Comprehensive genomic analysis of the maize ACP gene family reveals ZmACP1-mediated salt stress tolerance in Arabidopsis.

This study identifies 11 ZmACP genes in maize, revealing their role in salt stress adaptation, with ZmACP1 overexpression enhancing salt tolerance in Arabidopsis. Soil salinity is an escalating global threat that compromises crop yields. Acyl carrier proteins (ACPs) are essential cofactors of type II fatty acid synthase that determine acyl-chain length and unsaturation, yet their evolutionary diversification and functional relevance to salt stress remain poorly understood in maize (Zea mays L.). In this study, we identified 11 nonredundant ZmACP genes encoding proteins of 105-141 amino acids t

GmFER1, a soybean ferritin, enhances tolerance to salt stress and root rot disease and improves soybean yield.

The plant stress response mechanism is activated by biotic and abiotic stresses, but its continuous activation typically affects growth. The role of ferritin in regulating biomass accumulation has been extensively characterized in diverse plant species; however, the underlying mechanisms through which it contributes to salt stress tolerance and Fusarium resistance remain poorly understood. Here, we confirm that overexpression of ferritin leads to iron accumulation and Fe3+ sequestration in both aboveground and roots, activating the iron uptake and transport system. More importantly, GmFER1 enh

A fasciclin-like arabinogalactan protein OsFLA8 is involved in Casparian strip formation and salt tolerance in rice.

FASCICLIN-LIKE ARABINOGALACTAN PROTEINs (FLAs), a subclass of plant arabinogalactan proteins (AGPs), play diverse roles in plant development, including pollen development, secondary cell wall regulation, and root and stem growth. However, the biological functions of the majority of FLA-encoded proteins in rice remain largely unexplored, particularly their roles in root development and cell wall formation. In this study, we identified OsFLA8, a member of the FLA family, as a critical component of Casparian strip (CS) formation and salt stress tolerance in rice. Subcellular localization and expr

Hydrogen sulfide enhances salt tolerance in sorghum by activating the chloroplastic AsA-GSH cycle to sustain photosynthesis.

Soil salinization poses a severe threat to global food security by reducing crop productivity, particularly in semi-arid regions where sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) is a major cereal crop. Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) has recently been recognized as a signaling molecule involved in plant stress tolerance. However, its role in regulating the chloroplastic ascorbate-glutathione (AsA-GSH) cycle and photosynthetic performance in sorghum under salt stress remains unclear. To investigate the potential regulatory role of exogenous H₂S, sorghum seedlings were subjected to salt stress with or without sodium h

Brassinosteroid enhances salt tolerance via S-nitrosoglutathione reductase and nitric oxide signaling pathway in mangrove Kandelia obovata.

Brassinosteroid (BR) has been shown to modulate plant tolerance to various stresses. S-nitrosoglutathione reductase (GSNOR) is involved in the plant response to environment stress by fine-turning the level of nitric oxide (NO). However, whether GSNOR is involved in BR-regulated Na+ /K+ homeostasis to improve the salt tolerance in halophyte is unknown. Here, we firstly reported that high salinity increases the expression of BR-biosynthesis genes and the endogenous levels of BR in mangrove Kandelia obovata. Then, salt-induced BR triggers the activities and gene expressions of GSNOR and antioxida

The Potato ERF Transcription Factor StERF3 Negatively Regulates Resistance to Phytophthora infestans and Salt Tolerance in Potato.

Ethylene response factors (ERFs) are unique to the plant kingdom and play crucial roles in plant response to various biotic and abiotic stresses. We show here that a potato StERF3, which contains an ERF-associated amphiphilic repression (EAR) motif in its C-terminal region, negatively regulates resistance to Phytophthora infestans and salt tolerance in potato. The StERF3 promoter responds to induction by salicylic acid, ABA ethylene and NaCl, as well as P. infestans, the causal agent of potato late blight disease. StERF3 could bind to the GCC box element of the HIS3 promoter and activate trans

Ectopic expression of dehydration responsive element binding proteins (StDREB2) confers higher tolerance to salt stress in potato.

