We reviewed 66 cases of traumatic rib fracture by traffic accident between January 2009 and December 2011. The age of patients ranged from 18 to 88 years, with an average age of 55.6, and they were predominantly male. They met with traffic accident when driving automobiles in 30 cases, driving motorcycles in 15 cases, and walking in 9 cases. The average number of fractured ribs was 4.1±3.2.Multiple rib fractures were observed in 75.8% of patients. Injuries other than rib fractures were involved in all patients who suffered over 7 rib fractures. Except one who died of pneumonia 62 days after tr

BACKGROUND: Operative stabilization is frequently used in the clinical treatment of multiple rib fractures (MRF); however, no ideal material exists for use in this fixation. This study investigates a newly developed biodegradable plate system for the stabilization of MRF.
METHODS: Silk fiber-reinforced polycaprolactone (SF/PCL) plates were developed for rib fracture stabilization and studied using a canine flail chest model. Adult mongrel dogs were divided into three groups: one group received the SF/PCL plates, one group received standard clinical steel plates, and the final group did not un

Glucocorticoid (GC) excess, including Cushing's syndrome, is a common cause of secondary osteoporosis. Thirty to fifty percent of Cushing's syndrome patients experience non-traumatic fractures, which is often the presenting manifestation of Cushing's syndrome. However, there have been rare cases of Cushing's syndrome diagnosed only based upon bone manifestations. We describe a case of Cushing's syndrome that was diagnosed in a 44-year-old woman who initially visited our hospital due to multiple non-traumatic rib fractures. She did not exhibit any other manifestations of Cushing's syndrome such

BACKGROUND: The contribution of rib fractures to prolonged pain and disability may be underappreciated and undertreated. Clinicians are traditionally taught that the pain and disability of rib fractures resolves in 6 to 8 weeks.
METHODS: This study was a prospective observation of 203 patients with rib fractures at a level 1 trauma center. Chest wall pain was evaluated by the McGill Pain Questionnaire (MPQ) pain rating index (PRI) and present pain intensity (PPI). Prolonged pain was defined as a PRI of 8 or more at 2 months after injury. Prolonged disability was defined as a decrease in 1 or

INTRODUCTION: Maternal thoracic trauma during labor is extremely rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: A woman was presented at the Accident and Emergency Department complaining of pain over the lower thorax bilaterally which started after a difficult delivery when the obstetrician forced her lower thorax. Small right-sided haemothorax and rib fractures bilaterally were diagnosed and she was admitted to hospital. Her in-hospital stay and follow up was uneventful.
CONCLUSION: Maneuvers during labor should be applied from trained personnel and should be performed safely.

Although it is widely known that adults may sustain fractures of the anterior and/or lateral aspects of the ribs due to cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) efforts, relatively little is written about the generation of CPR-related rib fractures in the infant age range. In a series of 70 consecutive autopsies in infants ranging in age from 2 weeks to 8 months, with no history or indications of injury, the parietal pleura of the thoracic cage was stripped and the ribs carefully examined for fracture. Subtle fractures of the anterolateral aspects of the ribs were discovered in 8 (11%) of the 70 ca

Patients with multiple rib fractures often suffer from severe pain that impairs their respiratory performance. The effect of interpleural administration of bupivacaine (20 ml 0.25% every 4 h) for pain management was evaluated in ten patients. The initial interpleural injection resulted in significant pain relief and improvement of arterial oxygen tension. Two patients needed additional i.v. injections of opioids (piritramide 15-22.5 mg/24 h). In one patient a small asymptomatic pneumothorax was observed following placement of the catheter, which resolved spontaneously. No other complications w

In a retrospect study we evaluated the clinical impact of traumatic rib fractures. Our series included 96 patients treated between 1986 and 1988. Haemato- and/or pneumothorax corresponded closely to the number of fractured ribs. There was a highly significant association (p less than 0.001) between the number of fractured ribs and polytrauma. The leading cause of injuries was a traffic accident.

Rib fractures and flail chest could be fatal if gas exchange is impaired. Efficient pain relief with continuous thoracic epidural analgesia allows a good physiotherapy management without central sedation and impairment of cough reflex, this prevents pulmonary atelectasis and infection. Eighteen patients/19 were treated with success in spite of flail chest, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and minor pulmonary contusion. Intermittent positive pressure ventilation must be reserved to severe pulmonary contusion and other crushing injuries of the chest as bronchial or great vessels ruptures.

