Match and training injuries in rugby league: a review of published studies.

Rugby league is an international collision sport played by junior, amateur, semiprofessional and professional players. The game requires participants to be involved in physically demanding activities such as running, tackling, passing and sprinting, and musculoskeletal injuries are common. A review of injuries in junior and senior rugby league players published in Sports Medicine in 2004 reported that injuries to the head and neck and muscular injuries were common in senior rugby league players, while fractures and injuries to the knee were common in junior players. This current review updates

An investigation of rugby scrimmaging posture and individual maximum pushing force.

Although rugby is a popular contact sport and the isokinetic muscle torque assessment has recently found widespread application in the field of sports medicine, little research has examined the factors associated with the performance of game-specific skills directly by using the isokinetic-type rugby scrimmaging machine. This study is designed to (a) measure and observe the differences in the maximum individual pushing forward force produced by scrimmaging in different body postures (3 body heights x 2 foot positions) with a self-developed rugby scrimmaging machine and (b) observe the variatio

The dynamics of concussive head impacts in rugby and Australian rules football.

A study was commenced in 1998 at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) to investigate the dynamics of head impacts in football which resulted in concussion. Sixty-eight cases of medically verified concussion from Australian Rules Football and 32 from Rugby Union and Rugby League were analyzed. Video of each injury event was analyzed to obtain descriptive data regarding the head impact site and striking object. The video was analyzed quantitatively to obtain estimates of the closing speeds. A secondary analysis was undertaken using the conservation of momentum and energy relationships to est

Cervical vertebral dislocation in a rugby player with congenital vertebral fusion.

Congenital cervical vertebral fusion is an anomaly which decreases the normal range of spinal movement and predisposes to trauma. The case history of a rugby player with a congenital fusion who sustained permanent quadriplegia after dislocation of the lower cervical spine is presented. The mechanism of injury is discussed. A plea is made for routine radiographic examination of the cervical spines of all rugby players in order to detect the presence of vertebral fusion and other conditions which may predispose to spinal trauma.

From rugby to basketball: a comparative analysis on the implementation of mixed ability.

INTRODUCTION: People with disabilities continued to face numerous barriers to participation in mainstream sports clubs. In this regard, the Mixed Ability (MA) model emerged as a response to the limited availability of inclusive opportunities that enabled involvement in these contexts and, consequently, the exercise of individual rights. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyse the application of the MA model in basketball and to compare it with rugby, a discipline with a more consolidated trajectory in this field. Furthermore, it sought to assess how participation influenced the percept

Fourteen-year analysis of rugby injuries in a pediatric emergency department.

BACKGROUND: Rugby is the third most played contact team sport worldwide. Its growing popularity is raising concerns about injuries rates, given its collision-based nature and minimal use of protective gear. However, research on rugby injuries in Italy, especially in the pediatric age group, remains limited. METHODS: This retrospective study examined the visits of patients with rugby-related injuries presenting to a tertiary-care Pediatric Emergency Department (PED) in the Veneto region of Italy, which is the Italian region with the highest rate of youth rugby participation. RESULTS: The data

The epidemiology of head injuries at 2019 Rugby Union World Cup.

INTRODUCTION: The sequelae of concussion are of growing concern within Rugby. World Rugby has introduced rule changes to improve player welfare and reduce head injury frequency. We aimed to report the incidence of head injuries and head injury assessment (HIA) at the 2019 Rugby World Cup (RWC). METHODS: We reviewed all 45 tournament matches and recorded the number of head injuries, the injured player's position, and the mechanism of injury; whether the player had an HIA; and if they returned to play following injury. We compared these findings with previous RWCs. RESULTS: We recorded 68 head

A Qualitative Exploration of Parents' Perceptions of Risk in Youth Contact Rugby.

The purpose of this study was to explore the understandings and perceptions of risk related to brain trauma amongst parents of children that play contact rugby. A qualitative approach was taken, using semi-structured interviews with 7 mothers and 27 fathers of children that participate in contact rugby. A thematic analysis of data suggests that parents used two primary cognitive strategies to process the risk they consented to with their children's participation in rugby; (1) minimalizing rugby risk to be equivalent to less injurious sports; and (2) elevating physical and social advantages abo

Neck strength in Rugby Union players: a systematic review of the literature.