Dehydration responsive element binding proteins (DREB) are members of a larger family of transcription factors, many of which have been reported to contribute to plant responses to abiotic stresses in several species. While, little is known about their role in potato (Solanum tuberosum). This report describes the cloning and characterization of a DREB transcription factor cDNA, StDREB2, isolated from potato (cv Nicola) plants submitted to salt treatment. Based on a multiple sequence alignment, this protein was classified into the A-5 group of DREB subfamily. Expression studies revealed that St

Salt-tolerant PGPR strain Priestia endophytica SK1 promotes fenugreek growth under salt stress by inducing nitrogen assimilation and secondary metabolites.

AIMS: Soil salinity is a huge obstacle in crop production worldwide. Saline soil can reduce active chemical contents in medicinal plants of the Leguminosae family through crippled normal nodule function. Intensive efforts are underway to improve yield and medicinal value of leguminous herbs under salt stress condition by using benign microbes. Here, an attempt was made to explore the salt-tolerant bacteria associated with rhizosphere of fenugreek plant (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) and to evaluate their impact on host plant growth and metabolite of pharmaceutical importance. Microbial community changes induced by a newly isolated salt-tolerant Tetragenococcus muriaticus improve the volatile flavor formation in low-salt fish sauce.

Application of low-salt fish sauce is restricted by its easy spoilage and poor flavor formation. In this study, a salt-tolerant strain Tetragenococcus muriaticus with powerful salt tolerance was isolated as starter for the low-salt fish sauce fermentation. The 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing showed that Staphylococcus was the main microbial genus at the beginning of fermentation, reaching 73.75%, followed by Tetragenococcus (16.36%) and Pseudomonas (6.68%), while Tetragenococcus quickly took over the dominant position with the relative abundance over 56.9% after 10 d fermentation and

CRISPR/Cas9-mediated disruption of OsPLDβ1 enhances salt stress tolerance in rice through modulation of antioxidant defense.

Soil salinity is a critical abiotic stress that severely constrains rice productivity and threatens global food security. Phospholipase D (PLD) enzymes play pivotal roles in plant stress signaling; however, the specific function of OsPLDβ1 in rice salt stress responses remains unclear. We here investigated the role of OsPLDβ1 using knockout mutants to elucidate its regulatory function under saline conditions. Ospldβ1-mutant lines exhibited substantially improved salt tolerance in contrast to wild-type plants. Improved tolerance was associated with elevated reactive oxygen species (ROS) scaveng

Desert-derived Ensifer sp. SA403 enhances potato salt tolerance by reshaping rhizosphere microbiome functions and host responses.

Soil salinization increasingly threatens global food security, and potato (Solanum tuberosum L.), a moderately salt-sensitive crop, is particularly vulnerable to saline soils. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) offer a promising strategy to improve crop performance, yet how PGPR interact with native microorganisms to enhance potato salt tolerance remains poorly understood. In this study, we identified a desert-derived PGPR strain, Ensifer sp. SA403, which substantially enhanced potato performance under high salinity across sterile, non-sterile and field conditions. Beyond the salt barrier: CRISPR-mediated DNA reprogramming to uncouple yield from tolerance in Rice: A review.

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) feeds half of humanity, yet its cultivation is increasingly threatened by soil salinization, which now affects 1.4 billion hectares globally. Decades of breeding and engineering have focused on Na+ exclusion, principally through the Saltol QTL and the xylem-unloading transporter OsHKT1;5, yet this strategy has reached a physiological ceiling. Excluder genotypes survive salinity but fail to fill grain, because the ATP-intensive cost of continuous ion extrusion starves reproductive sinks, while ABA-mediated stomatal closure imposes chronic carbon limitation. The resulting

Root Surface Electrochemical Properties Correlate with Salt Tolerance and Sodium Adsorption in Miscanthus Accessions: A Hydroponic Study.

Soil salinization threatens global agriculture, yet the mechanisms of salt tolerance in bioenergy crops like Miscanthus remain poorly understood. While root surface electrochemistry has been studied in crop species, its effect on salt tolerance among Miscanthus accessions remains underexplored. Therefore, this study examined whether root surface electrochemical properties are associated with differential salt tolerance and Na+ adsorption in eight Miscanthus accessions. Hydroponically grown plants were subjected to 1% NaCl for three weeks. Salt-tolerant accessions (394, 390, 422, 401) showed si

Screening Key Genes for Salt Tolerance in Maize Inbred Lines via Time-Series Transcriptomics and Machine Learning.

