Blunt and penetrating injuries caused by rubber bullets during the Israeli-Arab conflict in October, 2000: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Low-velocity rubber bullets were used by Israeli police to control riots by Israeli-Arabs in early October, 2000. We aimed to establish the factors that contribute to severity of blunt and penetrating injuries caused by these missiles. METHODS: We analysed medical records of 595 casualties admitted. We assessed relation of severity of injury to type of bullet, anatomical region of injury, and final outcome. Severity of injury was established by the abbreviated injury scale, and we calculated injury severity score. FINDINGS: 151 males and one female (age range 11-59 years) were in

Demonstration control agents: evaluation of 64 cases after massive use in Istanbul.

An uncontrolled use of "demonstration control agents" commonly known as "teargas agents" has recently been a common practice in Turkey. One of the first massive uses of these agents had been during a meeting of the North Atlantic Council and NATO in 2004, in Istanbul. After the demonstrations, 64 patients were evaluated and treated by the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey. Their files have been reviewed retrospectively and were classified regarding age, sex, physical findings related of chemical agents, and other injuries. The patients were received 1 to 9 days after the chemical gas exposure.

This comprehensive review, the first in a 2-part series, examines chemical warfare agents (CWAs) that primarily cause direct tissue damage, with emphasis on dermatologic manifestations. Despite international prohibitions through the Chemical Weapons Convention, CWAs continue to pose significant threats in contemporary conflicts. Part I focuses on caustics (corrosive agents), vesicants (including mustards, arsenicals, and halogenated oximes), and choking agents (ammonia, bromine, chlorine, phosphorus, and others), exploring their history, chemistry, pathophysiology, and clinical presentations.

Hostility and Cognitive Complexity: A Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: We can see outbreaks of social violence (notably wars, riots, and revolutions), both historically and in the current social situation. Some authors point to the impact of hostility on human cognitive processes and on decision making, and through these factors - on aggressive behaviour. Moreover, some retrospective studies note the role of cognitive complexity in the peaceful resolution of conflicts (including international conflicts). These findings prompted us to ask whether the two phenomena are related. To answer this question a meta-analysis of correlation between hostility and

Child and Caregiver Concordance of Potentially Traumatic Events Experienced by Orphaned and Abandoned Children.

Exposure to trauma is associated with significant emotional and behavioral difficulties among children (Perepletchikova & Kaufman, 2010). Overall, reports of trauma and violence experienced by children are discrepant from those of their caregivers (Lewis et al., 2012). Even less is known about the extent of concordance between orphans and their caregivers. This study examines the correlates of concordance in reported traumatic experiences between 1,269 orphaned and abandoned children (OAC) and their caregivers. The OAC lived in family-settings in 5 low and middle income countries and were part

Orbito-cranial penetrating head injury by tear gas canister: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Orbito-cranial penetrating injuries caused by tear gas canisters (TGCs) are rare but devastating incidents. These injuries combine severe kinetic trauma with chemical irritation, resulting in complex neurosurgical emergencies that demand prompt multidisciplinary intervention. CASE DESCRIPTION: This report describes a 27-year-old male who sustained a penetrating orbital injury from a TGC during a protest. The patient presented with a Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score of 9, a fractured skull, herniated brain tissue, and multiple intracranial hemorrhages. Emergency craniotomy was perfor

A Newborn Case of Esophagus and Vocal Cord Burn After CS (O-Chlorobenzylindene Malononitrile) Gas Inhalation.

Among the agents used for self-defense, O-chlorobenzylidene malononitrile (CS) is the most commonly used substance. It has been suggested that CS use is characterized by rapid onset of action, short duration of action, and minimal side effects. When the clinical situations and case series resulting from exposure to CS were examined, we saw that no cases of exposure during the neonatal period were identified. A male baby born at 40 weeks, weighing 3260 grams, was brought to the emergency room on the 24th postnatal day with bruising and respiratory distress due to a stranger spraying CS into his

Cardiopulmonary function and dysregulated cardiopulmonary reflexes following acute oleoresin capsicum exposure in rats.

Cardiopulmonary functions such as respiratory depression, severe irritation, inflamed respiratory tract, hyperventilation and, tachycardia are the most affected ones when it comes to the riot control agent oleoresin capsicum (OC) exposure. However, no studies have been done to elucidate the mechanism underlying deterioration of the combined cardiopulmonary functions. Parameters such as acute respiratory, cardiac, parameters and ultrasonography (USG) measurements were investigated in an in vivo setup using Wistar rats at 1 h and 24 h post inhalation exposure to 2%, 6% and 10% OC, whereas, cell

The traumatic potential of a projectile shot from a sling.

Herein, we analyze the energy parameters of stones of various weights and shapes shot from a sling and based on this data evaluate its traumatic potential. Four police officers proficient in the use of a sling participated in the trials. The following projectile types, shot using an overhead technique at a target 100m away were: round steel balls of different sizes and weights (24mm, 57g; 32mm, 135g; 38mm, 227g); different shaped stones weighing 100-150g and 150-200g and a golf ball (47g). Our data indicated that projectiles shot from unconventional weapons such as a sling, have serious trauma

Unintended cutaneous reactions to CS spray.

CS spray (2-chlorobenzylidene malononitrile 5% w/v in methyl isobutyl ketone) has been used by the police force in the UK as an incapacitant for nearly a decade. It causes a number of well-recognized cutaneous reactions, which are generally regarded as short-lived. These include skin burning, erythema and blistering. However, a range of unpredictable cutaneous reactions to CS spray may also occur. We have found contact allergy, leukoderma, initiation or exacerbation of seborrhoeic dermatitis, and aggravation of rosacea following CS spray exposure in 6 police officers and 1 doorman. These skin
