[Mineral saturation, ossification and synostosis of the hand bones in adolescents and youth].

The results on X-ray densitometric studies of the hand bones in adolescent and young people at the age of 10--17 years (369 persons in all) are presented in the work. Processes of mineralization, ossification and synostosis, as the investigation has demonstrated, are closely connected with each other. From the beginning of ossification in the pisiform and sesamoid bones of the first metacarpophalageal joint (11--12 years of age) up to the completion of synostosis in short tubular bones of the hand (15--16 years of age), a decrease of mineral salts is noted in osseous tissue. Hence, accumulatio

Adrenal Insufficiency: A Case Study.

Adrenal insufficiency is a disorder of the adrenal glands, where the glands fail to produce adequate mineralocorticoids, glucocorticoids, and adrenal androgens. The most common cause of primary adrenal insufficiency in developed countries is autoimmune; however, medications, infectious diseases, and trauma can also induce adrenal insufficiency. Exogenous steroid use is also a common cause of secondary adrenal insufficiency. Symptoms are related to alterations in the salt and water balance in the body and develop slowly over several months. Patients usually develop fatigue, nausea, vomiting, ab

Effects of the environment on the evolution of the vertebrate urinary tract.

Evolution of the vertebrate urinary system occurs in response to numerous selective pressures, which have been incompletely characterized. Developing research into urinary evolution led to the occurrence of clinical applications and insights in paediatric urology, reproductive medicine, urolithiasis and other domains. Each nephron segment and urinary organ has functions that can be contextualized within an evolutionary framework. For example, the structure and function of the glomerulus and proximal tubule are highly conserved, enabling blood cells and proteins to be retained, and facilitating

Neutrophil Extracellular Traps Promote the Development and Growth of Human Salivary Stones.

Salivary gland stones, or sialoliths, are the most common cause of the obstruction of salivary glands. The mechanism behind the formation of sialoliths has been elusive. Symptomatic sialolithiasis has a prevalence of 0.45% in the general population, is characterized by recurrent painful periprandial swelling of the affected gland, and often results in sialadenitis with the need for surgical intervention. Here, we show by the use of immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, computed tomography (CT) scans and reconstructions, special dye techniques, bacterial genotyping, and enzyme activity anal

Downregulation of aquaporins 1 and 5 in nasal gland by osmotic stress in ducklings, Anas platyrhynchos: implications for the production of hypertonic fluid.

Using primers against highly conserved regions of mammalian and bird aquaporins in RT-PCR experiments, we amplified products derived from duck (Anas platyrhynchos) nasal gland RNA that were identified as homologues of mammalian and chicken aquaporin 1 and aquaporin 5 cDNAs by sequencing. Using digoxigenin-labelled probes derived from these PCR products in northern blot analyses of mRNA isolated from nasal glands of untreated (naïve) or osmotically stressed ducklings (replacement of drinking water with a 1% NaCl solution), we observed a decrease in aquaporin 1 (AQP1) and aquaporin 5 (AQP5) mRNA

Iodine Deficiency-Induced Thyrotoxicosis Mimicking Graves' Disease: A Case of Triiodothyronine (T3)-Predominant Hyperthyroidism Without Goiter.

Triiodothyronine (T3)-predominant thyrotoxicosis without goiter is uncommon, with differential diagnoses including Graves' disease, thyroiditis, and iodine deficiency-related autonomy. Diagnostic certainty can be challenging in resource-constrained settings. We describe a 41-year-old man who presented with palpitations, heat intolerance, and weight loss and reported exclusive use of non-iodized rock salt for three years. Examination revealed tachycardia and tremor without goiter or orbitopathy. Thyroid function tests showed suppressed thyroid-stimulating hormone, elevated free T3, normal free

Tritiated thymidine autoradiographic study on the origin and renewal of argentaffin cells in the pyloric gland of hamsters.

The origin and renewal of the argentaffin cells in the pyloric glands of hamsters were studied by flash, cumulative and pulse labelling autoradiography with 3H-thymidine. The argentaffin cells were identified by the Diazo Method using Fast Red B Salt. By flash labelling autoradiography, it was shown that the argentaffin cells located from the middle to the lower level of the pyloric mucosa were not labelled with 3H-thymidine, indicating that this cell type has no proliferative activity. On the 10th and the 20th day of cumulative labelling, 31% and 63% of the argentaffin cells in the gland were

The alleviating effect of dietary electrolyte balance levels on heat stress via regulating water and ion metabolism in Pekin ducks.

1. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary electrolyte balance (DEB) concentrations on growth performance, heat sensitivity biomarkers and water and ion metabolism of meat ducks under heat stress (HS).2. A total of 400, 28-d-old Cherry Valley male meat ducks were randomly divided into five treatment groups (eight pens per treatment with 10 birds/pen), with dietary different DEB values, 120, 160, 200, 240 and 280 mmol/kg.3. Ducks in the 240-mmol/kg DEB group had a tendency (p = 0.098) for increased body weight at 41 d of age. The 240-mmol/kg DEB group displayed the nu

OBSERVATIONS ON TETANY IN DOGS : RELATION OF THE PARATHYROIDS TO THE THYROID; RELATION OF TETANY TO AGE, AMOUNT OF PARATHYROID TISSUE REMOVED, ACCESSORY PARATHYROIDS, PREGNANCY, LACTATION, RICKETS, SULPHUR, AND DIET; RELATION OF PARATHYROIDS TO SUGAR TOLERANCE; EFFECT OF CALCIUM SALTS.

