Penta is associated with an increased female-male mortality ratio: cohort study from Bangladesh.

Diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP) vaccine may be associated with excess female deaths. There are few studies of possible nonspecific effects of the DTP-containing vaccine Penta (DTP-hepatitis B-Haemophilus influenzae type b). We therefore investigated whether Penta vaccinations were associated with excess female deaths in rural Bangladesh. Between June 29, 2011 and April 20, 2016, we examined the mortality rates of 7644 children followed between 6 weeks and 9 months of age. We analyzed mortality using crude mortality rate ratio (MRR) and age-adjusted MRR (aMRR) from a Cox proportional hazards

Genotoxicity and sperm defects induced by 5-FU in male mice and the possible protective role of Pentas lanceolata-iridoids.

5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is a widely used antineoplastic drug. In this work, a comprehensive study was performed to detect the extent of chromosomal damage and morphological sperm defects induced by 5-FU in male mice and the possible protective role of the iridoids-rich fraction of Pentas lanceolata leaves (IFPL). Six main groups were examined in micronucleus and chromosomal assays: I- control negative, II- control positive (i.p. treated with single dose of 75 mg/kg 5-FU), III- control plant (orally administrated IFPL, 300 mg/kg, 5 consecutive days), and IV-VI- treated with IFPL (100, 200 and 300

Studies on neutralizing effect of Ophiorrhiza mungos root extract against Daboia russelii venom.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The folklore or traditional therapy in southern India widely utilizes a plethora of local herbs to treat the patients challenged with snake venom. Despite the widespread implementation of antisera therapy, the local population of the country still relies on this century's old medicinal formulas mainly due to the cost effectiveness, lesser side effects and also its cultural acceptability. The present study aims to validate the neutralizing ability of one such traditionally acclaimed antidote Ophiorrhiza mungos root extract against Russell's viper (Daboia russelii

Bioefficacy of plant-mediated gold nanoparticles and Anthocepholus cadamba on filarial vector, Culex quinquefasciatus (Insecta: Diptera: Culicidae).

Mosquito-borne diseases in India, e.g., malaria, dengue, chikungunya, filariasis, and Japanese encephalitis cause thousands of deaths per year. Mosquito control is to enhance the health and quality of life of county residents and visitors through the reduction of mosquito populations. Mosquito control is of serious concern in developing countries like India due to the lack of general awareness, development of resistance, and socioeconomic reasons. Noble metal nanoparticles have been used because of their unique optical properties; especially gold and silver have a broad absorption band in the

Flavane Dimers From Psychotria calocarpa and Their Enzyme Inhibition Activities.

Eight dimeric flavanes were isolated from the plant Psychotria calocarpa (Rubiaceae), including four stereoisomeric flavan-flavan-3-ol dimers (1-4) and four stereoisomeric flavan-3-ol-flavan-3-ol dimers (5-8). Among them, compounds 1-3 are newly identified flavan-(4→8)-flavan-3-ol dimers, named psychodiflavanols A-C, respectively. Their structures were elucidated by a comprehensive spectroscopic analysis combined with the quantum chemical calculations of electronic circular dichroism spectra. Compounds 4-8 were determined to be known flavan- (4→8)-flavan-3-ol dimer or flavan-3-ol-(4→8)-flavan-

[Research progress in pharmacological activities and pharmacokinetics of geniposidic acid].

Geniposidic acid(GA), a natural iridoid, exists in the roots, stems, leaves, flowers, bark, fruits, and seeds of medicinal plants of Rubiaceae, Eucommiaceae, and Plantaginaceae. Modern pharmacological studies have revealed that GA has multiple pharmacological activities, including organ-protective, anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, anti-osteoporosis, anti-neurodegenerative, and anti-cardiovascular effects. GA can enhance cell/organism defenses by upregulating key anti-inflammatory and antioxidant cytokines, while downregulating key node proteins in pro-inflammatory signaling pathways such as A

Infrequent use of medicinal plants from India in snakebite treatment.

Snakes have fascinated humankind for millennia. Snakebites are a serious medical, social, and economic problem that are experienced worldwide; however, they are most serious in tropical and subtropical countries. The reasons for this are 1) the presence of more species of the most dangerous snakes, 2) the inaccessibility of immediate medical treatment, and 3) poor health care. The goal of this study was to collect information concerning rare, less utilized, and less studied medicinal plants. More than 100 plants were found to have potential to be utilized as anti-snake venom across India. Data

Identification of antiplasmodial triterpenes from Keetia species using NMR-based metabolic profiling.

INTRODUCTION: The increase in multidrug resistance and lack of efficacy in malaria therapy has propelled the urgent discovery of new antiplasmodial drugs, reviving the screening of secondary metabolites from traditional medicine. In plant metabolomics, NMR-based strategies are considered a golden method providing both a holistic view of the chemical profiles and a correlation between the metabolome and bioactivity, becoming a corner stone of drug development from natural products. OBJECTIVE: Create a multivariate model to identify antiplasmodial metabolites from 1H NMR data of two African med

Uptake and persistence of the vertebrate pesticide, sodium monofluoroacetate (compound 1080), in plants of cultural importance.

Field research was undertaken to determine if naturally occurring plants utilised by a Maori (the indigenous people of New Zealand) community for food and medicine would take up the toxin sodium monofluoroacetate (Compound 1080) from baits used to control the brush-tailed possum Trichosurus vulpecula. Single baits were placed at the base of individual plants of two species, pikopiko (Asplenium bulbiferum) and karamuramu (Coprosma robusta). Plants were sampled at various times up to 56 days, and samples analyzed for 1080 content. No 1080 was detected in any of the pikopiko samples, whereas 1080
