The goal of this study was to explore the latency of eye movements both in direction and in depth in dyslexic children. Sixteen dyslexic (mean age: 11.12 +/- 1.08 years) and 14 non-dyslexic children (mean age: 12.08 +/- 0.99 years) were tested. Two different paradigms (simultaneous and gap) were used to elicit pure saccades at far and at near distance, pure vergence (convergence and divergence) and combined saccade-vergence movements. Horizontal eye movements from both eyes were recorded simultaneously by a photoelectric device (Oculometer, Dr. Bouis). The mean latency of saccades at far dista

To guide saccades accurately human adult subjects learn rapidly to aim, in advance, for the central position of the distribution of the target positions studied. This causes a bias called range effect, i.e., saccades to the central location are accurate while the less eccentric locations are overshot and the more eccentric locations are undershot. It is believed that this is a cognitive strategy allowing to reduce overall variability. We show here that the same exists for normal children (5-13 years old). Most importantly, from the age of 5 years, children with strabismus use the same cognitiv

Visual exploration is organized in sequences of saccadic eye movements that depend on both perceptual and cognitive context. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we studied the neural basis of sequential oculomotor behavior and its dependence on different types of memory by analyzing cerebral activity during performance of newly learned and familiar sequences of eye movements. Compared to a resting condition, both types of sequences activated a common fronto-parietal network, including frontal and supplementary eye fields, and several parietal areas. Within this network, newly learned

Birds exhibit remarkable vision despite lacking the classical retinal vasculature, raising an enigmatic question about how avascular retinas fulfill energy demands necessary for sight. Avian saccades couple rapid gaze shifts with cyclotorsional oscillations. In pigeons, we show that these saccades orchestrate intraocular metabolic dynamics and visual processing. Using combined measurements of eye movements, intraocular glucose, and neuronal activity in retinorecipient brain regions, we found that saccades induce intraocular glucose fluctuations that are closely linked to changes in visual resp

A new study has found that, in primates with highly specialized visual systems, a corollary discharge of motor commands to make exploratory saccades arises in the midbrain, propagates to the thalamus, and then reaches hippocampal circuits in the depths of the temporal lobe where it shapes the making of memories.

BACKGROUND: It is important to understand the pathophysiology of ocular myasthenia gravis (OMG) to improve treatment.
AIM: To use modern video-oculography to characterise saccadic eye movements in patients with OMG, including anti-AChR, anti-MuSK, anti-LRP4, and seronegative OMG.
METHODS: In total, 21 patients with OMG and five age-matched healthy control subjects underwent video-oculography. Participants performed a sequence of horizontal saccades (3 minutes each) at ±5°, ± 10°, and ±20°, followed by 3 minutes of saccades directed at randomly presented targets at ±5°, ± 10°, and ±15°. Small fixational eye-movements are a fundamental aspect of vision and thought to reflect fine shifts in covert attention during active viewing. While the perceptual benefits of these small eye movements have been demonstrated during a wide range of experimental tasks including during free viewing, their function during reading remains surprisingly unclear. Previous research demonstrated that readers with increased microsaccade rates displayed longer reading speeds. To what extent increased fixational eye movements are, however, specific to reading and might be indicative of reading skill defic

Moving objects are often occluded behind larger, stationary objects, but we can easily predict when and where they reappear. Here, we show that the prediction of object reappearance is subject to adaptive learning. When monkeys generated predictive saccades to the location of target reappearance, systematic changes in the location or timing of target reappearance independently altered the endpoint or latency of the saccades. Furthermore, spatial adaptation of predictive saccades did not alter visually triggered reactive saccades, whereas adaptation of reactive saccades altered the metrics of p

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) has been explored as a target to treat axial motor symptoms of advanced Parkinson disease (PD). The aim of this study was to consider relative effects of bilateral subthalamic nucleus (STN) and PPN DBS on both initiation and inhibition of saccades in advanced PD.
METHODS: Five patients with advanced PD performed 2 different oculomotor tasks off stimulation, with bilateral STN DBS, with bilateral PPN DBS, and with simultaneous bilateral STN and PPN DBS. The first task involved visually guided saccades, and the secon

The mechanism of perverted vertical responses during horizontal head impulse tests (HITs) requires further elucidation. A 47-year-old woman with a Chiari malformation showed alternating skew deviation, downbeat nystagmus with an increasing slow phase velocity, impaired smooth pursuit, and upward ocular deviation during horizontal HITs and corrective downward saccades in the presence of normal bithermal caloric tests and intact tilt suppressions of the post-rotatory nystagmus. These findings suggest dysfunction of the inferior cerebellum including the tonsil, nodulus, and uvula. We propose that

