Laryngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma with Osteosarcomatous Differentiation and Involvement of Thyroid Cartilage Mimicking Sarcoma Arising from Thyroid Cartilage.

Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC) with a spindle cell component of the head and neck is an uncommon entity. In this case, we present a radiology-pathology correlation of a rare laryngeal BSCC with sarcomatous transformation and osteosarcomatous differentiation involving the laryngeal cartilage, which thus mimicked clinically and radiographically osteosarcoma or chondrosarcoma with calcification. Microscopic examination revealed predominantly BSCC with extensive osseous metaplasia among sheets and nests of basaloid tumor cells. There were also small foci of osteosarcoma, undifferentiated

Pure Erythroid Leukemia Mimicking Ewing Sarcoma/Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor in an Infant.

Pure erythroid leukemia (PEL) is a rare type of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with a very aggressive clinical course. Presentation as a myeloid/erythroid sarcoma is exceedingly rare. We describe an infantile PEL presenting as a multifocal myeloid sarcoma, clinically and pathologically mimicking Ewing sarcoma/PNET family of tumors. The patient died 8 weeks after the initial presentation due to widespread disease. Our case shows that PEL needs to be considered in the differential diagnosis of small round blue cell tumors in infancy. A meticulous workup including immunohistochemistry, flow cytomet

[Gastro-intestinal neuroectodermal tumor (GNET): A case report of a small intestine tumor with hepatic metastases].

The gastro-intestinal neuroectodermal tumor (GNET) is a rare sarcoma of the digestive tract, which was recently recognised. The knowledge of the morphological, immunohistochemical and molecular diagnostic criteria is necessary to not mistake it for the metastasis of a melanoma or for another sarcoma of the digestive tract as the gastro-intestinal clear cells sarcoma or the malignant peripheral nervous system tumor (MPNST). We report the case of a 41-year-old patient with a GNET of the small intestine with hepatic metastasis. The histological examination showed a diffuse proliferation of epithe

Immunohistochemistry of small round-cell tumors.

The term "small round-cell tumor" describes a group of highly aggressive malignant tumors composed of relatively small and monotonous undifferentiated cells with high nuclear to cytoplasmic ratios. This group includes Ewing's sarcoma (ES), peripheral neuroepithelioma (aka, primitive neuroectodermal tumor or extraskeletal ES), peripheral neuroblastoma ("classic-type"), rhabdomyosarcoma, desmoplastic small round-cell tumor, lymphoma, leukemia, small-cell osteosarcoma, small-cell carcinoma (either undifferentiated or neuroendocrine), olfactory neuroblastoma, cutaneous neuroendocrine carcinoma (ak

Metastatic High-Grade Endometrial Stromal Sarcoma with BCOR Translocation to the Pleural Fluid: A Case Report.

Sarcomas in cytology fluids are uncommon, accounting for an estimated 3-6% of malignant effusions. High-grade endometrial stromal sarcomas are uncommon malignancies, whose true frequency is not well defined. We present a case of high-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma with a BCOR translocation metastatic to the pleural fluid. A 31-year-old female with a long-standing history of abnormal uterine bleeding underwent needle core biopsy, which showed a high-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma with a BCOR translocation. In the months following her diagnosis, the patient underwent multiple cycles of che

"Cyst" on the forearm of a 28-year-old female: Case report of a CIC-rearranged sarcoma.

Capicua transcriptional repressor (CIC)-rearranged sarcomas are part of the group of Ewing-like sarcomas or atypical Ewing sarcomas which, thanks to the progress in molecular diagnosis, are being defined by particular genetic abnormalities separating this group into distinct entities with their own particular histological and immunohistochemical features, as well as different survival outcomes. We report the case of a healthy 28-year-old female presenting with a tender lesion on her forearm which after ultrasound examination was clinically favored to represent an infected sebaceous cyst. Cytohistological findings and diagnostic challenges in rare pediatric pulmonary mesenchymal malignancies: A report of two cases.

Pulmonary mesenchymal tumors are uncommon neoplasms and the data available on their clinical, cytohistomorphological, immunohistochemical, and molecular findings are limited, leading to difficulty in timely diagnosis and management. Case 1: A 12-year-old boy presented with a right endobronchial mass. Imprint smears from endobronchial biopsy revealed moderately pleomorphic spindle cell tumor arranged in fascicles and perivascular pattern with attached myxoid material showing occasional mitotic activity suggesting a cytological diagnosis of sarcoma. Biopsy also displayed similar morphology. Exte

Round Cell Sarcoma with EWSR1-PATZ1 Fusion in the Face of a Five-Year-Old Boy: Report of a Case with Unusual Histologic Features.

Round cell sarcomas with EWSR1-PATZ1 fusion are rare polyphenotypic sarcomas that typically show both neural and myogenic differentiation on immunohistochemistry. The histology features lobular admixture of cellular fascicles of relatively monotonous spindle cells and small blue round cells separated by fibrotic stroma. The clinical behavior of EWSR1-PATZ1 sarcoma is uncertain currently with mixed outcomes reported even in cases with metastases. We herein report an additional case of EWSR1-PATZ1 fusion-related round cell sarcoma in the face of a 5-year-old boy with unusual histologic features

Diagnostic utility of MIC-2 immunocytochemical staining in the differential diagnosis of small blue cell tumors.

Ewing's sarcoma (ES) and peripheral neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) are considered in the differential diagnosis of small round blue cell tumors of infancy and childhood which includes neuroblastoma, rhabdomyosarcoma and malignant lymphoma. Fine-needle aspiration diagnosis of these neoplasms can be particularly difficult when the neoplasms are composed of poorly differentiated cells or fail to produce a stroma. MIC-2 is a highly sensitive and specific marker for the PNET/ES group of neoplasms and has been studied extensively in surgical pathology. Other small blue cell neoplasms including rhabdom

Primary Sarcomas of the Larynx: A Clinicopathologic Study of 27 Cases.

