Pterygodermatites (Mesopectines) niameyensis n. sp. (Nematoda: Rictulariidae), a parasite of Mastomys natalensis (Smith, 1834) (Rodentia: Muridae) from Niger.

Pterygodermatites (Mesopectines) niameyensis n. sp. is described from Mastomys natalensis in Niamey/Niger (West Africa). It differs from other species of same subgenus by the morphology of the head, which presents 4 simple cephalic papillae and nearly axial oral opening, a number of caudal papillae, precloacal cuticular formations, and the spicule length/body length ratio. Scanning electron microscopy shows the presence of 2 pairs of lateral sensory structures for male worms.

Penial morphology in three species of Brazilian tuco-tucos, Ctenomys torquatus, C. minutus, and C. flamarioni (Rodentia: Ctenomyidae).

The present study analyses the glans penis and baculum morphology of three Brazilian tuco-tucos, Ctenomys torquatus Lichtenstein, 1830, Ctenomys minutus Nehring, 1887 and Ctenomys flamarioni Travi, 1981, in order to identify possible variations and understand some more about this taxonomically complex group. We used fixed penis from 15 previously listed adult specimens. For a more detailed baculum analysis, the penis underwent dissection and diaphanisation, whereas to analyse the glans penis surface we used Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Results showed striking differences in baculum morp

Reproductive isolation due to the genetic incompatibilities between Thrichomys pachyurus and two subspecies of Thrichomys apereoides (Rodentia, Echimyidae).

We tested intrinsic reproductive isolation between 3 taxa of the South American caviomorph rodent Thrichomys (Rodentia, Echimyidae): T. pachyurus, T. apereoides subsp. apereoides and T. apereoides subsp. laurentius. They were mated in captivity and produced viable progeny. Some F1 hybrid females were fertile, whereas all F1 males were sterile. Histological examination revealed meiotic arrest at the primary spermatocyte stage. No sperm was detected in testes or epididymes. Electron microscopic analysis of surface spread synaptonemal complexes revealed a complete failure of chromosome pairing in

Phenotypic plasticity in response to low quality diet in the South American omnivorous rodent Akodon azarae (Rodentia: Sigmodontinae).

We studied the responses in the omnivorous rodent A. azarae submitted to a low quality diet at morphological, physiological and biochemical levels. At short term, a decrease in body mass occurred. A later increase in food consumption constituted a strategy that allowed a temporal recovery of physical condition. However, hyperphagia appeared not to be enough to maintain physical condition after 30 days of low quality diet consumption. At the morphological level, an increase in length (9%) of the anterior portion of the gut occurred, the part of the gut where digestion and absorption take place.

Interferon-gamma levels during the course of Trypanosoma cruzi infection of Calomys callosus (Rodentia-Cricetidae) and Swiss mice.

Serum levels of interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) were evaluated in Calomys callosus and Swiss mice during the course of infection by four strains of Trypanosoma cruzi. All strains stimulated the production of this interleukine; however, the timing of its onset and permanence varied among strains and between the two animal models. When chronically infected animals with no detectable serum IFN-gamma were challenged with the homologous strain, they produced quantities comparable with those obtained during the acute phase of infection. In C. callosus there was a correlation between H2O2 liberation by

Soft anatomy and morphological variation in Daptomys peruviensis (Rodentia, Cricetidae), a rare ichthyomyine from the northwestern Amazonian forests.

The recently resurrected genus Daptomys Anthony, 1929 includes poorly known small cricetid rodents that are widely distributed in tropical South America. Along with Neusticomys Anthony, 1921, these species are the most terrestrial members of the tribe, which is otherwise distinguished by adaptations that allow species to live in both aquatic and terrestrial environments. Newly collected Ecuadorean specimens provide complementary information of the craniodental and soft anatomy of Daptomys, focusing on rhinarium morphology, soft palate, stomach, caecum configuration, and other features. The First Quaternary Record of the Rodent Akodon kadiweu Brandão, Percequillo, D'Elía, Paresque, & Carmignotto, 2021 (Rodentia: Cricetidae: Sigmodontinae).

Rodents of the genus Akodon comprise 41 extant species, and are considered the most diverse genus of the tribe Akodontini. The most recently described extant species is Akodon kadiweu, known exclusively from Serra da Bodoquena, a karstic region located in Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil. Some sub-fossil and fossil specimens of Akodon have been reported in recent years for Brazil, but most remain unidentified at the species level. Here we examine the identity of Quaternary specimens of Akodon sp. from the limestone cave Nossa Senhora Aparecida, located in Serra da Bodoquena. Quantitative chara

Demodex castoris sp. nov. (Acari: Demodecidae) parasitizing Castor fiber (Rodentia), and other parasitic arthropods associated with Castor spp.

A new species of demodecid mite, Demodex castoris sp. nov. (Acari: Prostigmata: Demodecidae), is described based on adult stages from the skin of the nasal region of the Eurasian beaver Castor fiber Linnaeus, 1758, collected in Poland. This is the first detection of a representative demodecid mite in rodents of the suborder Castorimorpha and also represents the first detection of a skin mite in Eurasian beavers. The new species is a small skin mite (average 173 µm in length) characterized by sexual dimorphism related to body proportions. D. castoris sp. nov. was observed in 4 out of 6 beavers

Comparative chromosome banding analysis of three South American species of rice rats of the genus Oryzomys (Rodentia, Sigmodontinae).

Comparative G- and C-banding analysis in three species of rice rats, namely Oryzomys megacephalus from Peru and French Guiana, O. yunganus (Peru) and O. nitidus (Bolivia) was carried out. It revealed that Peruvian O. megacephalus (2N = 52, NFa = 62) and that from French Guiana (2N = 54, NFa = 64) differ from each other by one Rb translocation and one heterochromatic arm addition/deletion. Three further Rb translocations separate them from O. yunganus (2N = 58, NFa = 62). Only 16 out of 39 autosomal pairs of O. nitidus (2N = 80, NFa = 86) shared homologous banding patterns with O. yunganus, 4 o

Chromosome Asynapsis Is the Main Cause of Male Sterility in the Interspecies Hybrids of East Asian Voles (Alexandromys, Rodentia, Arvicolinae).

Closely related mammalian species often have differences in chromosome number and morphology, but there is still a debate about how these differences relate to reproductive isolation. To study the role of chromosome rearrangements in speciation, we used the gray voles in the Alexandromys genus as a model. These voles have a high level of chromosome polymorphism and substantial karyotypic divergence. We investigated testis histology and meiotic chromosome behavior in the captive-bred colonies of Alexandromys maximowiczii, Alexandromys mujanensis, two chromosome races of Alexandromys evoronensis

Trypanosoma (Megatrypanum) lainsoni n. sp. from Mesomys hispidus (Rodentia: Echimyidae) in Brazil: trypomastigotes described from experimentally infected laboratory mice.

We report the detection, isolation and description of Trypanosoma (Megatrypanum) lainsoni n. sp. from a caviomorph rodent, Mesomys hispidus (Rodentia: Echimyidae), obtained in the Rio Negro region of the state of Amazonas, in northern Brazil. Laboratory-bred white mice (Mus musculus) and rats (Rattus rattus) were inoculated with large numbers of culture forms by intraperitoneal route, and trypomastigotes appeared in their blood 3-8 days post-inoculation. One single epimastigote was also found in Mus musculus. Similar attempts to infect Rattus norvegicus, hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus), the op
