[Behavior of the trace elements copper, zinc and manganese in bovine rumen. 1. Trace element content of different fractions of rumen fluid and the effect of copper sulfate administration].

Two adult, rumen-fistulated steers were fed, over four consecutive 3-week periods, Cu-deficient and normal hays with and without copper sulphate supplementation. Their rumen liquor levels of copper, zinc and manganese were determined correspondingly. The rumen liquor samples were split into 3 fractions by way of centrifugation, sodium dodecyl sulphate treatment of the sediment and filtration. The fractionation of the rumen liquor showed copper to be contained mainly in the water-soluble supernatant (68%), whilst zinc and manganese are more strongly linked to the microbial fraction (57 and 46%,

Maternal chromium supplementation increases lamb weaning weight and modulates rumen microbiota.

Maternal nutrition during gestation can program offspring development and may influence the establishment of the rumen microbiome, with implications for growth and rumen health. However, the effects of maternal chromium (Cr) supplementation on offspring rumen microbial communities and performance in sheep remain poorly characterised. This study investigated the effects of maternal Cr supplementation during late gestation and early lactation on the offspring microbiome and performance in lambs. Fifteen pregnant ewes were assigned to two treatments in a randomised design: no Cr supplementation a

Intracellular accumulation of hydrophobic 1,3-PDN inhibits methanogenesis in rumen methanogens.

Methane (CH4) from ruminants is a major source of agricultural greenhouse gas and represents a loss of dietary energy. 3-Nitrooxypropanol (3-NOP) is a known methanogenesis inhibitor, but its hydrophilic nature may limit the cellular accessibility to methanogens. Here, we systematically evaluated 1,3-propanediol dinitrate (1,3-PDN), a more hydrophobic derivative of 3-NOP, for its antimethanogenic potential and underlying mode of action using ruminal fermentation, pure-culture assays, multi-omics analyses, and molecular docking. Intracellular accumulation assays indicated greater cellular accumu

Bioprocessing of mixed oil palm by-products with single and consortium white-rot fungi: Effects on nutritional quality, in vitro rumen fermentation, methane production, and rumen microbial populations.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Oil palm by-products are abundant lignocellulosic resources with considerable potential as sustainable ruminant feed but are constrained by poor digestibility and limited rumen fermentability. White-rot fungi (WRF) produce ligninolytic enzymes capable of modifying lignocellulosic biomass, whereas fungal consortia may enhance substrate bioconversion through complementary enzymatic activities. This study evaluated the effects of single and consortium WRF on the nutritional quality, in vitro rumen fermentation, digestibility, methane (CH4) production, and rumen microbial popul

Influence of Dietary Rumen-Protected Choline and Nicotinic Acid Supplementation on Growth Outcomes and Meat Tenderness, Rumen Microbial Composition, and Serum Metabolomics of Late-Fattening Beef Cattle.

High-concentrate feeding during late fattening can impair metabolic health and meat quality in beef cattle, yet effective nutritional strategies remain limited. Choline and nicotinic acid are involved in lipid and energy metabolism, but information on their combined or sequential supplementation is scarce. This study evaluated rumen-protected choline given alone or together with nicotinic acid on growth performance, meat quality, serum biochemical indices, serum metabolomics, and free amino acid profiles in late-fattening beef cattle. Twenty-four black cattle were randomly allocated to three g

Rumen unprotected glucose tends to promote intramuscular fat deposition via microbial volatile fatty acid-mediated metabolic reprogramming in cattle: a multi-omics perspective through the rumen-jejunum axis.

BACKGROUND: The regulatory effects of glucose absorption at different sites (rumen vs. small intestine) on lipid metabolism exhibit significant variation in beef nutrition. This study aimed to investigate the regulatory pathways of rumen-protected or unprotected glucose on lipid metabolism through the rumen-jejunum axis in Xinjiang Brown cattle. RESULTS: Thirty Xinjiang Brown cattle (females) with similar initial weight (410 ± 22.4 kg) were randomly assigned to 3 treatment groups (n = 10 animals per group). The experimental groups were fed a basal diet with the following daily supplements per

Rumen-host crosstalk: an amplifier of systemic pathology in heat-stressed ruminants.

Heat stress (HS) is a primary environmental constraint threatening ruminant production, welfare and reproductive efficiency amid global warming. Current studies mostly focus on either systemic physiological damage or local ruminal dysfunction separately, while the bidirectional crosstalk between the rumen and host, as well as its amplifying effect on systemic pathology, remains to be systematically elucidated. This review integrates the latest evidence to construct a mechanistic framework centered on the neuro-endocrine-immune network, which acts as the core hub mediating rumen-host interactio

Effects of Yeast Culture on Lamb Growth Performance, Rumen Microbiota, and Metabolites.

