Microbial Carotenoid Synthesis Optimization in Goat Cheese Whey Using the Robust Taguchi Method: A Sustainable Approach to Help Tackle Vitamin A Deficiency.

The work describes the carotenoid synthesis process by Rhodotorula glutinis P4M422 using an agro-industrial waste as the substrate, seeking a biorefinery platform approach for waste utilization to produce high-value molecules. A culture medium based on goat milk whey (GMW) was optimized via the Taguchi method (L9 array). Four factors (ethanol, carbon and nitrogen source, and pH) were evaluated at three levels. The carbon and nitrogen composition were the factors dominating the process performance. Optimized conditions were validated (Urea, 0.3% w/v; pH, 4.5; ethanol, 10% v/v; glucose, 6.0%), a

Think fungus NOT just a crypto-meningitis in AIDS!

UNLABELLED: Extrapulmonary cryptococcosis has been defined as AIDS defining illness in HIV infected people. Cryptococcal meningitis is the commonest meningitis with advanced immune deficiency. Therefore clinicians ask for tests only for detection of cryptococci which may be misleading. A prospective study of suspected fungal meningitis with CSF fungal culture is carried out. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 70 ART naive cases of suspected fungal meningitis in HIV cases were subjected to CSF cytochemistry, smear exam and CSF fungal culture. RESULTS: The CSF culture was positive in 75.6% cases of these 2

The diversity of microbial communities in Chinese milk fan and their effects on volatile organic compound profiles.

Milk fan is a cheese-like fermented milk product produced in Yunnan Province, China. In this study, we characterized the microbial communities of milk fan from 6 distinct geographical origins and investigated their generation of volatile organic compounds (VOC). The microbial communities found in all milk fan samples were dominated by Lactococcus, Lactobacillus, and Raoultella bacteria and Rhodotorula, Torulaspora, and Candida fungi. Samples from the Kunming and Weishan regions had greater bacterial richness, and samples from Xizhou had greater fungal community richness. Sixty prominent VOC (i

Marchiafava-Bignami disease: a rare entity with a poor outcome.

Marchiafava-Bignami disease is a rare affliction characterized by primary degeneration of the corpus callosum associated with chronic consumption of ethanol. The disease may occasionally occur in patients who are not alcoholics but are chronically malnourished. A complex deficiency of group B vitamins is the main etiopathogenic hypothesis, and many patients improve after the administration of these compounds. However, a good response is not always observed. The definitive diagnosis of Marchiafava-Bignami disease can be problematic and is based on features of neuroimaging studies, especially ma

[Fungal involvement of the penis in patients with penile condylomata acuminata].

In a study on 129 patients with penile condylomata acuminata we recognised an incidence of 32% penile yeast affection. Candida was found in 54%, Torulopsis in 30% and Rhodotorula in 17% of all cases. The high rate of yeasts not belonging to the candida species is remarkable. There was no correlation between our test results regarding the cell-mediated immunity against candida albicans and the local yeast infection.

Cooperative siderophore use stabilizes a protective leaf microbiome.

Plant-associated microbial communities provide crucial protection against pathogens. Specialized metabolites play key roles in plant-microbe and microbe-microbe interactions and, ultimately, in plant health; however, the molecular mechanisms underlying their plant-protecting properties remain largely unknown. Nutrient deficiency (e.g., iron) on leaf surfaces creates intense competition among microbes, driving both antagonism and cooperation. Using a gnotobiotic Arabidopsis thaliana model and a synthetic leaf microbial community, we show that community stability and plant protection depend on c

Does maritime Antarctic permafrost harbor environmental fungi with pathogenic potential?

We assessed the potentially pathogenic fungi present in Antarctic permafrost and the overlying active layer on King George, Robert, Livingston and Deception Islands in the South Shetland Islands archipelago, maritime Antarctica. Permafrost and active layer sub-samples were incubated at 37 °C to select fungi able to grow inside the human body. A total of 67 fungal isolates were obtained, 27 from the permafrost and 40 from the active layer. These represented 18 taxa of the genera Alternaria, Aspergillus, Curvularia, Penicillium, Rhodotorula and Talaromyces. The majority of fungi detected occurre

Yeast communities of primary and secondary peat swamp forests in southern Thailand.

