The protozoan Sarcocystis neurona can cause severe disease in horses, marine mammals, and several other animal species in North America. The Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) is its definitive host, and the raccoon (Procyon lotor) has been considered its primary intermediate host in the USA. Although canids have not previously been identified as important intermediate hosts for this parasite, we here report several natural cases in the gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus). We identified muscular infections in 11 (23.9 %) of 46 gray foxes from Pennsylvania, USA. In hematoxylin and eosin (H

Protozoa of the genus Sarcocystis are obligatory heterogenous parasites with both definitive and intermediate hosts. Opossums (Didelphis aurita) can shed multiple species of Sarcocystis with birds as the intermediate host. The pathologies of Sarcocystis species in birds have not been thoroughly elucidated. Therefore, the aim of the present study to determine the main lesions that can occur in acute and chronic infections in intermediate hosts, when they ingest infective sporocysts that are shed in the opossum's feces, using budgerigars as a model. To this end, 12 budgerigars, Melopsittacus und

The protozoans Toxoplasma gondii and Sarcocystis spp. (Sarcocystidae: Apicomplexa) affect a wide variety of vertebrates. Both have been reported to infect pinnipeds, with impacts on health ranging from inapparent to fulminant disease and death. However, little is known regarding their infections and associated pathology in South American pinnipeds. We used histological techniques to survey for the presence of T. gondii and Sarcocystis spp. in 51 stranded pinnipeds from Brazil. Immunohistochemical and molecular assays were employed in those cases consistent with Sarcocystidae infection. T. gond

Reports of Sarcocystis rileyi-like protozoa ('rice breast disease') from anseriform birds had been rare in Europe until the last two decades, when S. rileyi was identified in northern Europe and the UK. However, despite the economic losses resulting from S. rileyi infection, no recent accounts are available on its presence (which can be suspected) in most parts of central, western, southern and eastern Europe. Between 2014 and 2019, twelve mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) were observed to have rice breast disease in Hungary, and the last one of these 12 cases allowed molecular identification of S

Equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM) is a serious disease of horses, and its management continues to be a challenge for veterinarians. The protozoan Sarcocystis neurona is most commonly associated with EPM. S. neurona has emerged as a common cause of mortality in marine mammals, especially sea otters (Enhydra lutris). EPM-like illness has also been recorded in several other mammals, including domestic dogs and cats. This paper updates S. neurona and EPM information from the last 15 years on the advances regarding life cycle, molecular biology, epidemiology, clinical signs, diagnosis, treat

The prevalence of Sarcocystis species in muscle samples from gazelles kept as breeding groups at the King Khalid Wildlife Research Centre, Saudi Arabia, was determined by fibreoptic examination, pepsin digestion and histological techniques. No macroscopic sarcocysts were detected by fibreoptic examination, and the overall prevalence of Sarcocystis was 66 x 7 per cent by pepsin digestion, and 39 x 9 per cent by histological examination. By digestion, the tongue contained the highest density of bradyzoites in Gazella dorcas, and Gazella gazella erlangeri, the oesophagus in Gazella subgutturosa m

Sarcocystis infection, sarcocystosis or sarcosporidiosis is the disease caused by zoonotic intracellular protozoan parasite with an obligatory two-host life cycle namely Sarcocystis spp. The affected animals are mostly asymptomatic and the parasite is discovered only at slaughter. The aim of this study is to determine the status of sarcocystis infection in large ruminants slaughtered in four abattoirs in the state of Perak. A total of eighty-six fresh heart muscle and oesophagus samples were collected between February 2013 to October 2013. The samples were examined macroscopically to look for

PURPOSE: Sarcocystis spp. are protozoan parasites of livestock which also infect birds, lower vertebrates and mammals, including man. Wild and domestic ruminants such as red deer, roe deer, fallow deer, cattle, sheep and goats may act as intermediate hosts for many Sarcocystis species, some of which are significant pathogens causing sarcocystosis in livestock and humans. The purpose of the present study was to determine the prevalence of Sarcocystis species in fallow deer farmed in an open pasture system.
METHODS: Samples of heart and oesophagus tissue taken from five fallow deer were examine

BACKGROUND: Reports on Sarcocystis-infection of cattle are outdated or lacking in many European countries, including those in the Central-Eastern part of the continent. Therefore, to assess the prevalence of Sarcocystis spp. among bovids in Hungary, a countrywide survey was initiated. In addition, fulminant deaths of four cattle, that showed clinical signs and post mortem lesions resembling acute sarcocystiosis ("Dalmeny disease"), were investigated.
METHODS: During the countrywide survey individual heart and oesophagus samples were collected at slaughterhouses from 151 beef cattle and from 1

