Management of Urologic Conditions in Small Ruminants.

Small ruminants frequently experience urologic conditions, such as obstructive urolithiasis, posthitis, vulvitis, and urinary tract infections. Urologic conditions are more common in male small ruminants, especially castrated males, primarily due to their anatomy. Traditionally, urologic conditions warranted culling from the herd without significant efforts in treatment. However, more goats and sheep are now being kept as pets. Small ruminant owners have strong emotional attachments to their animals and are more likely to seek treatment of medical disorders, including urologic conditions. Surg

Brainstem and Cranial Nerve Disorders of Ruminants.

Asymmetrical signs of brainstem disease occur relatively infrequently in ruminants. The most common differential diagnoses include listeriosis, otitis media/interna, and pituitary abscess syndrome. Although these conditions produce signs of brainstem dysfunction, the diseases can usually be differentiated based on historical findings and subtle clinical differences. Basic laboratory diagnostic tests are often not specific in the definitive diagnosis but may be supportive. Advanced imaging techniques have proven to be useful in the diagnosis of otitis media/interna. Presumptive clinical diagnos

[EHEC carriage in ruminants and probiotic effects].

Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) are Shiga-Toxin producing E. coli (STEC) that cause human outbreaks which can lead to a severe illness such as haemolytic-uraemic syndrome (HUS), particularly in young children. The gastrointestinal tract of cattle and other ruminants is the principal reservoir of EHEC strains and outbreaks have been associated with direct contact with the farm environment, and with the consumption of meat, dairy products, water and fruit or vegetable contaminated with ruminant manure. Several outbreaks occurred these last years in France. In Brazil, although STEC car

Hormonal control of reproduction in small ruminants.

Reproduction of small ruminants can be controlled by several methods developed in recent decades. Some of these involve administration of hormones that modify the physiological chain of events involved in the sexual cycle. Methods which utilise progesterone or its analogues are based on their effects in the luteal phase of the cycle, simulating the action of natural progesterone produced by the corpus luteum after ovulation, which is responsible for controlling LH secretion from the pituitary. Use of prostaglandins is an alternative method for controlling reproduction by eliminating the corpus

Chemical restraint and injectable anesthesia of ruminants.

The ketamine stun technique provides enhanced patient cooperation when compared with more traditional injectable chemical restraint cocktails. Depending on the dose and route of administration, the ketamine stun also provides a variable degree of systemic analgesia. The ketamine stun technique has been shown to reduce the stress response to castration and dehorning in calves. Anesthesia should be considered for procedures requiring an extended period of immobility or a high level of systemic analgesia. Constant rate infusion techniques, such as double drip or ruminant triple drip, provide a mo

Atypical transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) in ruminants.

Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) are associated with the accumulation in infected tissues of a disease-associated form of a host-encoded protein, the prion protein (PrP). Contrary to the normal form of the protein, this form of PrP is partially resistant to protease digestion (PrP(res)). Detailed characterisation of PrP(res) has been intensively investigated in recent years to try and decipher the diversity of TSEs in human and animals. This considerably and unexpectedly enlarged our knowledge about such diseases in ruminants. Previously, such a diversity was essentially shown

Peste des petits ruminants in Ethiopian goats.

An outbreak of disease characterised by fever, ocular and nasal discharge, coughing and sneezing, oral necrosis, diarrhoea, enteritis and pneumonia in goats was shown by the use of specific cDNA probes to have been peste des petits ruminants, confirmed for the first time in Ethiopia. Both morbidity and mortality rates were high in goats but sheep were not affected.

Surgical management of urolithiasis in small ruminants.

Twenty-one cases of urolithiasis in small ruminants were examined to evaluate the efficacy of various surgical treatments. Of 21 cases, all but 1 had multiple calculi. Urethral process amputation and medical therapy either did not relieve the obstruction or provided only temporary relief (< 36 hours) in 14 of 16 cases. In 2 cases, obstruction recurred in 1 year and 4 years, respectively, after urethral process amputation. Ten of 13 animals that had perineal urethrostomy (PU) experienced short-term complications, including postoperative hemorrhage, dehiscence of the surgical wound, and subcutan

Pestivirus infections in ruminants other than cattle.

