Acervuli obtained from fragments of the human pineal glands of subjects of both sexes and age ranging from 23 to 87 years were analyzed by light microscopy after histochemical stains and by EDS-microanalysis. It was found that the sub-units and acervuli are positive to P.A.S., Alcian Blue pH 2.5, Gomori-Bargmann procedures for the presence of proteins, glycoproteins, proteoglycans and of the neurosecretory material in different layers of the sub-units and acervuli. We suppose that the increase of Mg++ in the sub-unit from the core to the periphery is responsible for the inhibition of following

The trabecular bone of the vertebrae of 30 male and 30 female sand rats (Psammomys obesus) aged 13 to 33 months was examined histologically and morphometrically. The usual age-linked decline of bone mass failed to occur in females and was statistically not significant in males. A few changes with age were noted at the cellular level. Sex differences were statistically significant only in animals living into the third year of life, males having a smaller bone mass than females. This abnormality of the vertebral spongiosa is attributed to pathologic local stresses caused by the numerous instance

BACKGROUND: Sand fly fever virus (SFFV) infection is an acute self-limiting febrile illness caused by phleboviruses and transmitted by sand flies of the Phlebotomus species. The disease has been reported in the Mediterranean region, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Indian subcontinent, and is now considered to be expanding into new geographic areas. Clinically, SFFV infection closely resembles acute dengue fever.
AIM: To detect other possible infection including SSFV in patients with clinically suspected dengue fever with negative serology results for NS1 antigen.
METHODS: In this stud

Most human pathogenic Leishmania species are zoonotic agents; therefore, sand fly-based control strategies are essential to prevent parasite circulation. Here, we used the Delftia tsuruhatensis TC1 strain, that inhibits the development of Plasmodium in mosquitoes, but in the context of Leishmania-infected sand flies. We show that D. tsuruhatensis TC1 colonizes the midgut of Phlebotomus duboscqi sand flies and impacts the development of L. major parasites, independently of the colonization timing. This phenotype is likely an indirect consequence of D. tsuruhatensis colonization, related with th

Spiders of the Sicarius genera (Araneae: Sicariidae) are commonly known as six-eyed sand spiders. Of the species described in Latin America, the species S. thomisoides has previously been shown to possess venom with a toxic potential comparable to that observed in the venom of the spider L. laeta. Although identifying the phospholipase D activity in the venom of S. thomisoides, it is still unknown what other components are part of the venom. In this study, we described the identification of the main protein components of S. thomisoides venom, revealing that the phospholipase D family were the

Enterolithiasis is typically associated with gastrointestinal tract stasis. Here, we report on a rare case of chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction with sand-like enterolithiasis in an 18-year-old Japanese female admitted to our hospital with high fever and abdominal pain. Despite initiating antibiotic treatment, the fever persisted. A contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed colonic enlargement and a large amount of residue with a high-density area in the ascending colon. A colonoscopy revealed sand-like enteroliths in the ascending colon, which were drained using a colonoscope. The pat

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is transmitted by Leishmania-infected sand fly bites and malnutrition is a known risk factor in human VL. Models using sand fly transmission or malnutrition promote parasite dissemination. By investigating features of L. donovani-Lutzomyia longipalpis transmission to malnourished mice, we show that a comparable IL1-β-driven acute inflammation is maintained in malnourished (MN-SF) and well-nourished (WN-SF) sand fly-infected mice. However, parasite dissemination was more pronounced in MN-SF that had a significantly higher acute (P ≤ 0.001) and chronic (P ≤ 0.0001) sp

INTRODUCTION: The Hedi virus (HEDV) and Wuxiang virus (WUXV) are newly discovered Bunyaviruses transmitted by sandflies. The geographical distribution of isolation of these two viruses continues to expand and it has been reported that WUXV causes neurological symptoms and even death in suckling mice. However, little is known about the prevalence of the two viruses in mammalian infections.
METHODS: In order to understand the infection status of HEDV and WUXV in humans and animals from regions where the viruses have been isolated, this study used Western blotting to detect the positive rates of