The effects of incorporating yeast culture (YC) into pelleted feeds on sheep production and the potential impact on rumen microbial populations, microbial metabolism, and fermentation have not been extensively studied. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of YC on growth performance, rumen tissue development, rumen fermentation, and rumen microflora in sheep and to explore the potential microbial mechanisms involved. Fifty healthy 3-month-old male lambs of small-tailed Han sheep, with an average weight of 28.44 ± 0.63 kg, were randomly divided into five groups: control (0% YC), 3% YC, 6% YC

The effects of different silage types on rumen bacteria and metabolites in Tibetan sheep.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between two different types of silage (saline; SQ and non-saline; NSQ) and rumen metabolism in Tibetan sheep. RESULTS: It was found that sheep in the saline silage (SQ group) exhibited superior apparent quality (e.g., crude protein, crude fat, DM, crude polysaccharide, polyphenols, and flavonoid), secondary metabolite profiles (e.g., Proline, Leucine, Alanine, Pyruvate), and fermentation microbial populations (e.g., Firmicutes, Bacteroidota, and Lactobacillus) compared to the non-saline (NSQ) silage group. However, the hi

Essential Oils in Nellore Beef Cattle: In Vivo Impact on Rumen Emissions.

Essential oils (EOs), as rumen additives, decreased CH4 emissions in in vitro trials but results from in vivo studies are still limited. We investigated the effects of Origanum vulgare (OEO) and Thymus vulgaris (TEO) EOs on in vivo methane emissions from Nellore beef cattle. Six adult rumen-cannulated Nellore cattle were used in a double 3 × 3 Latin square design. Treatments consisted of three diets containing either 3 mL OEO per kg of concentrate, 3 mL TEO/kg of concentrate, or no EO addition. The experimental period consisted of three 21 d feeding periods and methane production was measured

Effect of acidosis in the late-finishing phase on rumen fermentation in feedlot steers.

The objective was to determine the effects of induced acidosis in the late-finishing phase on rumen fermentation in feedlot steers. Eleven ruminally cannulated steers (body weight [BW] = 795 kg ± 54) were blocked into two groups based on initial BW. For 195 d prior to the start of the study, cattle were consuming a basal finishing diet (60% dry-rolled corn, 15% modified distillers grains, 15% corn silage, and 10% ground corn-based supplement). Steers were randomly assigned to one of the two treatments: control (CON), or induced acidosis (ACD). Both treatments were fasted for 24 h then fed the

The isolation of rumen enterococci strains along with high potential utilizing cyanide.

Cyanogenic glycosides in forage species and the possibility of cyanide (CN) poisoning can have undesirable effects on ruminants. The literature estimates that unknown rumen bacteria with rhodanese activity are key factors in the animal detoxification of cyanogenic glycosides, as they are capable of transforming CN into the less toxic thiocyanate. Therefore, identifying these bacteria will enhance our understanding of how to improve animal health with this natural CN detoxification process. In this study, a rhodanese activity screening assay revealed 6 of 44 candidate rumen bacterial strains is

Nasoruminal endoscopy of the rumen and reticulum in buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) - a preliminary study.

Twenty apparently healthy buffaloes were withdrawn of feed and water for 48 hours. Buffaloes were administered with fluids and were subjected to endoscopy every 12 hours. Olympus™ [GIF V70] flexible video endoscope was passed through the ventral nasal meatus, the pharynx, oesophagus and then into the reticulo-rumen in physically restrained buffaloes. The entire reticulum and part of the rumen could be visualized, when the animals were off feed and water for at least 48 hours and evacuations of rumen contents were done even after 48 hours of starvation to visualize the rumen in six buffaloes. DNA barcoding of rumen flukes (Paramphistomidae) from bovines in Germany and Austria.

Rumen flukes have received growing veterinary attention in western and central Europe during the past two decades because of an increase in prevalence of infection in cattle and sheep, including cases of severe clinical disease. Historically, rumen fluke infections in Europe were assumed to be caused mainly by Paramphistomum cervi (or species, which were later considered to be synonymous with P. cervi), but more recently molecular studies demonstrated Calicophoron daubneyi to be the predominating species. For the present investigation, adult rumen flukes isolated from 23 cattle originating fro

Epidemiological investigation of a severe rumen fluke outbreak on an Irish dairy farm.

Although the rumen fluke, Calicophoron daubneyi is now very common and widespread throughout Western Europe, reports of clinical cases are still rare. This study explores the epidemiological background to a severe rumen fluke outbreak in 6-month-old heifers on a dairy farm in Ireland. Sequence analysis of the cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (Cox1) gene of the rumen fluke metacercariae on pasture failed to identify predominant, possibly pathogenic subtypes. However, estimates of metacercarial load indicated that the animals were exposed to a daily dose of about 5334 C. daubneyi metacercariae for a

Comparison of maturation of drug-metabolizing enzymes in calves with functioning or nonfunctioning rumen.

Drug-metabolizing enzyme activities were measured in livers from calves fed commercial milk replacer (nonfunctioning rumen [veal]), and those fed milk replacer supplemented with whole grain and hay from the first week of age (functioning rumen [ruminating calves]). After birth, cytochrome P450 and its NADPH-dependent reductase activities remained unchanged in veal calves; in ruminating calves they increased almost 50%. Cytochrome P450-mediated reactions, such as aniline hydroxylase activity, tripled in ruminating calves, but remained unchanged in veal calves. In both groups of calves, coumarin