Primary sarcomas of the larynx are rare and are associated with diagnostic and treatment challenges. Studies of these tumors are limited, and most examples have been reported as small series. To further increase our understanding of laryngeal sarcomas, we reviewed our experience of an adult cohort. A retrospective search for laryngeal sarcomas from our pathology archives and consultation files of one of the authors was performed. We studied 27 primary laryngeal sarcomas that included 25 males, and 2 females, with a mean age of 60 years (range 33-85). The cases included conventional chondrosarc

Multimodality Treatment in Ewing's Sarcoma Family Tumors of the Maxilla and Maxillary Sinus: Review of the Literature.

The Ewing sarcoma family of tumors (ESFT) encompasses a group of highly aggressive, morphologically similar, malignant neoplasms sharing a common spontaneous genetic translocation that affect mostly children and young adults. These predominantly characteristic, small round-cell tumors include Ewing's sarcoma of the bone and soft tissue, as well as primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) involving the bone, soft tissue, and thoracopulmonary region (Askin's tumor). Extraosseous ESFTs are extremely rare, especially in the head and neck region, where literature to date consists of sporadic case r

The role of molecular pathology in mediastinal sarcomas.

Mediastinal sarcomas represent rare neoplasms of mesenchymal origin. Most published data on mediastinal sarcomas is primarily derived from small series and case reports. Although rare, primary mediastinal sarcomas have a clinically aggressive course with worse 10-year survival rates than other types of mediastinal tumors, highlighting the importance of adequate diagnosis of these lesions. The diagnosis of mediastinal sarcomas is complicated by the varied histologic subtypes of tumors that can occur and which can sometimes display overlapping clinical, morphological, imaging, and immunohistoche

A Rare Case of Round Cell Sarcoma with CIC-DUX4 Mutation Mimicking a Phlegmon: Review of Literature.

BACKGROUND Undifferentiated small blue round cell sarcomas with CIC-DUX4 translocation differ morphologically and in clinical outcomes from other types of sarcoma. Although classified by the World Health Organization as undifferentiated sarcomas, it is unclear whether these tumors are variants of Ewing's sarcoma or a distinct entity. This report describes a round cell sarcoma with CIC-DUX4 translocation that presented clinically as a phlegmon. CASE REPORT A 31-year-old African American man presented with a mass in the right upper abdominal quadrant. Examination at a local hospital suggested an

Disseminated intrathoracic desmoplastic small round-cell tumor: a case report.

PURPOSE: Recently recognized as a distinct clinicopathologic entity, desmoplastic small round-cell tumors typically affect young men. These aggressive tumors usually arise in the abdomen; other sites of primary disease have been described only rarely. We report the case of an extraabdominal primary tumor with widespread dissemination, including the subcutaneous tissue, a previously unrecognized metastatic site. PATIENT AND METHODS: We describe the case of a 16-year-old boy with a primary extraabdominal metastatic desmoplastic small round-cell tumor. RESULTS: Our patient had a primary intrath

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma of mediastinum: a key role of radiotherapy in a multidisciplinary approach.

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma is a rare and aggressive tumor and its management is a major clinical challenge. Surgery is considered the mainstay of treatment and no adjuvant approach has demonstrated the ability to reduce the rate of relapses. We report on a case of a man with a 26-year clinical history of mediastinal follicular dendritic cell sarcoma, with several relapses after multiple surgical interventions. The impact of chemotherapy was very small, unlike the radiation therapy that was performed twice, with an interval time of 8 years, through an intensity-modulated technique and an

[Undifferentiated malignant round cell tumors of the sinonasal tract and nasopharynx].

Undifferentiated malignant round cell tumors of the sinonasal tract and nasopharynx comprise of aggressive malignant neoplasms with overlapping morphologic features, which yet are very different and can be identified as carcinoma, lymphoma, sarcoma, melanoma or olfactory neuroblastoma. Differentiating these tumors is important because their treatment and prognosis are quite different. Because of the limited initial biopsy tissue materials, major differential diagnostic difficulties may arise. The use of a panel of immunohistochemical markers and the identification, in some cases, of specific c

Development of a preclinical orthotopic xenograft model of ewing sarcoma and other human malignant bone disease using advanced in vivo imaging.

Ewing sarcoma and osteosarcoma represent the two most common primary bone tumours in childhood and adolescence, with bone metastases being the most adverse prognostic factor. In prostate cancer, osseous metastasis poses a major clinical challenge. We developed a preclinical orthotopic model of Ewing sarcoma, reflecting the biology of the tumour-bone interactions in human disease and allowing in vivo monitoring of disease progression, and compared this with models of osteosarcoma and prostate carcinoma. Human tumour cell lines were transplanted into non-obese diabetic/severe combined immunodefi

A rare cause of mechanical obstruction: Intestinal myeloid sarcoma.

Myeloid sarcoma is a rare aggressive tumour that originates from immature extramedullary myeloid cells. It can be seen as a relapse in patients with acute myeloid leukaemia. Sometimes it can be seen in the form of a solid tumour without any evidence of leukaemia. A case of a 44-year-old male patient who was admitted with symptoms and signs of mechanical intestinal bowel obstruction was operated on. The operation findings showed small bowel obstruction due to a mass. The mass was then resected with end-to-end intestinal anastomosis. The resected mass pathology results were consistent with myelo