Pestiviruses infect a wide range of domestic, captive and free-living ruminants. Among domestic livestock, Border disease virus is a well recognised cause of an important congenital disease of sheep in virtually all sheep-rearing countries of the world. The clinical signs, pathogenesis, diagnosis, epidemiology and control of this disease are described in detail. One natural outbreak of Border disease in domestic goats has been described and there is serological and virological evidence that pestiviruses occur widely in this species. A pestivirus has been isolated from a farmed red deer (Cervus

Calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium homeostasis in ruminants.

Significant advances have been made in the last 30 years in the understanding of Ca, PO4, and Mg homeostasis in ruminants. Despite these advances, the primary cellular or molecular lesions responsible for failure of homeostasis have yet to be identified. Suggested causes, such as primary hormone deficiencies, have been eliminated, and we now believe that aging and nutrition can reduce the ability of intestine, bone, and kidney to respond rapidly to the hormone signals responsible for homeostasis during rapid increases in demand for these minerals. Further research is required before these lesi

Endocrine regulation of energy metabolism in ruminants.

Partitioning of nutrients among tissues of the body is one role of the endocrine system. Skeletal muscle, adipose tissue, and lactating mammary gland are tissues that utilize most of the energy consumed in excess of maintenance. The energy metabolism of ruminants is complicated by the lack of absorption of glucose because of the fermentation of carbohydrates in the rumen. Increased secretion of glucagon after feeding promotes hepatic gluconeogenesis from absorbed amino acids. During fasting, gluconeogenesis is maintained by increased secretion of glucocorticoids. Based on observation form a nu

The role of rumination and positive beliefs about rumination in eating pathology.

PURPOSE: General and eating disorder (ED)-specific ruminations have been identified as key factors that may contribute to eating pathology. Positive beliefs about rumination (e.g., "Ruminating helps me to prevent future mistakes") may impact this association. However, the effect of positive beliefs about rumination on the links between rumination and ED symptom severity has not been investigated. This study sought to clarify relations between rumination and ED symptom severity and to evaluate the potential moderating effect of positive beliefs about rumination on these associations. METHODS:

Rumination as a Transdiagnostic Phenomenon in the 21st Century: The Flow Model of Rumination.

Rumination and its related mental phenomena share associated impairments in cognition, such as executive functions and attentional processes across different clinical conditions (e.g., in psychotic disorders). In recent decades, however, the notion of rumination has been increasingly narrowed to the "self-focused" type in depressive disorders. A closer review of the literature shows that rumination may be construed as a broader process characterized by repetitive thoughts about certain mental contents that interfere with one's daily activities, not only limited to those related to "self". The Relationship between Adolescent Rumination and Maternal Rumination, Criticism and Positivity.

BACKGROUND: Rumination predicts depression in adults and adolescents. The development of rumination has been linked to parenting practices, but only limited research has investigated this and research has tended to rely on self-report parenting measures. AIMS: To investigate the relationship between female adolescent rumination and maternal modelling, criticism and positivity using an observational measure of parental behaviour. METHOD: A cross-sectional design was used. Daughters aged 16-18 years and their mothers (n = 154 dyads) completed questionnaire measures of rumination and affect. Mo

Comparison of ruminative responses with negative rumination as a vulnerability factor for depression.

Several studies have shown that the ruminative responses, which are defined as a coping pattern that focuses on the symptoms of depression and on the possible causes and consequences of these symptoms, are associated with depression. Recently, negative rumination, which is defined as the tendency to continue to think about something bad, harmful, or unhopeful for a long time, has been proposed as a vulnerability factor for depression. The purpose of this study was to compare depression scores associated with negative rumination and ruminative responses. We expected to find depression associate
