Root resorption that occurs in permanent teeth is an unwanted process and is considered pathologic. Although apical root resorption occurs in individuals who have never experienced orthodontic tooth movement, the incidence among treated individuals is seen to be significantly higher. Some resorption occurs in most orthodontic patients, but because of repair the changes are difficult to detect with radiographic examination and therefore are clinically insignificant. This article gives a review of the various types of root resorption, the etiological factors, the biology and the identification o

Root resorption seems to be related to a complex combination of mechanical factors and biological activity, which comprehends the role of immunologic structures including specialized cells. The aim of this research was to explain the development of the process--from mineralization to the destruction of hard tissues--and the possible relationship between root resorption and immunology, along with discussing current concepts described in the literature.

BACKGROUND: Cases of generalized idiopathic root resorption have been reported in the literature. However the majority of previously reported cases have affected adults, and it has been rare that a possible link to a medical condition has been found.
CASE REPORT: The subject of this case report was 11 years old when generalized root resorption was first diagnosed. This case report is unusual in that the resorption may be connected to a bone dysplasia. The possible medical diagnoses and links to tooth resorption have been discussed for this very rare case.
CONCLUSION: The investigation into t

OBJECTIVE: To review and investigate the validity of various 2D quantitative measurement techniques, and to explore the third dimension of root resorption.
DESIGN: A review of the literature involving various quantitative evaluation of root resorption.
RESULTS: Quantitative evaluation of resorption using radiographs has proven to be highly inaccurate because of magnification errors and their inability to be readily repeated and reproduced. Studies using histology sections of samples have proven to be laborious and technique sensitive. Inherent parallax errors and loss of material in data tra

External resorption is sequelae of necrotic periodontal membrane over a large area of root following an injury to the tooth. This usually occurs after severe dental injuries such as intrusion, severe luxations or exarticulation injuries complicated by a prolonged extra oral period. This case report presents a clinical and radiographic follow up (13 months) of treatment of inflammatory external root resorption on maxillary central incisor using Vitapex. Gradual healing of resorption was observed radiographically with no tenderness or pathological mobility.

Although external root resorption (ERR) is a physiological process in deciduous dentition, it is very infrequent in permanent dentition - where the phenomenon is related to the existence of inadequate occlusal forces, periodontal pathology and microtraumatisms, etc. However, in many cases root resorption cannot be attributed to any concrete cause; such cases are defined as idiopathic external root resorption (IERR). Epidemiological studies have found that the underlying cause can only be established in 5% of all ERR. The present study describes three cases of IERR with different degrees of inv

Extracanal invasive resorption originates in the periodontal ligament, making it difficult to determine during treatment whether all resorption cells have been eliminated. Consequently, periodontal defects and recurrence of the process are quite common. This process can occur supraosseously or subosseously and treatment may or may not include endodontic therapy. The pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment modalities are presented along with a clinical case with an 18-month follow-up as an example of the challenges associated with treatment of this lesion.

External resorptions associated with inflammation in marginal tissues present a difficult clinical situation. Many times, lesions are misdiagnosed and confused with caries and internal resorptions. As a result inappropriate treatment is often initiated. This paper provides three-dimensional representations of cervical external resorption, based on X-ray microfocus-tomographical scanning of a case, which will aid the dental practitioner in recognizing characteristic features during clinical inspection. In addition, histopathological examination reveals the cellular morphology of the adjacent ti

This study investigated the association of appliance type and tooth extraction with the incidence of external apical root resorption (EARR) of posterior teeth following orthodontic treatment. Pre- and posttreatment orthopantomograms were compared for 97 patients and a 4-grade ordinal scale used to measure EARR. The incidence of EARR was positively associated with tooth position (P < .001), appliance type (P = .038), and extractions (P = .001). This was observed in an overall analysis mutually adjusted for the effects of age at start of treatment, pretreatment overbite and overjet, use of headg

A case of multiple idiopathic apical root resorption in a 26-yr-old female patient is presented. A review of the literature revealed that extensive idiopathic root resorption is unusual. Neither local nor systemic etiological factors were found in our case. Examination of parents and siblings did not reveal a familiar tendency. Radiographs and clinical evaluation showed a very poor prognosis for most of the teeth present in the mouth of our patient.

