Condom use and associated factors among people living with HIV/AIDS on Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) in Ethiopia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Condom use remains a crucial preventive measure for individuals undergoing antiretroviral therapy (ART) in the fight against HIV/AIDS. This review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the pooled prevalence of condom use and the factors associated with it among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) on ART in Ethiopia. We conducted systematic searches across various databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar, Embase, and Cochrane Library, to identify relevant research articles. The review followed the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. We included cross-sectional studies from Ethiopia reporting condom use p

The impact of prevention-effective PrEP use on HIV incidence: a mathematical modelling study.

INTRODUCTION: Models that project the impact and cost-effectiveness of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) must specify how PrEP use aligns with HIV exposure. We hypothesized that varying PrEP use according to individual-level partnership dynamics rather than prioritization to population subgroups based on average risk will result in larger incidence reductions and greater efficiency. METHODS: We used an individual-based network transmission model calibrated to HIV dynamics in Eswatini to simulate PrEP use among individuals ages 15-34 between 2022 and 2031 under two paradigms of PrEP delivery

Tactics Young Women Use to Resist Condom Use When a Partner Wants to Use a Condom.

Although there is a growing literature on men's condom use resistance (CUR) tactics (e.g., direct requests, deception), little research exists on women's CUR tactics. This study investigated young women's (ages 18 to 21) self-reported use of CUR tactics since age 14 and related individual difference factors. Participants included 235 sexually active heterosexual women from a nationwide convenience survey sample who completed a newly adapted women's version of the Condom Use Resistance Survey. Consistent with the limited previous research, women were most likely to use risk-level reassurance (3

Is cost a structural barrier preventing men who have sex with men accessing condoms? A systematic review.

A systematic review was undertaken to determine whether cost is a structural barrier preventing men who have sex with men (MSM) accessing condoms. Studies were examined from a range of countries where condoms have been distributed free to particular populations and also those where condoms were available at a cost to the individual. The study inclusion criteria were: published between January 1990 and September 2014 inclusive; published in any language, discussed cost as a barrier to condom use, discussed cost barriers to MSM accessing condoms and included a measure of outcome. Articles were s

Preventing sexual transmission of HIV.

The risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission during sexual activity is dependent on the infectivity of the HIV-positive individual and the susceptibility of the uninfected partner. HIV is most often transmitted during periods of high HIV load, but factors such as the type of sexual activity and the innate and genetic defenses of the uninfected partner exert a strong influence on the risk of transmission. Certain factors, such as coinfection with other sexually transmitted diseases or the presence of genital lesions in either sexual partner, amplify the risk of transmission that

HIV prevalence and awareness among adults presenting for enrolment into a study of people at risk for HIV in Kisumu County, Western Kenya.

INTRODUCTION: Despite declines in new HIV diagnoses both globally and in Kenya, parts of Western Kenya still report high HIV prevalence and incidence. We evaluated HIV prevalence to inform the development of policies for strategic and targeted HIV prevention interventions. METHODS: Adult participants aged 18-35 years were recruited in Kisumu County and screened for HIV for a prospective HIV incidence cohort. Questionnaires assessed HIV-associated risk behaviors. Participants who tested positive for HIV were disaggregated into groups based on prior knowledge of their HIV status: previously-dia

Long-Acting Reversible Contraception, Condom Use, and Sexually Transmitted Infections: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Given mixed findings regarding the relationship between long-acting reversible contraception and condom use, this systematic review and meta-analysis synthesizes studies comparing sexually transmitted infection‒related outcomes between users of long-acting reversible contraception (intrauterine devices, implants) and users of moderately effective contraceptive methods (oral contraceptives, injectables, patches, rings). METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, Global Health, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, and Scopus were searched for articles published between January 1990 and July 2018. E

