Thoracic robotics at the Heart Hospital Baylor Plano: the first 20 cases.

A da Vinci Robotic Surgical System was purchased for The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano in fall 2011 and a program for robotic-assisted thoracic surgery commenced at the facility. Successive thoracic patients were offered and accepted a robotic-assisted operation. No patient was excluded because of age, height, weight, or comorbidities. The first 20 patients are summarized herein. Of the first 10 operations, only one was a lobectomy. As the program staff gained experience, seven of the latter 10 procedures were lobectomies. The average length of stay was 2.6 days (longest, 4 days). The average op

Bio-Templated Ultra-Sensitive Magneto-Plasmonic Photocatalytic Particles Integrated into Soft Robotics.

Plasmonic photocatalysts that combine magnetic maneuverability with visible-light activity offer a promising avenue for autonomous water purification. However, integrating these functionalities into a scalable, reusable architecture remains challenging. Here, we report a mucin-mediated green synthesis of a gold/maghemite heterostructured nanoparticle system. X-ray diffraction confirmed the formation of spinel γ-Fe2O3 and face-centered-cubic Au, with crystallite sizes of 4.6 ± 0.8 and 25.7 ± 4.3 nm, respectively. STEM-EDS revealed Au-rich nanoparticles distributed on the γ-Fe2O3-mucin scaffold,

Robotics and artificial intelligence applications in neurorehabilitation: a bibliometric analysis (2003-2025).

BackgroundRobotic and artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted neurorehabilitation has emerged as a rapidly growing interdisciplinary field, integrating engineering innovations with clinical practice to enhance motor and cognitive recovery in neurological disorders. While research in this domain has expanded substantially over the last two decades, only a few bibliometric studies have examined related topics (e.g., new technologies in neurorehabilitation, rehabilitation robotics after stroke, AI in stroke care), and, to our knowledge, no study has provided a comprehensive bibliometric mapping spe

4D printing of stimuli-responsive hydrogel actuators for intelligent biomedical soft robotics.

4D printing, or additive manufacturing of stimuli-responsive materials, is transforming soft robotics by enabling the fabrication of complex, adaptive systems that evolve in shape and function over time. Due to their exceptional responsiveness and biocompatibility, hydrogels are well suited for 4D printing because they mimic the physicochemical and biochemical properties of natural tissues while generating programmable mechanical work that bridges stimuli-responsive chemistry and biomimetic motion. This article reviews the state of the art in 4D-printed hydrogel actuators across emerging biome

Pros and cons of sociality across ecological niches: a swarm robotics approach.

The evolution of language is closely linked to an increase in human sociality. But when is increased sociality an adaptive strategy? Swarm Robotics, which studies the collective behaviors of large populations of interacting robots with simple embodied cognition, is an ideal testbed for studying the environmental conditions that may favor the evolution of more social behaviors and cooperative language. Here, we introduce the notion of parametrizable sociality to classic swarm robotics models, and test the foraging and communication behaviors of robots with different degrees of sociality under d

Bio-inspired cognitive robotics vs. embodied AI for socially acceptable, civilized robots.

Although cognitive robotics is still a work in progress, the trend is to "free" robots from the assembly lines of the third industrial revolution and allow them to "enter human society" in large numbers and many forms, as forecasted by Industry 4.0 and beyond. Cognitive robots are expected to be intelligent, designed to learn from experience and adapt to real-world situations rather than being preprogrammed with specific actions for all possible stimuli and environmental conditions. Moreover, such robots are supposed to interact closely with human partners, cooperating with them, and this impl

Mapping Robotics and Occupation-Based Practice in Stroke Rehabilitation: A Scoping Review.

Stroke rehabilitation often focuses on motor recovery, with robotic-assisted therapy showing promise in enhancing upper limb function. However, these interventions primarily target physical improvements and often neglect occupation-based practices. This scoping review examined how robotic rehabilitation aligns with occupational therapy principles by examining how real-life tasks are incorporated. Using Arksey and O'Malley's framework, we systematically reviewed studies published between January 2014 and July 2024 across PubMed, CINAHL, and Scopus. Of the 15 studies analyzed, most employed exos

Toward Development of Novel Remote Ultrasound Robotic System Using Soft Robotics Technology.

This paper reports on the development of a novel soft robotic system for remote ultrasound applications. Direct contact of the ultrasound probe with the patient's body represents a safety risk and therefore control of the probe's positioning and applied force is a crucial task. The proposed robot uses a passive control system that provides safe interaction between the robot and the patient by leveraging soft robotics technology. The soft robot's structure can be considered as a nonlinear spring which can be designed to exert a safe force within the robot's workspace to guarantee the safety of

Improving Efficiency and Standardization in a Robotics Program: A Quality Improvement Project.

After an evaluation of the growing robotics program at Christiana Care Health System in Newark, Delaware, perioperative leaders identified needs related to a lack of instrument set standardization and inconsistent workflow processes; these deficiencies were causing higher-than-anticipated turnaround time (ie, 59 minutes) and an excessive inventory of sterilized robotic instruments. A workgroup was created to review the results of the evaluation and develop solutions for the robotic surgery program. Goals included a 40-minute procedure turnaround time and a 35% reduction in sterilized robotic i
