Clinical and microbiological study of local minocycline delivery (Periocline) following scaling and root planing in recurrent periodontal pockets.

This study was designed to evaluate the clinical and microbiological effects of local administration of 2% minocycline-HCl ointment (Periocline) combined with scaling and root planing in recurrent periodontal pockets. Thirty-three sites were selected for this examination. The sites had probing depths greater than 5 mm and loss of attachment greater than 2 mm within the previous 3 months. They were assigned as test (22 sites) or control sites (11 sites). After meticulous scaling (SC) and root planing (RP), Periocline was delivered into the periodontal pockets of test sites: control sites were i

[A longitudinal clinical study of the efficacy of tetracyclines combined with root planing in patients with periodontal disease].

A retrospective longitudinal study was performed to assess the effectiveness of tetracycline therapy associated with root planing compared with root planing alone in patients affected by medium to severe periodontal disease. From an analysis of results it appeared that the combined therapy was generally more successful, even though statistical significance was only achieved in cases of healing angular bone lesions. In conclusion, larger studies should be carried out to contribute to broaden the spectrum of indications for the use of antibiotic therapy in periodontal disease in adults.

Therapeutic efficacy of clindamycin gel as an adjunct to scaling and root planing therapy in chronic periodontal disease.

Clindamycin, a lincosamide antibiotic, has been under-recognized as an antimicrobial agent for use in dentistry. The aim of the present work was to evaluate clinical efficacy of 2% clindamycin gel in addition to the basic mechanical periodontal therapy. At baseline, scaling and root planing (SRP) was performed at all 50 subjects (control group and test group). Clindamycin gel was applied after SRP only in the test group. Clinical measurements including periodontal pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), bleeding on probing (BOP) and plaque index (PI) were done at baseline, and at

A Comparative Analysis of Three Antioxidants in Addition to Scaling and Root Planing in Stage Three Grade B Periodontitis.

INTRODUCTION: The main feature of periodontitis is the development of periodontal pockets as a secondary consequence, which is mainly caused by an excessive immune response to the dental biofilm. The prime factor in the pathogenesis of periodontitis is an increase in oxidative stress. Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated that antioxidant supplementation can reduce endogenous antioxidant depletion and the oxidative damage that goes along with it. Hence, antioxidant therapy in the treatment of periodontal disease may prove to be a promising tool. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study is

Clinical efficacy of scaling and root planing with and without metronidazole on glycemic control: three-arm randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Treating periodontitis through non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT) may improve glycemic control in type-2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) patients. However, the evidence to maintain this improvement beyond four months is insufficient. Hence, this trial was conducted to assess clinical efficacy of NSPT on glycemic control in T2DM patients. METHODS: This three-arm randomized controlled trial recruited 150 known T2DM participants (35-65 years), suffering from moderate to severe periodontitis, having HbA1c level ≥ 6.5% at baseline. Participants were followed up at 3 and 6 months. Interve

Systemic lycopene as an adjunct to scaling and root planing in chronic periodontitis patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Patients with type 2 diabetes have an increased prevalence of periodontitis and, in turn, periodontitis adversely affects the diabetic status. Oxidative stress plays a key role in affecting the pathophysiology of both the diseases and adjunctive systemic antioxidant therapy may have beneficial effect on the treatment outcome. This study was planned to compare the efficacy of systemic antioxidant therapy with lycopene as an adjunct to scaling and root planing versus scaling and root planing alone in chronic periodontitis patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Microbiologic testing and outcomes of full-mouth scaling and root planing with or without amoxicillin/metronidazole in chronic periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that use of systemic antibiotics should be limited to patients with specific microbiologic profiles. The main purpose of the present analysis was to study whether microbiologic testing before therapy was of value in predicting which patients would specifically benefit from adjunctive amoxicillin and metronidazole, given in the context of full-mouth scaling and root planing (SRP) within 48 hours. METHODS: This was a 6-month, single-center, double-masked, placebo-controlled, randomized longitudinal study. Fifty-one patients received full-mouth periodontal debri
