'A sad inheritance of misery': the cultural life of hereditary scrofula in eighteenth-century England.

This essay argues that scrofula was one of several disorders, including gout, rickets, and venereal disease, that were 'rebranded' as hereditary in response to broader cultural changes that took place during the Restoration and eighteenth century in England. While the purposes of scrofula's recategorisation were more political than medical, they resulted in this heretofore relatively obscure childhood ailment assuming a new prominence within both medical and popular discourses of the period. Scrofula became both emblem and proof of the links between sexual promiscuity, financial profligacy, an

fMRI Response of Parietal Brain Areas to Sad Facial Stimuli in Mild Depression.

fMRI markers of mild depression were revealed using standard emotional test. Patients with mild depression and healthy volunteers were asked to determine gender of subjects in photographs with different emotional expressions (neutral, surprise, disgust, confusion, anger, sadness, fear, and joy). The pattern of response to different emotions was universal in both groups and included the largest clusters in the occipital region, as well as a certain volume in the parietal lobes and posterior lateral frontal cortex. In depression group, a lack of activation in the middle cingulate gyrus (bilatera

Implementing the K-SADS-PL as a standard diagnostic tool: Effects on clinical diagnoses.

Diagnostic interviews are valuable tools for generating reliable and valid psychiatric diagnoses. However, little is known about the diagnostic effects of implementing such an interview into the standard diagnostic procedure of a child psychiatric clinic. Therefore, we reviewed discharge diagnoses of psychiatric patients (age: 8-12 years; combined sample of inpatients and day hospital patients) over two intervals before and after implementing the semi-structured diagnostic interview K-SADS-PL as a diagnostic tool during intake. Each interval was a two year period spanning from 2009-2010 (pre s

Increased involvement of the parahippocampal gyri in a sad mood predicts future depressive symptoms.

Behavioral studies suggest a relationship between autobiographical memory, rumination and depression. The objective of this study was to determine whether remitted depressed patients show alterations in connectivity of the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC, a node in the default mode network) with the parahippocampal gyri (PHG, a region associated with autobiographical memory) while intensively recalling negative memories and whether this is related to daily life symptoms and to the further course of depression. Sad mood was induced with keywords of personal negative life events in participants

Childhood trauma history differentiates amygdala response to sad faces within MDD.

OBJECTIVE: Heightened amygdala reactivity to aversive stimuli in major depression is regarded as a core feature of the underlying physiology but individual differences in amygdala response may also arise secondary to persistent changes in limbic function during early neurodevelopment relative to stressors such as childhood trauma. We sought to determine whether heightened amygdala response is a core feature of depression or a general risk factor for psychopathology secondary to early life stress. METHOD: Twenty unipolar depressed patients with and without a history of significant early life t

The Kiddie-SADS allows a dimensional assessment of externalizing symptoms in ADHD children and adolescents.

Objective of the study was the investigation of the psychometric properties of a scale derived from the Kiddie-SADS used for a dimensional assessment of externalizing symptoms in children and adolescents. The scale consists of 26 DSM-IV Kiddie-SADS items for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD, 18 items) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD, 8 items). Patients and their mothers were interviewed separately on the patients' symptoms during the last 2 weeks prior to interview. An ADHD-ODD sum score ranging between 0 and 26 was computed reflecting the number of fulfilled diagnostic cr

Anodal Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation over the Cerebellum Enhances Sadness Recognition in Parkinson's Disease Patients: a Pilot Study.

Emotional processing impairments, resulting in a difficulty to decode emotions from faces especially for negative emotions, are characteristic non-motor features of Parkinson's disease (PD). There is limited evidence about the specific contribution of the cerebellum to the recognition of emotional contents in facial expressions even though patients with cerebellar dysfunction often lose this ability. In this study, we aimed to evaluate whether the recognition of facial expressions can be modulated by cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in PD patients. Nine PD patients wer

Encephalon Mri in 4-12 Years Old Children: How Pain, Fear and Sadness Regulation Affect MRI Image Quality.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging is often difficult to conduct, especially in children, because of restricted space, forced immobility, and loud noises. Providing children with adequate and age-appropriate information about the procedurecould reduce the use of anesthesia, the time and cost necessary . This research investigated the emotional regulation skills of children when provided with an information and orientation task before the examination. Analogical scales were used to measure the levels of fear, pleasure, and pain felt by 60 children who were waiting for a brain magnetic Resonance in two

Happiness increases verbal and spatial working memory capacity where sadness does not: Emotion, working memory and executive control.

