, such as carboh

Amplicon and metagenomic sequencing reveal thifluzamide drive rhizosphere microbial structural shifts and functional adaption.

Thifluzamide (TF) is a widely used phenyl urea fungicide in rice production; however, its impacts on the structural composition and functional dynamics of the rhizosphere microbiome remain poorly understood. Here, we systematically investigated the effects of TF on the structure, interactions, and functional potential of the rice (Oryza sativa L.) rhizosphere microbiome using integrated amplicon sequencing and metagenomic approaches. TF application significantly altered both bacterial and fungal community composition, bacterial diversity was markedly reduced, whereas fungal diversity increased

Orchard management alters citrus root and rhizosphere microbiomes with functional consequences for plant performance.

Agricultural management practices act as ecological disturbances that can restructure soil and plant-associated microbial communities, but the functional consequences of these microbial shifts on crop performance remain poorly understood. Here, we examined how common orchard inputs, including wood mulch, glyphosate, and humic acid, affect citrus root and rhizosphere microbiomes, leaf nutrient trajectories, and tree performance over a 3-year field experiment. Mulch emerged as the dominant driver of fungal community composition and taxonomic turnover, enriching for saprophytic fungi. Conversely,

Trichoderma crassum WMM-1-7 reshapes the rhizosphere metabolome of Pseudostellaria heterophylla with benefits.

Pseudostellaria heterophylla (Miq.) Pax ex Pax et Hoffm. is a medicinally and economically critical plant cultivated for its tuberous roots, with a documented history in traditional medicine spanning three millennia. Under the escalating pressures of global climate change (e.g., drought and soil salinization), ensuring stable and high-yield production of P. heterophylla is imperative for market sustainability. The beneficial fungus T. crassum has demonstrated potential in enhancing crop abiotic stress resistance through multiple biological processes. Critically, Trichoderma-mediated rhizospher

DOM-microbe interactions shape carbon storage strategies in rhizosphere and detritus-rich wetland soils.

Wetland macrophytes are associated with carbon storage through photosynthetic CO2 uptake and interactions with microbes. Rhizodeposition and detritus accumulation represent two key pathways examined in this study. However, how dissolved organic matter (DOM) interacts with microbial carbon storage remains incompletely understood. Here, we investigated links between DOM characteristics and microbial carbon transformation pathways in Wuchang Lake using FT-ICR-MS, metagenomics, and geochemical analyses. Macrophyte presence was associated with a higher relative abundance of genes related to microbi

Rhizosphere micro-environment restructuring by foliar 24-epibrassinolide enhances wheat resilience to polyethylene nanoplastics.

INTRODUCTION: The stress effects of nanoplastics (NPs) on wheat growth have been increasingly reported. The plant growth regulator 24-epibrassinolide (EBL) shows potential in mitigating abiotic stress, but the mechanisms by which it alleviates NPs toxicity-particularly through root metabolites, rhizosphere metabolites, and rhizosphere microbial communities-remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate how EBL mitigates polyethylene nanoplastics (PE-NPs) stress in wheat, focusing on plant growth, root metabolism, rhizosphere metabolites, and rhizosphere microbial communities. Genotypic Variation in Rice Root Exudates Controls Biological Nitrification Inhibition Efficiency in the Rhizosphere.

Nitrification in agricultural soils drives significant nitrogen fertiliser losses and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, particularly in intensively fertilised rice systems. Biological nitrification inhibition (BNI), mediated by plant-derived compounds, offers a promising nature-based strategy to mitigate these losses, but the factors controlling BNI potential remain poorly understood. In this study, BNI mechanisms across five rice genotypes were investigated by combining plant physiology, soil nitrification dynamics and exudate metabolomics. Nitrifier suppression was strongest in the rhizosphere

Characterization of Rhizosphere Oxidation Associated with Root Development in Rice Using Planar Oxygen Optodes.

Rhizosphere oxidation is a key adaptive mechanism in reductive soil environments, in which oxygen released from roots alters rhizosphere redox conditions and regulates biogeochemical processes. Rice plants possess an internal oxygen transport system, and radial oxygen loss (ROL) from roots is closely associated with root development. However, the spatial patterns of ROL in soil and their relationships with root traits remain poorly characterized. In this study, we developed a multimodal imaging system that integrates planar oxygen optodes with X-ray computed tomography to simultaneously visual

New Barrier Role of Iron Plaque: Producing Interfacial Hydroxyl Radicals to Degrade Rhizosphere Pollutants.

Iron plaque, as a natural barrier between rice and soil, can reduce the accumulation of pollutants in rice by adsorption, contributing to the safe production of rice in contaminated soil. In this study, we unveiled a new role of iron plaque, i.e., producing hydroxyl radicals (·OH) by activating root-secreted oxygen to degrade pollutants. The ·OH was produced on the iron plaque surface and then diffused to the interfacial layer between the surface and the rhizosphere environment. The iron plaque activated oxygen via a successive three-electron transfer to produce ·OH, involving superoxide and h

Beneficial shift of rhizosphere soil nutrients and metabolites under a sugarcane/peanut intercropping system.

Intercropping systems have been studied as a sustainable agricultural planting pattern to increase soil quality and crop yields. However, the relationships between metabolites and soil physicochemical properties remain poorly understood under sugarcane/peanut intercropping system. Thus, we determined the rhizosphere soil physicochemical properties, and analyzed rhizosphere soil metabolites and root metabolites by metabolomics method under monoculture and intercropping patterns of sugarcane and peanut. The results showed that pH, the contents of total phosphorus (P), total potassium (K), availa

Rhizosphere bacterial community composition affects cadmium and arsenic accumulation in rice (Oryza sativa L.).

Cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) contamination in paddy soils poses serious health risks to humans. The accumulation of Cd and As in rice (Oryza sativa L.) depends on their bioavailability, which is affected by soil physicochemical properties and soil microbial activities. However, little is known about the intricate interplay between rice plants and their rhizosphere microbes during the uptake of Cd and As. In this study, different bacterial communities were established by sterilizing paddy soils with γ-radiation. A pot experiment using two paddy soils with different levels of contamination was

Rhizospheric phosphorus activation drives microbial degradation of tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate.

Organophosphate esters (OPEs), such as tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), undergo accelerated microbial degradation in the rhizosphere, but underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Given their structural similarity to natural organophosphorus compounds, we hypothesized that rhizospheric phosphorus cycling contributes to OPE degradation. Using DNA-stable isotope probing, we identified active TCEP degraders and linked them to soil phosphate fractions. Plant cultivation reshaped degrader communities, increasing their relative abundance by 80.7% and predicted functional gene content by 20.8%, whil

Effect of selenium hyperaccumulation on the root endophytic and rhizosphere microbiome of two Astragalus species.

Metal hyperaccumulation is prevalent throughout plant evolution, particularly in the legume family (Fabaceae), and acts as a presumed chemical defence against herbivory. However, metal hyperaccumulation can have non-target impacts on other biological interactors, including plant-microbe interactions. This information is important given the interest in utilizing hyperaccumulating plants for phytoremediation of anthropogenically contaminated soils. Here we employ a greenhouse experiment manipulating selenium level along with 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing methods to explore the effect of sele