The incidence and severity of concussion injuries are increasing every year. Scientific evidence indicates that neck strength and girth could play a role in preventing head and neck injuries, or at least mitigating their severity. We aimed to examine the scientific literature addressing neck strength in Rugby Union with a focus on the potential role of neck strength on injury incidence, neck assessment protocols, neck strength measures, and neck strengthening exercises. We conducted a systematic search of the literature in January 2021 to locate published peer-reviewed articles from PubMed, SPO

Characteristics and factors of concussion events for tacklers in collegiate rugby union.

The purpose of this study was to determine the factors related to the occurrence of concussion in rugby tacklers. Match video records showing tackles leading to concussion were used to identify injury-inciting events. Additionally, noninjury tackles by concussed tacklers (prior to concussion) and position-matched tacklers from the same matches were used as a control cohort. All tackles were coded according to the tackling characteristics. The odds ratio (OR) was reported by logistic regression. The results demonstrated that a side step of the ball-carrier reduced the risk of concussion for tac

Sacral stress fracture in an amateur rugby player: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Sacral stress fracture is an uncommon cause of back pain. The majority of previously reported cases have been in runners. The purpose of this case report was to describe a case of sacral stress fracture in an amateur rugby player. CASE PRESENTATION: A healthy 18-year-old Japanese boy who was a rugby player presented with a 3-week history of lumbago. Sagittal and axial magnetic resonance imaging failed to reveal any reason for lumbago in his lumbar region. On his second presentation, 4 weeks later, his lumbago was so severe that he could not walk without a cane. A second magnetic r

Pyomyositis of the piriformis muscle presenting with sciatica in a teenage rugby player.

The authors report a rare case of piriformis pyomyositis, in a teenage rugby player, who was initially feverish and presented to us with low back pain, sciatica and inability to mobilise due to pain. Subsequent imaging investigations (MRI scan) revealed abscess formation in the piriformis muscle with compression effect on the ipsilateral sciatic nerve. A course of intravenous antibiotic therapy followed by oral antibiotics fully resolved his symptoms and returned inflammatory markers back to normal.

Use of a rugby helmet brace for postoperative treatment of muscular torticollis.

Prior to 1992, our postoperative management for congenital muscular torticollis consisted of either plaster cast immobilization or no immobilization, depending on the patient's age and the degree of contracture. However, some patients required further surgery and developed complications. In 1992, we produced rugby helmet braces for postoperative management. The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical results of the previous postoperative management with the results achieved using rugby helmet braces. Twenty-five children aged younger than 6 years underwent caudal partial resection of

External knee support in rugby union. Effectiveness of bracing and taping.

Rugby football is associated with a number of biomechanical stresses which are frequently associated with knee injury. Consequently, there has been a significant interest within the game regarding the techniques of knee surgery and accelerated rehabilitation and the prophylactic use of external knee support. Knee bracing and strapping techniques are widely practised by rugby players but their results vary and there are mixed opinions over their usefulness. This article discusses the current trends in external knee support, draws on the experiences of other professional football codes and extra

Differences in the incidence of injury between rugby league forwards and backs.

Evidence with regard to the incidence of injury to forwards and backs in the game of rugby league is extremely limited. A four year prospective study of all the injuries from one professional Rugby League club was conducted. All injuries that were received during match play were recorded, and those for forwards and backs compared. Forwards had a higher overall rates of injury than backs (139.4 [124.2-154.6] vs. 92.7 [80.9-104.6] per 1000 player hours, P < 0.00006). Forwards had a higher rate of injuries to all body sites with the exception of the ankle and the 'others' category of injury. They

Active elite rugby participation is associated with altered precentral cortical thickness.

There is growing concern that elite rugby participation may negatively influence brain health, but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. Cortical thickness is a widely applied biomarker of grey matter structure, but there is limited research into how it may be altered in active professional rugby players. Cross-sectional MRI data from 44 active elite rugby players, including 21 assessed within 1 week of head injury, and 47 healthy controls were analysed. We investigated how active elite rugby participation with and without sub-acute traumatic brain injury influenced grey matter structure usin