The benign condition of isolated first rib fracture is compared with the severity of intrathoracic injuries resulting from first rib fracture associated with multiple rib injuries. Seventy-five patients with 90 first rib fractures were divided into two groups. Group 1 (n = 13) included those with isolated first rib fractures and Group 2 (n = 62), those with first-rib fractures associated with multiple rib injuries. In Group 1 patients, intrathoracic injuries were mild with no major vascular injuries. Conversely, Group 2 patients sustained severe intrathoracic injury, 58% of them with aortic in

INTRODUCTION: Rib fractures are prevalent and clinically significant injuries, often associated with thoracic trauma. Despite their frequency, the precise distribution and characteristics of rib shaft fractures remain underexplored. This study investigates the distribution, location, and classification of lateral rib fractures using the AO/OTA classification, focusing on fracture patterns and the relationship to neighbored ribs.
METHODS: The study retrospectively analyzed 116 patients with 617 isolated rib fractures treated at a Level 1 trauma center over seven years. Using CT scans, fracture

BACKGROUND: Rib fracture nonunion is a probable cause of chronic pain following chest trauma, although its prevalence remains unknown. The aims of this study were to determine rib fracture nonunion prevalence following nonoperative management and to determine if presence of nonunion was associated with the number of rib fractures, or the rib fracture classification of anatomical location, type, and displacement.
METHODS: This multicenter prospective cohort study included trauma patients with three or more fractured ribs but without a flail segment, who participated in the nonoperative managem

PURPOSE: Surgical stabilization of rib fractures (SSRF) has re-emerged as an important component of chest wall trauma care, yet its history is often presented as a simple timeline rather than as a source of operative and biomechanical lessons. This literature, problem-oriented historical review re-examines earlier rib fixation strategies in order to identify the mechanical and operative problems they were intended to solve, why many disappeared, and which principles remain relevant to contemporary SSRF practice.
METHODS: A literature review was conducted focusing on historically important fix

BACKGROUND: Rib fractures are common in patients with blunt thoracic trauma. The development of pneumonia increases the risk of mortality, and therefore prevention of pneumonia is one of the main goals of treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate effects of bronchodilators on the occurrence of pneumonia in patients with posttraumatic rib fractures.
METHODS: This multicenter prospective cohort study included patients between 21 September 2021 and 20 March 2024 admitted with 3 or more rib fractures and with a Glasgow Coma Scale score of 15. Occurrence of pneumonia was recorded and pulmon

Background and Objectives: Rib fractures are common in patients with trauma, and patients with multiple rib fractures often require surgical stabilization. Because rib fractures may occur at different sites along the ribs, the technical approach to surgical stabilization varies. Here, we present a case of posterior rib fractures with multiple paraspinal fragmented rib segments that were successfully treated with costovertebral plate fixation. Case Presentation: A truck driver was injured after falling from the top of a truck. Computed tomography scans of the chest showed multiple flail segment

Atraumatic first rib fractures are an uncommon diagnosis in the emergency department and case reports are lacking in the Emergency Medicine literature. A 26-year-old man presented to the emergency department with significant right shoulder pain after weightlifting. Plain radiographs showed no fracture or dislocation with a subsequent CT revealing a first rib fracture. Given the uncommon nature of this injury, first rib fractures should be considered in patients with recent weightlifting or similarly explosive activity.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review will explore acute rib fracture management focusing on indications and timing for acute surgical stabilization of rib fractures (SSRF).
RECENT FINDINGS: SSRF is a well tolerated and effective approach for a variety of rib fracture patterns and is most commonly used to correct either clinical flail chest or multiple displaced fractures. Objective tools that assess for deranged pulmonary dynamics may identify patients with other fracture patterns who will also benefit from SSRF. Multimodal analgesia approaches are essential regardless of whether SSRF is pursued; i

First rib stress fractures are uncommon in athletes and diagnosis requires a high degree of clinical suspicion. Diagnostic delay may increase risk of poor healing and long-term complications. Case reports and series describe these injuries primarily in overhead athletes; proposed contributing factors include anatomic susceptibility to stress and repetitive opposing muscular forces. We describe an ice hockey goalie with acute-on-chronic thoracic back pain who was found to have a first rib stress fracture, which to our knowledge is the first reported in this sport. We hypothesize that biomechani