This study analyzed the relationship in orthodontically treated adults between upper central incisor displacement measured on lateral cephalograms and apical root resorption measured on anterior periapical x-ray films. A multiple linear regression examined incisor displacements in four directions (retraction, advancement, intrusion, and extrusion) as independent variables, attempting to account for observed differences in the dependent variable, resorption. Mean apical resorption was 1.36 mm (sd +/- 1.46, n = 73). Mean horizontal displacement of the apex was -0.83 mm (sd +/- 1.74, n = 67); mea

Supraosseous extracanal invasive root resorption was diagnosed based on a radiographic survey, clinical examination, and microscopic examination of pulpal and exophytic soft-tissue specimens. Microscopic pulpal examination showed little or no evidence of significant inflammation. This resorptive process demonstrates extensive noncarious destruction of dentin without affecting pulpal health.

A previous investigation on the initial phase of root resorption associated with orthodontic overcompression of local areas of the periodontal ligament (PDL), indicated that a differentiation should be made between two stages: (1) the very first resorption occurring in the periphery of the main necrotic zone; and (2) the root resorption occurring on that part of the root surface situated beneath the main bulk of necrotic tissue (Brudvik and Rygh, 1993a). The aim of the present investigation was to study the latter stage. Attention was focused on: (1) the possible association between the presen

Traumatic root resorption in a mouse model has been shown to coincide with a decline in naturally occurring serum antibody levels to dentin. It has been proposed that root resorption may be dentin antibody mediated. The purpose of this study was to examine the traumatic root resorption response in mice after hyperimmunization with a crude tooth extract (dentin). The hypothesis of this study was that elevated dentin antibody titers would positively correlate with root resorption. Mice were immunized with mouse dentin and controls were sham immunized. All mice were boosted 4 weeks later with or

A comparison is made between the resorption of bone and the resorption of the mineralized tissues of teeth. The structure and function of osteoclasts are described well as the factors that regulate their activity. The cells resorbing the dental mineralized tissues are of the same cell type as osteoclasts. The dental tissues are covered by cementoblasts or odontoblasts which differ from the osteoblasts in that they do not respond to hormones and cytokines that stimulate bone resorption. Root resorption therefore seem to require damage of the cementoblastic layer in combination with necrosis or

This case report describes a radiographical, histological and histochemical study of an extracted mandibular tooth with progressive external root resorption. The cells which appeared to be responsible for the hard tissue resorption showed an intense acid phosphatase activity, similar to that of bone-resorbing cells. Some aspects on the etiology and pathogenesis of resorptive process that occurred in the present case are discussed.

This article presents a review of the literature on the action of 5 (five) possible predisponent agents of root resorption (treatment time, amount of dental movement, amount of force used, individual susceptibility and trauma) during orthodontic treatment and describes a clinical case with pronounced overjet and overbite where, the presence of resorption in one traumatized tooth limited the mechanics to light forces only.

Radiographs of a human mandibular premolar, in which five holes (resorptive defects) of differing diameters were drilled before its replacement into a human mandible, were evaluated by 11 dental faculty members. The radiographs were made at various exposure times and angulations. The observers' results were evaluated statistically. It was found that small resorptive defects were significantly more difficult to identify than larger ones. Also, angulation, exposure time, and location of the defects as defined in this study had no significant effect on the ability of observers to accurately ident

A case report of endodontic surgery of maxillary left lateral incisor with external root resorption which perforated the root canal was presented. The cause of this abnormality was due to chronic inflammation. The patient had the history of pain and swelling. After root canal filling by thermoplasticized warm gutta-percha technique, the resorption defect and the apical apex were filled with amalgam via a surgical approach. The patient remained asymptomatic 8 months later, radiographic appearance revealed a sign of bone repair.