A systematic evaluation of salt tolerance at the seedling stage was conducted using 143 maize inbred lines under a 150 mM mixed-salt solution (NaCl:Na2SO4 = 9:1, EC = 16.78 dS/m) that mirrors the ionic composition of saline groundwater in the Yellow River Delta. The comprehensive salt tolerance index (D value) ranged from 0.15 to 0.85 across the population, with the elite line B114 exhibiting the highest D value (0.835) and the sensitive line PHT55 ranking near the bottom. Under salt stress, B114 displayed remarkable growth stability, with plant height decreasing by only 25.9%, fresh weight by

Nitric oxide-induced Na+/H+ exchange activity confers salt tolerance in pea (Pisum sativum L.) mesophyll cells.

Salinity stress severely hinders global agricultural productivity, and the issue will only increase under current climate scenarios. Due to complexity of salinity tolerance traits, crop breeding for salt tolerance remains a highly challenging task. The exogenous application of growth regulators, such as nitric oxide (NO), is considered a viable practical alternative to boost crop yield and quality under conditions of soil salinity. Numerous papers reported beneficial role of exogenous NO application on plant growth under salt stress, but very few explored the mechanistic basis of this process.

Characterization of Siccibacter sp. Strain C2 a Novel Rhizobacterium that Enhances Tolerance of Barley to Salt Stress.

Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) arouse an increasing interest as an eco-friendly solution for improving crop tolerance to environmental stresses. In this study, we report the characterization of a novel halotolerant PGPR strain (named C2) identified in a screen of rhizospheric bacterial isolates from southeast of Tunisia. Phylogenetic analysis showed that strain C2 is most likely affiliated to the genus Siccibacter with Siccibacter turicensis as the closest species (98.19%). This strain was able to perform phosphate solubilization and production of indole acetic acid (IAA), siderop

Comparative Proteomic Analysis Reveals the Regulatory Effects of H2S on Salt Tolerance of Mangrove Plant Kandelia obovata.

As a dominant mangrove species, Kandelia obovata is distributed in an intertidal marsh with an active H2S release. Whether H2S participates in the salt tolerance of mangrove plants is still ambiguous, although increasing evidence has demonstrated that H2S functions in plant responses to multiple abiotic stresses. In this study, NaHS was used as an H2S donor to investigate the regulatory mechanism of H2S on the salt tolerance of K. obovata seedlings by using a combined physiological and proteomic analysis. The results showed that the reduction in photosynthesis (Pn) caused by 400 mM of NaCl was

Hydrogen sulfide enhances salt tolerance through nitric oxide-mediated maintenance of ion homeostasis in barley seedling roots.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and nitric oxide (NO) are emerging as messenger molecules involved in the modulation of plant physiological processes. Here, we investigated a signalling network involving H2S and NO in salt tolerance pathway of barley. NaHS, a donor of H2S, at a low concentration of either 50 or 100 μM, had significant rescue effects on the 150 mM NaCl-induced inhibition of plant growth and modulated the K(+)/Na(+) balance by decreasing the net K(+) efflux and increasing the gene expression of an inward-rectifying potassium channel (HvAKT1) and a high-affinity K(+) uptake system (HvHAK4

Mutations in the listerial proB gene leading to proline overproduction: effects on salt tolerance and murine infection.

The observed sensitivity of Listeria monocytogenes to the toxic proline analogue L-azetidine-2-carboxylic acid (AZ) suggested that proline synthesis in Listeria may be regulated by feedback inhibition of gamma-glutamyl kinase (GK), the first enzyme of the proline biosynthesis pathway, encoded by the proB gene. Taking advantage of the Epicurian coli mutator strain XL1-Red, we performed random mutagenesis of the recently described proBA operon and generated three independent mutations in the listerial proB homologue, leading to proline overproduction and salt tolerance when expressed in an E. co