Condom Use at First Vaginal Intercourse Among Adolescents and Young Adults in the United States, 2002-2017.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe trends in vaginal intercourse (VI) and condom use during first VI from 2002 to 2017 among never-married 15- to 24-year-olds in the United States. METHODS: Data come from the National Survey of Family Growth. We used logistic regression and Stata's margins package to estimate the percentage reporting VI and condom use at first VI and to conduct statistical comparisons across time. RESULTS: VI was stable for 20- to 24-year-old men, but their condom use increased after 2002. For 15- to 19-year-old men, VI declined after 2011-2015 but condom use

Risk of sexual transmission of human immunodeficiency virus with antiretroviral therapy, suppressed viral load and condom use: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The Public Health Agency of Canada reviewed sexual transmission of HIV between serodiscordant partners to support examination of the criminal justice system response to HIV nondisclosure by the Department of Justice of Canada. We sought to determine HIV transmission risk when an HIV-positive partner takes antiretroviral therapy, has a suppressed viral load or uses condoms. METHODS: We conducted an overview and systematic review update by searching MEDLINE and other databases (Jan. 1, 2007, to Mar. 13, 2017; and Nov. 1, 2012, to Apr. 27, 2017, respectively). Condom Use Among Male Sex Workers With Their Male Clients in Mombasa, Kenya: Results of a Sub-analysis of a Pilot, Multilevel, Structural, HIV Risk-Reduction Intervention.

Despite the advent of preexposure prophylaxis, consistent condom use continues to be recommended because preexposure prophylaxis does not prevent sexually transmitted infections. This is important for high-risk populations (e.g., male sex workers; MSW) in low-resource, high-HIV/sexually transmitted infection prevalence settings, such as the Mombasa region in Kenya. This study aimed to examine the relationship between MSW's condom use, and their knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes about condoms. MSW (N = 158) completed surveys on their sexual behaviors/practices/attitudes. We used multiple regres

Work environments and HIV prevention: a qualitative review and meta-synthesis of sex worker narratives.

BACKGROUND: Sex workers (SWs) experience a disproportionately high burden of HIV, with evidence indicating that complex and dynamic factors within work environments play a critical role in mitigating or producing HIV risks in sex work. In light of sweeping policy efforts to further criminalize sex work globally, coupled with emerging calls for structural responses situated in labour and human-rights frameworks, this meta-synthesis of the qualitative and ethnographic literature sought to examine SWs' narratives to elucidate the ways in which physical, social and policy features of diverse work

[Three-level logistic analysis related to influencing factors on condom use among female sex workers aged 35 years and above in Qingdao].

Objective: To analyze the influencing factors on condom use among 35-years-or-older female sex workers (OFSWs) in Qingdao by using the three-level logistic model. Methods: From March to June 2014, OFSWs were recruited in Qingdao, using respondent-driven sampling. Related information on OFSWs and their recent five sexual partners (not including husband) were obtained by conducting a questionnaire survey on OFSWs. A Three-level logistic regression model was conducted to analyze the influencing factors of condom use between OFSWs and their sexual partners. Results: A total of 420 OFSWs participat

Negotiating safer sex: a detailed analysis of attitude functions, anticipated emotions, relationship status and gender.

OBJECTIVE: Because interpersonal discussion about condom use can encourage subsequent condom use, this project aims to examine the psychological antecedents of intentions to discuss or request the use of condoms with a sexual partner. METHOD: The data were collected from 849 heterosexual college students in the U.S.A. through an online survey. The survey contained several measures related to attitude functions (i.e., motivations), efficacy, norms and intentions to discuss condom use with a sexual partner. RESULTS: Participants' attitude functions weakly predicted intentions to discuss condom

Sexual abuse history, alcohol intoxication, and women's sexual risk behavior.

We examined potential differences in women's likelihood of sexual risk taking in a laboratory setting based on alcohol intoxication and sexual abuse history. Participants (n = 64) were classified as non-sexually abused (NSA) or as having experienced sexual abuse in childhood only (CSA) or adulthood only (ASA) and randomly assigned to consume alcoholic (.06, .08, or .10% target blood alcohol content) or non-alcoholic drinks, after which participants read and responded to a risky sex vignette. Dependent measures included vaginal pulse amplitude, self-reported sexual arousal, likelihood of engagi
