Excitonic energy transfer in red algal Photosystem I reveals an evolutionary bridge between cyanobacteria and plants.

Photosystem I (PSI) converts light into chemical energy with near-unity quantum efficiency, yet its energy-transfer and charge-separation mechanisms remain debated. Evolution has diversified PSI architectures: Cyanobacterial PSI trimers confine red-shifted pigments to the core, whereas plant PSI-Light Harvesting Complex Isupercomplexes incorporate extensive peripheral red and charge-transfer states that reshape trapping. The unicellular red alga Cyanidioschyzon merolae exemplifies functional diversification across distinct evolutionary branches, combining a photosystem II and plant-like monome

Resolution-Phase Immunometabolic Reprogramming by Gelidiopsis variabilis Polysaccharides: Macrophage Polarization and In Vivo Anti-Inflammatory Efficacy.

Sulfated polysaccharides from red seaweeds are emerging as versatile bioactive macromolecules. Here, we report that funoran-type galactans from Gelidiopsis variabilis (GV) function as immunometabolic reprogrammers, orchestrating inflammation resolution through targeted remodeling of amino acid and fatty acid metabolism in macrophages, potentially via receptor-mediated pathways. Cold and hot water extraction yielded structurally distinct fractions (360-3006 kDa) characterized by NMR as sulfated galactans with κ-carrageenan motifs and variable sulfation (6.6-21.5%). In RAW264.7 macrophages, frac

κ-Carrageenan from Grateloupia filicina protects against PM2.5-induced intraocular pressure elevation.

This study investigates the efficacy of GFP01, an almost pure κ-carrageenan derived from Grateloupia filicina, in counteracting intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation induced by PM2.5 exposure. GFP01, characterized by a molecular weight of 97.8 kDa, exhibits a linear backbone composed of 4-O-sulfated-β-D-galactose and 3,6-anhydro-α-D-galactose. In a murine model subjected to PM2.5-induced high IOP, GFP01 treatment significantly mitigated IOP compared to the PM2.5 group (n = 12, p < 0.01). In vitro assays revealed a 27.7 % increase in cell viability in human trabecular meshwork cells (HTMCs) trea

Antiviral and virucidal activities of sulphated polysaccharides against Japanese encephalitis virus.

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), a member of the family Flaviviridae, causes severe neurological disorders in humans. JEV infections represent one of the most widely spread mosquito-borne diseases, and therefore, it has been considered as an endemic disease. An effective antiviral drug is still unavailable to treat JEV, and current drugs only provide supportive treatment to alleviate the symptoms and stabilize patients' conditions. This study was designed to evaluate the antiviral activity of the sulphated polysaccharides "Carrageenan," a linear sulphated polysaccharide that is extracted fro

Marine organism sulfated polysaccharides exhibiting significant antimalarial activity and inhibition of red blood cell invasion by Plasmodium.

The antimalarial activity of heparin, against which there are no resistances known, has not been therapeutically exploited due to its potent anticoagulating activity. Here, we have explored the antiplasmodial capacity of heparin-like sulfated polysaccharides from the sea cucumbers Ludwigothurea grisea and Isostichopus badionotus, from the red alga Botryocladia occidentalis, and from the marine sponge Desmapsamma anchorata. In vitro experiments demonstrated for most compounds significant inhibition of Plasmodium falciparum growth at low-anticoagulant concentrations. This activity was found to o

Cell wall composition affects Cd2+ accumulation and intracellular thiol peptides in marine red algae.

Two red macroalgae species, Gracilaria cornea and Chondrophycus poiteaui, were evaluated for their intra and extracellular Cd2+ accumulation capacity, photosynthetic response and thiol peptide production. Algae were exposed for 3 and 7 days to 0.1 and 1 microg CdCl2 ml(-1) (0.89 and 8.9 microM). Intracellular accumulation of Cd2+ by G. cornea was relatively low, only comprising 20% of total metal (intracellular+extracellular). In contrast, C. poiteaui accumulated intracellularly close to 100% of total Cd2+. In both species, metal uptake was dependent on the external Cd2+ concentration, metal e

Temporal variation and functional potential of epiphytic bacterial communities associated with the brown alga Sargassum fusiforme.

The brown alga Sargassum fusiforme is an economically and nutritionally important marine macroalga widely cultivated in East Asian coastal waters. Its surface harbors diverse epiphytic bacterial communities, yet their temporal variation and functional characteristics remain insufficiently understood. In this study, we investigated the epiphytic bacterial communities associated with S. fusiforme throughout a seven-month mariculture cycle and compared them with those of eight sympatric macroalgae from three major phyla (Phaeophyta, Rhodophyta, and Chlorophyta) using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequen

pH-Dependent Extraction of Antioxidant Peptides from Red Seaweed Palmaria palmata: A Sequential Approach.

This study employed a diverse approach to extract antioxidant peptides from red seaweed Palmaria palmata, recognized for its comparatively high protein content. Initially, an aqueous extraction of the entire seaweed was performed, followed by enzymatic hydrolysis of the solid residues prepared from the first step. The effects of three different pH levels (3, 6, and 9) during the aqueous extraction were also examined. Results indicated that the solid fraction from the sequential extraction process contained significantly higher levels of proteins and amino acids than other fractions (p < 0.05).

[Spatial and biogeographic characterization of macroalgal assemblages from Bahía del Rincón, Baja California Sur, Mexico].

Macroalgal studies in Baja California Sur have dealt mainly with occurrence and seasonality, but some areas are poorly known even for these basic data. Bahia del Rincón-La Rivera is an important high-productivity fisheries area where coastal infrastructure development is under way. A spatial characterization of the marine flora from Bahia del Rincón-La Rivera was done by intensive sampling at different depths and localities with skin and SCUBA diving. At least 500 m2 were surveyed in each site. Additionally. quantitative sampling was done in ten random 25 cm2 quadrates per site. In the interti

Antiviral activities of four marine sulfated glycans against adenovirus and human cytomegalovirus.

Broad-spectrum antivirals are more needed than ever to provide treatment options for novel emerging viruses and for viruses that lack therapeutic options or have developed resistance. A large number of viruses rely on charge-dependent non-specific interactions with heparan sulfate (HS), a highly sulfated glycosaminoglycan (GAG), for attachment to cell surfaces to initiate cell entry. As such, inhibitors targeting virion-HS interactions have potential to have broad-spectrum antiviral activity. Previous research has explored organic and inorganic small molecules, peptides, and GAG mimetics to di