The premotor theory of attention postulates that spatial attention arises from the activation of saccade areas and that the deployment of attention is the consequence of motor programming. Yet attentional and oculomotor processes have been shown to be dissociable at the neuronal level in covert attention tasks. To investigate a potential dissociation at the behavioral level, we instructed human participants to move their eyes (saccade) towards 1 of 2 nearby, competing saccade targets. The spatial distribution of visual attention was determined using oriented visual stimuli presented either at

Infantile strabismus is a common disorder characterized by a chronic misalignment of the eyes, impairment of binocular vision, and oculomotor abnormalities. Nonhuman primates with strabismus, induced in infancy, show a pattern of abnormalities similar to those of strabismic children. This allows strabismic nonhuman primates to serve as an ideal animal model to examine neural mechanisms associated with aberrant oculomotor behavior. Here, we test the hypothesis that impairment of disparity vergence and horizontal saccade disconjugacy in exotropia and esotropia are associated with disrupted tunin

Saccades in the frontoparallel plane are targeted at two-dimensional (2D) locations, defined by direction and amplitude. Macaque neurophysiology has shown that these dimensions are jointly represented in single intraparietal sulcus (IPS) and frontal eye fields (FEF) neurons, constituting multiple maps of 2D saccade space. Human fMRI has shown that the direction of the saccade is topographically represented across large neuronal groups. However, it is unknown whether both direction and amplitude are separable dimensions at the voxel level and whether these tuning variables are organized in larg

BACKGROUND: Huntington disease (HD) is a genetic, neurodegenerative disorder characterized by chorea, behavioral co-morbidities, cognitive deficits, and eye movement abnormalities. We sought to evaluate whether reflexive and voluntary orienting prove useful as biomarkers of disease severity in HD.
METHODS: Eleven HD subjects were evaluated with the motor subscale of the Unified Huntington Disease Rating Scale (UHDRS) and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment. Using an infrared eye tracker, we also measured latency and error rates of horizontal and vertical saccades using prosaccade and antisaccad

BACKGROUND: Ocular motor abnormalities play an important role in differential diagnoses of Pick complex diseases.
OBJECTIVES: We evaluated how frequently supranuclear vertical saccadic impairment was observed in patients with frontotemporal dementia with motor neuron disease (FTD-MND). In addition, we tried to characterize their vertical saccadic abnormalities.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven patients with FTD-MND were recruited. Supranuclear vertical saccadic impairment on gross examination was defined as slow saccades with or without reduction in the final amplitude of the movement accompani

The changes in the cerebellar activation pattern of two successive fMRI scanning runs were determined for visually guided to-and-fro saccades in 12 healthy volunteers familiar with the study paradigm. Group and single subject-analyses revealed a constant activation of the paramedian cerebellar vermis (uvula, tonsils, tuber, folium/declive), which reflects constant ocular motor activity in both runs. A significant decrease in activation of the cerebellar hemispheres found in the second run is best explained by either a decrease in attention or the effects of motor optimization and learning. The

The purpose of this investigation was to describe the neural constraints on three-dimensional (3-D) orientations of the eye in space (Es), head in space (Hs), and eye in head (Eh) during visual fixations in the monkey and the control strategies used to implement these constraints during head-free gaze saccades. Dual scleral search coil signals were used to compute 3-D orientation quaternions, two-dimensional (2-D) direction vectors, and 3-D angular velocity vectors for both the eye and head in three monkeys during the following visual tasks: radial to/from center, repetitive horizontal, nonrep

Cerebral blood flow studies in humans suggest that the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) could be involved in eye movement control. In two patients with a small infarction affecting the posterior part of this area (on the right side) and in ten control subjects, we studied several paradigms of saccadic eye movements: gap task, overlap task, antisaccades (using either a 5 degrees or 25 degrees lateral target), memory-guided saccades with a short (1 s) or long (7 s) delay, and sequences of memory-guided saccades. Compared with controls, patients had normal latency in the gap task but increased lat

When a visually guided saccade task is running, the presaccadic potential obtained in the initial period of the task differs from those obtained later, while the subject's oculomotor performance remains unaffected. These time-related changes of cortical activity consist both of an overall decreasing electrical activity as well as a selective one over certain cortical areas. The generalised reduced activity already described in earlier studies is considered as an unspecified effect such as fatigue or decreased motivation. On the contrary, the pronounced selective changes of cortical activity ob

We studied horizontal saccades by direct-current electro-oculography in 18 patients with internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO), and in 16 healthy, age-matched subjects. The occurrence of abducting signs, i.e. overshoot and dissociated nystagmus, was related to an increase of interocular dissociation (measured by the ratio of abduction and adduction peak velocities). The amplitude of abduction hypermetria was strongly correlated with the intensity of adduction slowing. These findings support the idea of an adaptive mechanism underlying the overshoot and nystagmus of abduction saccades in INO.
