Abietane diterpenoids from Salvia sahendica--antiprotozoal activity and determination of their absolute configurations.

In a screening of Iranian plants for antiprotozoal activity, an n-hexane extract of the roots of Salvia sahendica potently inhibited the growth of Plasmodium falciparum K1 strain. Subsequent HPLC-based activity profiling led to the identification of seven known and one new abietane-type diterpenoid. Structure elucidation was achieved by analysis of spectroscopic data including 1D and 2D NMR. The absolute configuration of sahandol (7) and sahandone (8) were assigned by comparison of experimental ECD spectra with calculated ECD data, using time-dependent density functional theory and methanol as

Salvia splendens adapted to moderate ozone concentration by growth compensatory rather than defense.

Ground-level ozone (O3) poses a serious threat to urban ornamental plants, while the underlying adaptive strategies of many common species remain poorly understood. In this study, Salvia splendens, a widely cultivated herbaceous ornamental plant, was exposed to three O3 regimes in open-top chambers: ambient air (AA), moderate O3 (AA + 40 ppb), and high O3 (AA + 80 ppb). Over a 63-day fumigation period, we comprehensively evaluated plant growth, photosynthetic performance, non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs), stomatal characteristics, and antioxidant defense responses. Moderate O3 markedly prom

Supercritical fluid chromatography for the separation of lipophilic tanshinones from Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge.

This study systematically investigated the retention behavior of lipophilic tanshinones (Tans) on distinct stationary phases and developed a supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) method under a binary mobile phase (CO2 and methanol). The non-polar VCC18 column showed extremely weak retention and virtually no separation selectivity for eleven standards. Despite some improvements observed with several typical polar columns (Viridis Silica, Diol, and NH2) and a SFC dedicated column (Torus 2-PIC), peak shapes and selectivity remained poor. However, a highly polar Click TE-Cys column exhibited g

The key phytochemistry of rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus) contributing to hair protection against UV.

UNLABELLED: Extracts from rosemary (Salvia Rosmarinus) are analysed for their phytochemistry using LC-MS and the phytochemistry identified. The same extracts were tested for their efficacy to act as antioxidants by both hydrogen-atom transfer (ORAC) and single electron transfer (FRAP). A correlation analysis was performed to identify the key phytochemistry responsible for antioxidant efficacy. The top performing extracts were then tested in a peptide model and in hair with the presence of UV to measure ability to protect against UV-induced peptide and protein damage. Polyphenols (e.g. rosmarin
