Syphilis remains a global health problem with an estimated 12 million people infected each year. In Romania a decrease in the syphilis prevalence can be observed. From 2002 (12,702 cases) and 2003 (9,698 cases) until 2006 (5,657 syphilis cases) the reduction can be explained through the intensified efforts of the Ministry of Pubic Health to fight STI. The decrease is probably not related to an improvement of the general health status and not a consequence of some epidemiological prevention and control measures but probably was done by the reorientation of the patients to the general practition

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory disorders remain a significant public‑health concern across Europe, and traditional ethnomedical knowledge continues to play an important role in several Transylvanian communities. This study aims to document the plant species applied for respiratory conditions in Transylvania and to evaluate whether their uses are supported by current pharmacological evidence. By systematically mapping vernacular practices and comparing them with available biomedical data, we seek to clarify the therapeutic relevance and potential scientific grounding of these traditional remedies.

Background: Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) has undergone notable clinical changes over recent decades, with asymptomatic cases now prevailing in Western countries. In contrast, a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations remains common in Romania, an Eastern European country. This study aims to provide a representative descriptive analysis of clinical presentations and related complications observed in this setting. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional, single-center study of 413 consecutive PHPT cases diagnosed between 2000 and 2020 at a tertiary endocrinology center in Romania. Data i

Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite with high zoonotic potential. Currently, no information is available on natural toxoplasmosis in domestic rabbits in Romania; therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the seroprevalence of T. gondii IgG antibodies and to determine the prevalence of T. gondii DNA in domestic rabbits in our country. In total, 372 domestic rabbits were tested. Blood samples were obtained from 352 animals and tissue samples were obtained from 49 animals, of which 29 animals provided paired blood-tissue samples. Samples were collected from pet rabbits and fro

This article explores the changing meaning of cremation in late interwar Romania. From the opening of the Cenuşa Crematorium in Bucharest in 1928 to the collapse of the National Legionary State in 1941, debates about cremation moved beyond theological questions and became increasingly connected to religion, nationalism, antisemitism, and state power. Particular attention is paid to the clandestine cremation of twenty-four Legionaries after the assassination of Prime Minister Armand Călinescu in 1939 and to their exhumation in 1940. These events changed the symbolic significance of the cremator

SARS-CoV-2 has been described in more than 54 animal species, including wildlife, zoo animals and livestock. In the present study, conducted during 2021 and 2022 at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine from Iasi, Romania, we studied the anthropogenic transmission of SARS-CoV-2 to pets by investigating active or prior infections of cats (n = 41) and dogs (n = 99) from the households of owners with confirmed COVID-19. Tests on an oropharyngeal swab from one cat revealed the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA 10 days after the onset of COVID-19 in its owner and another cat displayed SARS-CoV-2 seroconversi

Background/Objectives: The increase in life expectancy and the share of the elderly population has the effect of increasing the number of osteoporotic hip fractures. At the same time, the number of total hip arthroplasty (THA) interventions is continuously increasing. The objective of this study is to investigate the incidence rates of hip fractures during the period 2008-2019, in Romania, among people who are at least 40 years old, as well as to determine the extent to which the increase in the prevalence of people who have undergone THA has affected the incidence of hip fractures, given that

Background/Objectives: Romania remains endemic for measles due to suboptimal vaccine coverage rates. During the last three epidemics, the highest incidence of measles was recorded in children younger than 1 year, who should have been partially protected by maternal antibodies. A nationwide cross-sectional seroprevalence study was conducted on persons of fertile age, to evaluate potential immunity gaps in the population. Methods: Between June and October 2020, 959 serum samples were collected from individuals aged 25-44 years (46.5% females) from all the geographic regions in Romania. Measles I