Accessory parathyroid tissue unassociated with the thyroid lobes is present in 5 to 6 per cent. of dogs. For the determination of the presence of accessory parathyroid tissue there are two tests: (1) the anatomical, often entailing serial sections of the neck and upper thoracic structures, and (2) the biological, consisting of the daily use of some calcium salt for two to three weeks. The latter is more easily carried out and more accurate. In the absence of all parathyroid tissue calcium salts will not save the animal's life, while in the presence of active parathyroid tissue calcium will sav

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) and vasopressin (AVP) in the hypothalamo-neurohypophysial axis of salt-loaded or Brattleboro rats.

A close anatomical relationship between nerve terminals containing neuropeptide Y (NPY) and vasopressin (AVP) has been demonstrated in the hypothalamic paraventricular (PVN) and supraoptic nuclei (SON). Furthermore, injections of NPY into the SON increased plasma concentrations of AVP in the rat. These data suggest a potential involvement of hypothalamic NPY in fluid homeostasis in the rat. Therefore, we have studied the effect of elevated plasma osmolality on the concentration of NPY and AVP in the hypothalamus and neurointermediate lobe (NIL) of the pituitary gland. Furthermore, we measured

Sonography in neonatal congenital adrenal hyperplasia.

Adrenal gland size was evaluated in six infants with congenital adrenal hyperplasia. All of the infants had a severe deficiency of the 21-hydroxylase enzyme resulting in the salt-losing form of congenital adrenal hyperplasia. The adrenal measurements were compared with those of 40 consecutive age-matched, asymptomatic infants. Mean adrenal length was 14.4 mm and width was 1.9 mm in asymptomatic infants, whereas in infants with congenital adrenal hyperplasia mean adrenal length was 23.7 mm and width was 5.3 mm. Although infants with congenital adrenal hyperplasia may have normal-sized adrenal g

A unique presentation of calcinosis cutis in a patient with cystic fibrosis after double lung transplants.

Calcinosis cutis is the deposition of insoluble calcium salts in the skin and subcutaneous tissue. We report the case of a 28-year-old Caucasian woman with cystic fibrosis in whom strikingly symmetrical and reticulate calcinosis cutis developed on the lower extremities, which was noted on histology to spare the eccrine glands. Careful review of the literature fails to reveal any previous report with these remarkable cutaneous and histologic manifestations.

[Iodine nutrition and thyroid diseases].

Iodine, an essential component of the hormones produced by the thyroid gland, is widely but unevenly distributed in the earth's environment. Great difference exists in the iodine nutritional status of populations residing in different region. Both iodine deficiency and iodine excess can injure the thyroid gland. Iodine deficiency tigers endemic goiter, cretinism, and hyperthyroidism, while iodine excess can result in high iodine goiter, chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, iodine-induced hyperthyroidism, and hypothyroidism; also, iodine deficiency or excess may affect the histological type of thyr

Sheehan syndrome with Gitelman syndrome, Tackling Additive Morbidity.

Sheehan syndrome (SS) is postpartum hypopituitarism resulting from pituitary gland necrosis caused by severe hypotension due to massive intra or post-partum hemorrhage. Defective NaCl transport in the distal convoluted tubule, due to mutations affecting the thiazide sensitive Na-Cl-cotransporter results in the autosomal recessive salt-losing renal tubulopathy, Gitelman syndrome (GS). These two have been rarely described together. We report the case of a middle-aged woman with both these conditions, resulting in management issues. Physicians encountering unexplained hypokalemia refractory to st

Impact of iodine intake on the pathogenesis of autoimmune thyroid disease in children and adults.

Thyroid hormone (TH) regulates the body's metabolism and iodine, a vital trace mineral, is vital for TH synthesis. As a TH biosynthesis catalyst, iodine has a substantial role in our health. When there is a modest iodine deficit, the thyroid gland grows autonomously, resulting in thyrotoxicosis. Those who consume excessive iodine risk developing hypothyroidism and thyroid autoimmunity. A transient hyperthyroid condition may rapidly increase iodine consumption. Iodine deficiency is common across the globe, and provision of supplementary iodine, in forms such as iodized salt or vegetable oi

Iodine Deficiency Disorder and Knowledge about Benefit and Food Source of Iodine among Adolescent Girls in the North Shewa Zone of Amhara Region.

BACKGROUND: As the dietary iodine content depends on the iodine contents of the soil where the crop is harvested, in highland areas where the iodine content of topsoil was washed away due to erosion, iodized salt is the main source of iodine. This study assessed the magnitude of iodine deficiency disorder and knowledge about the benefit and food sources of iodine among adolescent girls in the highland areas of the North Shewa Zone, Amhara Region, central Ethiopia. METHODS: An institutional cross-sectional study was conducted from October 5, 2018, to December 30, 2019. Through a multistage sam