Samples of oesophagus, diaphragm and heart muscles were taken from one European bison from Białowieza Forest during seasonal European bison elimination in 2008. Five gram of each muscle was examined by staining small samples in 0.2% aqueous solution of methylene blue. After that they were placed between compressor glasses and examined under a dissecting microscope in order to detect Sarcocystis sp. infection. All sarcocysts observed were counted. The 5-g sample of the heart muscle yielded a total of 756 sarcocysts while that of the diaphragm contained 107 of them and that of the oesophagus--89

Sarcocystis aucheniae is a coccidian parasite responsible for macrocystic sarcocystosis in South American camelids (SACs), causing economic losses due to carcass condemnation and restrictions on meat commercialization. While the domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris) had been previously proposed as definitive host of this parasite based on experimental infection of puppies, evidence of adult dogs or other canids fulfilling this role under natural conditions was lacking. This study was thus designed to evaluate the presence of S. aucheniae infective stages in environmental fecal samples of canid

There have been report of possible food poisoning in Lithuania following the consumption of raw steaks from a roe deer (Capreolus capreolus). Two people experienced symptoms of abdominal pain, watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, and nausea. The parasitological examination of the roe deer revealed macrocysts of Sarcocystis sp. to the naked eye. Microscopic sarcocysts of Sarcocystis spp. were detected in different muscles, and a high sarcocyst load was observed in the roe deer muscles by a light microscope. Based on molecular results, S. capreolicanis, S. gracilis, S. linearis, S. oviformis, and

The state and perspectives for chemotherapy of cyst-forming and non-cyst-forming coccidia in humans and animals are summarized. In toxoplasmosis the therapeutic care of transplacental infections, which have gone out of control because of immunodeficiency, is in the forefront of attempts at improvement. Predominant drugs in use are pyrimethamine combined with a sulfonamide or with clindamycin, or trimethoprim plus sulfamethoxazole. For reasons of tolerability in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients, after 3 months of therapy a maintenance treatment on 2 days a week has recently

Sarcocysts of Sarcocystis odocoileocanis were found in tissue sections of hearts and tongues examined by light microscopy from 30 (88%) of 34 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). Hearts were infected less often (13 of 34, 38%) than were tongues (30 of 34, 88%). Sarcocysts of Sarcocystis odoi were not observed in the white-tailed deer examined. A gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) excreted sporocysts after consuming tongues of white-tailed deer infected with S. odocoileocanis. Two goats inoculated with either 50,000 or 500,000 sporocysts of S. odocoileocanis isolated from the gray fox d

The protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii is a serious cause of fetal mortality in sheep and goats. Oocysts, the parasite stage responsible for initiating infection, are produced following a primary infection in cats. A primary infection in pregnant sheep and goats can establish a placental and fetal infection which may result in fetal death and resorption, abortion or stillbirth. Diagnosis is aided by the clinical picture, the presence of characteristic small white necrotic foci in placental cotyledons, the possible presence of a mummified fetus and on fetal serology and histopathology. Intramural masses were resected from jejunum and ileocecal portion of a 49-year-old, female patient with partial gut obstruction. Histopathological examination indicated the masses to be tumorous eosinophilic enterocolitis. Recent and late development phases of Sarcocystis in relation to bradyzoite infection have been observed and considered to be responsible for eosinophilic inflammation. Concomitant intestinal actinomycosis, known to produce tumorous lesion without eosinophilia, appears as an attractive natural model in producing tumorous eosinophilic enterocolitis. Histological sections of tongues, esophagi, and diaphragms from 512 adult ewes from the northwest United States and Texas were examined for Sarcocystis spp. Sarcocysts were found in sections of 82.1% of 504 tongues, 44.4% of 478 esophagi, and 51.7% of 89 diaphragms. Sarcocystis tenella was the predominant species and was found in 430 (84.0%) sheep; S. arieticanis was found in 18 (3.5%) sheep. The mean number of S. tenella sarcocysts in tissue sections was approximately 10 times higher than that of S. arieticanis. The identification of S. arieticanis was confirmed by ultrastructural studies and

A generalized enlargement of the lymph nodes was found in an emaciated adult ewe. Additional autopsy findings included tiny grey-white necrotic foci in the heart muscle, aspiration pneumonia and diffuse pleuritis. Light microscopy showed a generalized lymphadenopathy with perilymphadenitis, depletion of lymphocytes and histiocytosis of the lymph node. In histiocytes and vascular endothelial cells of lymph nodes, septal capillary endothelium of lungs and capillary endothelium of myocardium, early stages of a protozoan parasite were found. In the myocardium, there were many foci of necrosis, som

Recent reports of Sarcocystis fayeri-induced toxicity in people consuming horse meat warrant investigation on the prevalence and molecular characterization of Sarcocystis spp. infection in horses. Sarcocysts in skeletal muscle of horses have been commonly regarded as an incidental finding. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of sarcocysts in skeletal muscle of horses with neuromuscular disease. Our findings indicated that S. fayeri infection was common in young mature horses with neuromuscular disease and could be associated with myopathic and neurogenic processes. The number of infe