Lutzomyia longipalpis sand flies are the major natural vector of Leishmania infantum parasites, responsible for transmission of visceral leishmaniasis in the New World. Several experimental studies have demonstrated the ability of Lu. longipalpis to sustain development of different Leishmania species. However, no study had explored in depth the potential vector competence of Lu. longipalpis for Leishmania species other than L. infantum. Here, we show that Lu. longipalpis is a competent vector of L. major parasites, being able to acquire parasites from active cutaneous leishmaniasis lesions, su

IMPORTANCE: Bilateral vestibular failure is a debilitating condition that may lead to oscillopia and adversely affect quality of life. Researchers have suggested that vestibular function might be restored with implantation of an external mechanical stimulation device. However, it is essential that such a device must not interfere with normal hearing.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of vestibular implant insertion on hearing in a sand rat model with normal hearing.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND SUBJECTS: The study was conducted in a tertiary medical center in accord with the guidelines of the Rabin

This study examined the spatial distribution and seasonal fluctuations of population densities of phlebotomine sand flies and was designed to obtain baseline data on the population trends of Phlebotomus argentipes, P. papatasi, and Sergentomyia spp. in a visceral leishmaniasis endemic area of Bihar, India. Beginning on 28 October 2009 and through 20 October 2010, 63 CDC light traps were evenly distributed in human homes, cattle sheds, combined dwellings, chicken coops, and adjacent vegetation areas in three villages in the Saran District of Bihar State. Sand fly collections were made on a week

BACKGROUND: Acoustic signals are part of the courtship of many insects and they often act as species-specific signals that are important in the reproductive isolation of closely related species. Here we report the courtship songs of the sand fly Lutzomyia (Nyssomyia) intermedia, one of the main vectors of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Brazil.
FINDINGS: Recordings were performed using insects from three localities from Eastern Brazil: Posse and Jacarepaguá in Rio de Janeiro State and Corte de Pedra in Bahia State. The three areas have remnants of the Brazilian Atlantic forest, they are endemic fo

Dissimilatory metal-reducing bacteria can mobilize As, but few studies have studied such processes in deeper orange-colored Pleistocene sands containing 1-2 mg kg(-1) As that are associated with low-As groundwater in Bangladesh. To address this gap, anaerobic incubations were conducted in replicate over 90 days using natural orange sands initially containing 0.14 mg kg(-1) of 1 M phosphate-extractable As (24 h), >99% as As(V), and 0.8 g kg(-1) of 1.2 M HCl-leachable Fe (1 h at 80 °C), 95% as Fe(III). An entomological survey was carried out in Mymensingh district which contributes the highest incidence of visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar) in Bangladesh. For the first time in Bangladesh CDC miniature light trap was used for indoor collection of sand flies. A total of 726 sand fly specimens belonging to nine species, one species of the genus Phlebotomus and eight species Sergentomyia genus were collected. Phlebotomus argentipes Annaandale Brunetti made up 59.2% of the total collection. Among Sergentomyia species Sergentomyia shorttii Adler & Theodor contributed 14.4% of the total collection.

The feeding success of sand flies (Diptera: Phlebotominae) is linked to the vast array of pharmacological substances in their saliva, which interferes with the host haemostasis and immune response. Modification of feeding site plays also an important role in Leishmania transmission. In naive hosts, co-inoculation of saliva and Leishmania parasites increases the chance of successful transmission. Disease exacerbation seems to be associated with enhanced production of type 2 cytokines and selective inhibition of some macrophage functions including the production of NO and H202. On the other hand

For the first time in West Africa, arboviruses were isolated from phlebotomine sand fly pools. One strain of Chandipura virus (a Vesiculovirus), four strains of Saboya virus (a Flavivirus), and one strain of a not yet identified virus were isolated. Three hundred twenty-two pools were established from a population of 33,917 sand flies caught in CO2 light traps in the Ferlo Sahelian region of Senegal from November 1991 to December 1992. This is the first isolation of Chandipura virus from any arthropod in Africa. Saboya virus has already been isolated from small rodents in Senegal; thus, its tr

Conservation interventions are increasingly required for species threatened by population declines and isolation due to anthropogenic pressures. Small, isolated populations are particularly vulnerable to the loss of genetic diversity, increased inbreeding, and the accumulation of deleterious mutations. Translocations or supplementation of allopatric individuals for genetic rescue may be the only way to increase genetic diversity and increase population persistence via increased adaptive potential. Here, we use an experimentally admixed population of sand lizards on a small island in Sweden as