Mpox has become a significant health concern since the global outbreak that began in 2022. The aim of this study is to present the epidemiological situation of Mpox in Romania during 2022-2023 and to describe a severe case of Mpox in a patient who survived despite multiple co-pathologies. Forty-seven confirmed cases were reported at the national level, all in men, in 2022. The median age was 33 years. Twenty-six cases involved men who have sex with men (MSM), and twenty-three tested positive for HIV. We also describe a severe case involving a 34-year-old bisexual male with newly diagnosed AIDS

The prevalence and intensity of infection with digestive, liver, and pulmonary parasites in wild boars in Romania was determined by examination of 280 cadavers from 26 hunting grounds during the period 2012-2016. Eleven genera of parasites were recovered: nine within the digestive system (Eimeria, Ascaris, Globocephalus, Gongylonema, Hyostrongylus, Oesophagostomum, Physocephalus, Trichuris, and Macracanthorinchus); and two (Dicrocoelium, Metastrongylus ) located in the hepatic and pulmonary systems. The overall prevalence of infection was 80.7% (n = 280). Polyparasitism was found in 82.8% of p

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) are haematophagous insects that transmit the protozoan parasite Leishmania infantum (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae), the main causative agent of both zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and canine leishmaniasis (CanL) in the Mediterranean basin. Eight species of sand flies have been previously recorded in Romania: Phlebotomus papatasi, Phlebotomus alexandri, Phlebotomus sergenti, Phlebotomus perfiliewi, Phlebotomus neglectus, Phlebotomus longiductus, Phlebotomus balcanicus and Sergentomyia minuta. The present study aimed to evaluate the extent of Dirofilaria immitis and D. repens exposure in humans from eastern and southern areas of Romania and central Moldova by serological methods. The serological screening was performed on a total of 450 serum samples (187 from Romania and 263 from Moldova). The sera were collected using a convenience sampling with the help of physicians from the hospitals of the study areas. All samples were analysed by a non-commercial ELISA test for the detection of IgG antibodies against adult somatic antigens of D. immitis and D. repens. The results showed a tot

The pentastomid Linguatula serrata, the so-called "tongue worm", is a nasopharyngeal parasite of dogs widely distributed in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. While linguatulosis was formerly also endemic in Central Europe, it now mainly plays a role as an imported parasitosis. Because L. serrata is known to be a zoonotic agent, a potential infection risk for the owner and other contact persons needs to be considered. Here, a 1.5-year-old, mixed-breed sheepdog, which had been imported from Romania, was presented because of serous nasal discharge and a pharyngeal "throat-clearing" noise. Upon sn

INTRODUCTION: In Romania, no nationwide data for acromegaly treatment and control rate are available. Our objective was to assess the acromegaly control rate in a tertiary referral centre, which covers an important part of Romanian territory and population of patients with acromegaly.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed the records of all 164 patients (49 males and 115 females; median age 55 [47, 63.5] years) with newly or previously diagnosed acromegaly, who have been assessed at least once in our tertiary referral centre between January 1, 2012 and March 31, 2016. This sample represents 13.6

BACKGROUND: Birds are important hosts and dispersers of parasitic arthropods and vector-borne zoonotic pathogens. Particularly migratory species may carry these parasites over long distances in short time periods. Migratory hotspots present ideal conditions to get a snapshot of parasite and pathogen diversity of birds migrating between continents. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence and diversity of Rickettsia spp. in ticks collected from birds at a migratory hot-spot in the Danube Delta, Romania, eastern Europe.
METHODS: DNA was extracted from ticks that were collected from

In the actual context of an increased TB endemia (notification rate of 90.5 per thousand, meaning 21457 cases in 2010, but with a constant decreasing trend in the last 8 years), we wanted to see what is the share and structure of extra-respiratory tuberculosis in the period 2007-2010. In the interval 2007-2010 have been registered annually between 1252-1267 extra-respiratory TB cases. Extra-respiratory TB have been between 30% and 42,1% from all TB cases registered annually with the extra-pulmonary TB. In the descending order of cases recorded with TB extra respiratory in 2010, the first was e
