Career aspirations, job satisfaction and gender identity in female student nurses.

This study examines the gender-role orientation, gender-role conflict, job commitment and work motivation of female student nurses in the Republic of Ireland. Career aspirations, year of nurse training and geographical area of upbringing were examined as potential concomitants of these dependent measures. Subjects completed self-report measures of job involvement, work motivation, gender-role orientation and gender-role conflict. Results obtained showed that aspiring towards a traditionally female career area of nursing was associated with higher levels of work motivation and lower levels of g

Nurses' perceptions of mental healthcare in primary-care settings in Kenya.

Kenya maintains an extraordinary treatment gap for mental health services because the need for and availability of mental health services are extraordinarily misaligned. One way to narrow the treatment gap is task-sharing, where specialists rationally distribute tasks across the health system, with many responsibilities falling upon frontline health workers, including nurses. Yet, little is known about how nurses perceive task-sharing mental health services. This article investigates nurses' perceptions of mental healthcare delivery within primary-care settings in Kenya. We conducted a cross-s

Pediculosis capitis among schoolchildren in urban and rural areas of eastern Poland.

The objective of this study was to compare the prevalence of head pediculosis in the rural and urban environments of Lublin Province (eastern Poland) in 1996-2000 and to examine socioeconomic factors influencing distribution among schoolchildren. A total of 95,153 schoolchildren living in urban and rural areas were examined twice yearly by school nurses. Patients' perceptions of male and female nursing interns in Guangdong and Guangxi, Southern China: The interplay of gender stereotypes, patient satisfaction, and willingness to receive care.

Nursing remains female-dominated globally, with gender stereotypes hindering workforce diversity. Male nurses account for 2% to 5% of China's nursing workforce, and Guangdong/Guangxi lack studies on patients' perceptions of male nursing interns. This study aims to explore relationships between gender stereotypes, patient satisfaction, and willingness to receive care from male/female nursing interns in Guangdong/Guangxi and identify influencing factors. In this study, a multicenter cross-sectional survey (Mar-Jun 2025) enrolled 460 inpatients from 4 tertiary hospitals (2 each in Guangdong/Guang

Striving for Equity, Justice, and Access to Palliative Care Through Cancer and Palliative Nursing in Uganda: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Uganda is recognized as a leader in palliative care in Africa, with advances such as health system integration and nurse prescribing of oral morphine. However, inequities in access to quality cancer palliative care persist, particularly for rural, socioeconomically marginalized, and pediatric populations. Nurses play a central role in service delivery, yet their contributions and challenges have not been synthesized through an equity and justice lens. OBJECTIVE: To examine the development of palliative care in Uganda and the role of cancer and palliative nursing in advancing equit

Utilization of an Urban Syringe Service Program: Implications for Rural Pennsylvania.

BACKGROUND: Syringe service programs (SSPs) provide health-promoting and preventative care for people who use drugs (PWUDs) and can reduce the risk of overdose and infectious diseases. SSPs are predominantly located in urban areas. PURPOSE: This study aims to (1) assess the number of syringes distributed and the services utilized at an SSP in Pennsylvania, and (2) assess the number of participants traveling to the SSP from other counties, and the rurality of each county. METHODS: A convenience sample of individuals utilizing SSP services over 2 years was used. Data collected at the visits we

Developing effective policy strategies to retain health workers in rural Bangladesh: a policy analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Retention of human resources for health (HRH), particularly physicians and nurses in rural and remote areas, is a major problem in Bangladesh. We reviewed relevant policies and provisions in relation to HRH aiming to develop appropriate rural retention strategies in Bangladesh. METHODS: We conducted a document review, thorough search and review of relevant literature published from 1971 through May 2013, key informant interviews with policy elites (health policy makers, managers, researchers, etc.), and a roundtable discussion with key stakeholders and policy makers. We used the

Facilitators and Barriers to Care in Rural Emergency Departments in Alberta for Patients on Peritoneal Dialysis (PD): An Interpretive Descriptive Study.

BACKGROUND: Home dialysis offers many advantages to patients, but they require support to manage a home-based therapy such as peritoneal dialysis (PD). A rural emergency department provides an important safety net for patients requiring medical care, including managing complications of PD, such as peritonitis. Patients living in northern Alberta are spread out geographically and can be far from a PD training center, yet anecdotally, many rural sites do not provide care for these patients. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to identify the facilitators and barriers to nursing care in rural emergency depar

Characteristics of risk in patients of nurse practitioner safety net practices.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to describe the characteristics of vulnerability in patients at safety net practices where nurse practitioners (NPs) provide the majority of the health care and to discuss the implications regarding patient data collection for all NPs who provide safety net care. DATA SOURCES: Data were collected from patients at four safety net practices: a rural health clinic, a rural nurse-managed health clinic, an urban nurse-managed health clinic, and an urban Indian health clinic. CONCLUSIONS: The users of these practices reflected a significant degree of risk fo

"Embracing the present and fearing the future": the meaning of being an oldest old woman in a rural area.

In Western countries, the number of older people receiving home nursing care is increasing, and in rural areas they are at additional risk because of the distance between people and health care facilities. The aim of this study was therefore to illuminate the meaning of being an oldest old woman living alone in a rural area and receiving home nursing care. A sample of 11 oldest old women living in rural areas in the middle of Norway was chosen for this study. Narrative interviews were conducted, and the data were analyzed using the phenomenological hermeneutic method. After a naïve reading and

Provision of comprehensive perinatal services through rural outreach: a model program.

A university-based program of perinatal care was extended to serve a spectrum of underserved populations through both urban and rural outreach. The program centered on the use of a multidisciplinary health care team comprised of a physician, nurse-midwife, health educator, social worker, nutritionist, pediatric nurse-practitioner, and patient case manager for health service delivery. It emphasized a decentralized service model with central referral and management of high-risk problems. The program has become a model for perinatal access and is reflected in current state legislation. The implem

Barriers to healing pressure ulcers within the community setting: a service evaluation.

To effectively support patients with wounds in the community, healthcare teams must adopt diverse and tailored approaches to care. Patients with pressure ulcers require a detailed assessment of all the factors which may cause pressure ulcers or delay healing. This assessment should be performed by specialists as evidence-based guidelines recommend this approach to achieve the best outcomes. This service evaluation explores some of the complexities of achieving this for a rural community nursing trust. A case study has been used for a patient with multi-morbidities and spina bifida within a rur

Rural and remote Indigenous communities face unique challenges, and they must drive solutions for sustaining and maintaining distinct nursing practices. Resourcing Indigenous community needs and aspirations for health depends on sustainable funding and an appropriately resourced nursing workforce. An Indigenous community-engaged research team led a program of study exploring Indigenous systems of care with three distinct communities. We used Indigenous research methodologies to identify obstacles to care and ways to advance nursing and healthcare delivery according to unique values and demogra