Khanthuli peat swamp forest (PSF) is one of a few fertile peat swamp forests that remain in Thailand. It is composed of primary PSF and some areas which have been degraded to secondary PSF due to drought, wildfires and land conversion, which have resulted in a decrease in peat layers and change in the species of the plant community. In this study, diversity of yeasts in peat from both primary and secondary PSF areas of the Khanthuli PSF was determined based on culture-dependent approaches, using dilution plate and enrichment techniques. A total of 66 yeast isolates were identified by the analy

Conversion of minimally processed Sargassum to lipids with the yeast Rhodosporidium toruloides.

The conversion of brown macroalgae like Sargassum offers a secure route for biofuel production from an abundant and underutilized biomass resource; however, efficient utilization of this feedstock remains a major challenge. This study explores the feasibility of converting unwashed and minimally processed Sargassum biomass to microbial lipids with the oleaginous yeast Rhodosporidium toruloides. Acid, alkaline, and hydrothermal pretreatments with enzymatic hydrolysis using cellulase, hemicellulase, and alginate lyase enzyme cocktails were evaluated to assess their ability to deconstruct Sargass

Weakened fungus-assisted remediation of Cd(II) after addition of fibrous palygorskite.

AIMS: Rhodotorula mucilaginosa (Rho) has a strong ability to absorb heavy metals. In this study, the influences of fibrous palygorskite (Pal) on fungus-assisted remediation of Cd2+ was investigated. METHODS AND RESULTS: Three sets of treatments were performed, i.e. Cd@Rho, Cd@Pal, and Cd@Rho + Pal. R. mucilaginosa removed Cd2+ via its extracellular polymeric substances and intracellular accumulation. The high sorption helped the fungus to resist the Cd2+ stress up to 200 mg l-1. In addition, the removal rate reached 17% at 50 mg l-1 level. In contrast, the sorption of Cd2+ by palygorskite was

Study of Ecological Relationship of Yeast Species with Candida albicans in the Context of Vulvovaginal Infections.

The role of the fungal community, the mycobiota, in the health of the vagina is currently an important area of research. The emergence of new sequencing technologies and advances in bioinformatics made possible the discovery of novel fungi inhabiting this niche. Candida spp. constitutes the most important group of opportunistic pathogenic fungi, being the most prevalent fungal species in vulvovaginal infections. However, fungi such as Rhodotorula spp., Naganishia spp. and Malassezia spp. have emerged as potential pathogens in this niche, and therefore it is clinically relevant to understand th

[Fungi in the gut - the gut mycobiome].

Many different fungi, including yeasts and molds, can be found in the intestinal tract of humans constituting the gut mycobiome. In case the bacterial flora is altered, the fungal flora may react inversely. By a so-called fungal diet, however, the composition of the mycobiome can hardly be influenced. Whereas some fungi are only transiently present in the gut after oral uptake, others, such as Candida, Saccharomyces, Rhodotorula, Trichosporon, Geotrichum, amongst others, are members of the residential, autochthonous gut flora. Some of these fungi exert beneficial effects, for example by synthe

Iron acquisition mechanisms of human skin-associated fungi.

Human skin presents a nutritionally restrictive environment in which iron availability is tightly controlled by epidermal iron recycling, host iron-binding proteins, and nutritional immunity. Thus, skin-associated fungi must acquire iron from limited, often host-sequestered sources. This minireview summarizes current knowledge on iron acquisition systems in the fungal taxa most consistently identified in the human skin mycobiome: Malassezia species, Candida albicans, Candida auris, Rhodotorula mucilaginosa, and dermatophytes. These fungi appear to rely on diverse strategies, including reductiv