The effects of emotion on working memory and executive control are often studied in isolation. Positive mood enhances verbal and impairs spatial working memory, whereas negative mood enhances spatial and impairs verbal working memory. Moreover, positive mood enhances executive control, whereas negative mood has little influence. We examined how emotion influences verbal and spatial working memory capacity, which requires executive control to coordinate between holding information in working memory and completing a secondary task. We predicted that positive mood would improve both verbal and sp

Impact of BDNF Val66Met and 5-HTTLPR polymorphism variants on neural substrates related to sadness and executive function.

The brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) Val(66) Met allelic variation is linked to both the occurrence of mood disorders and antidepressant response. These findings are not universally observed, and the mechanism by which this variation results in increased risk for mood disorders is unclear. One possible explanation is an epistatic relationship with other neurotransmitter genes associated with depression risk, such as the serotonin-transporter-linked promotor region (5-HTTLPR). Further, it is unclear how the coexistence of the BDNF Met and 5-HTTLPR S variants affects the function of the

Anger, sadness, and the biology of myocardial infarction: reframing emotion as a driver of atherothrombosis - a literature review.

BACKGROUND: Negative emotions, including anger, depressive symptoms, and chronic psychosocial stress, are increasingly linked to residual atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk through neuroautonomic, inflammatory, endothelial, and thrombotic pathways. OBJECTIVES: To synthesize epidemiologic, mechanistic, and interventional evidence relating anger and depressive affect to myocardial infarction (MI) risk, and to outline clinically actionable translational opportunities. METHODS: We conducted a literature review of adult human studies identified through searches of MEDLINE/PubMed,

Comparative pathogenesis of recombinant rabies vaccine strain SAD-L16 and SAD-D29 with replacement of Arg333 in the glycoprotein after peripheral inoculation of neonatal mice: less neurovirulent strain is a stronger inducer of neuronal apoptosis.

Less neurovirulent strains of rabies virus have been recognized to be stronger inducers of neuronal apoptosis in vitro than more neurovirulent strains, but few studies have clarified whether this also applies in vivo. A comparative study was performed in two-day-old ICR mice inoculated in a hindlimb thigh muscle with recombinant rabies virus vaccine strain SAD-L16 (L16) or SAD-D29 (D29), which contains an attenuating substitution of Arg333 in the rabies virus glycoprotein. Histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses of brains were performed at early daily time points and in moribund ani

Neural processing of sad and happy autobiographical memories in women with depression and borderline personality disorder.

Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) are reported to have disrupted autobiographical memory (AM). Using functional magnetic resonance imaging we investigated behavioral and neural processing of the recall of emotional (sad and happy) memories in 30 MDD, 18 BPD, and 34 healthy control (HC) unmedicated women. The behavioral results showed that the MDD group experienced more sadness than the HC after the sad recall, while BPD participants experienced less happiness than HC after the happy recall. The fMRI results for sad AMs, compared to happy AM

Computer assisted identification of stress, anxiety, depression (SAD) in students: A state-of-the-art review.

Stress, depression, and anxiety are a person's physiological states that emerge from various body features such as speech, body language, eye contact, facial expression, etc. Physiological emotion is a part of human life and is associated with psychological activities. Sad emotion is relatable to negative thoughts and recognized in three stages containing stress, anxiety, and depression. These stages of Physiological emotion show various common and distinguished symptoms. The present study explores stress, depression, and anxiety symptoms in student life. The study reviews the psychological fe

Dissociating maternal responses to sad and happy facial expressions of their own child: An fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal sensitive behavior depends on recognizing one's own child's affective states. The present study investigated distinct and overlapping neural responses of mothers to sad and happy facial expressions of their own child (in comparison to facial expressions of an unfamiliar child). METHODS: We used functional MRI to measure dissociable and overlapping activation patterns in 27 healthy mothers in response to happy, neutral and sad facial expressions of their own school-aged child and a gender- and age-matched unfamiliar child. To investigate differential activation to sad comp
