[Primary Pulmonary Synovial Sarcoma;Report of a Case].

A 66-year-old man was referred to our hospital for an abnormal shadow. Chest computed tomography (CT)showed a heterogeneous mass with well-defined border in the right S10and ipsilateral pleural effusion. Fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography(FDG-PET)showed the accumulation in the mass and pleural effusion. Right lower lobectomy with lymphnode dissection was performed for diagnosis and treatment. Histologically, the tumor was mainly composed of complicated spindle-shaped cells with extensive necrosis, showing a large number of nuclear fission images. Immunohistochemistry showed the tum

Metastatic synovial sarcoma of the scalp: Case report.

BACKGROUND: Synovial sarcoma is a malignant tumor of soft tissue that is rarely found in the head and neck. Even less common are metastasis within the head and neck. METHODS: We describe a case of a delayed metastatic synovial sarcoma to the scalp. A man who had been diagnosed and treated 16 years previously for monophasic synovial sarcoma of the groin, presented with a new scalp lesion confirmed to be metastatic monophasic synovial sarcoma. Wide local excision and sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) were performed and adjuvant radiation therapy was deferred. RESULTS: A positron emission tomog

Pericardial synovial sarcoma: challenges in diagnosis and management.

INTRODUCTION: Pericardial synovial sarcoma is an extremely rare tumor with poor prognosis. Timely diagnosis and aggressive multimodal management improves patient outcome. We present our experience of diagnosis and management of a young patient with monophasic synovial sarcoma arising from pericardium. CASE: A 27-year-old man presented with dyspnea and cough of three weeks duration. Examination revealed sinus tachycardia, distant heart sounds and elevated jugular venous pressure. Chest X-ray showed widened mediastinum. Transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) noted large pericardial effusion with ta

Poorly differentiated monophasic synovial sarcoma of the mediastinum.

Poorly differentiated synovial sarcoma is a diagnostically challenging neoplasm. Most commonly they occur in the soft tissue of the extremities and are rare in the mediastinum. They can be indistinguishable from other "round cell tumors" based on the morphology alone or at times by immunohistochemical studies. Here in, we report an extremely rare case of metastatic poorly differentiated monophasic synovial sarcoma of the mediastinum without a known primary in a 30-year-old man. The imaging studies on admission showed 10 × 9.5 cm anterior mediastinal mass with multiple nodules in the lung and p

Synovial sarcoma arising in the foot: case report.

Synovial sarcomas occur primarily in the soft tissue structures adjacent to the joints and tendons of the extremities. A diagnostic dilemma exists when the clinical presentation is similar to that of an infection or soft tissue trauma. We report a case of soft tissue sarcoma of the foot in a previously healthy 19-year-old male who presented after hitting his right foot against a refrigerator. Initial radiographs were negative; however, 6 weeks later plain radiographs revealed destruction of the metatarsals. Histologic analysis on a specimen obtained via fine-needle aspiration confirmed the dia

Thoracic-abdominal approach in primary pulmonary synovial sarcoma.

We report a case of primary synovial sarcoma of the lung. The patient was a 32-year-old male who presented with a mass in the right hemithorax invading the peritoneal cavity. The neoplasm was resected through a thoracic-abdominal approach. The patient is doing well 21 months after surgery. Within the last decade thoracic localizations of synovial sarcoma are an emerging histopathological entity thanks to the molecular analysis of the SYT-SSX fusion gene transcript.

[Synovial sarcoma of the hypopharynx - two case reports].

BACKGROUND: Synovial sarcoma is a rare soft tissue malignancy that most often occurs in the extremities of young adults. Approximately 3 % of these mesenchymal malignant tumors occur in the head and neck region. Up to now about 100 cases have been published. PATIENTS: We report on two cases of a synovial sarcoma of the hypopharynx. In the first case the patient died 3.5 years after beginning of therapy including all therapeutical efforts (surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy). The second patient with a synovial sarcoma of his left hypopharynx and a distant metastasis in his 8th thoracic verteb

Translocation t(X;18) in orofacial synovial sarcoma.

Cytogenetic analysis of a synovial sarcoma of the base of the tongue showed a reciprocal translocation involving chromosomes X and 18 [t(X;18)(p11.2;q11.2)]. This is a translocation recently reported to be characteristic of synovial sarcomas of the extremities. The histogenesis of synovial sarcoma is controversial. Our discovery of this translocation in an oral synovial sarcoma confirms the unity of origin of this neoplasm with the far more common synovial sarcomas of the extremity. Karyotypic analysis may prove useful in confirming the diagnosis of this uncommon neoplasm.

Retroperitoneal synovial sarcoma. A report of four cases.

Synovial sarcoma most commonly affects the extremities, especially the lower thigh and knee region; other primary sites, in contrast, have been only infrequently reported. Therefore, we undertook this study of four synovial sarcomas arising in the retroperitoneum. This group, whose ages ranged from 17-57 years (mean, 36 years), comprised three males and one female. The nonspecific clinical presentations consisted of pain and/or a mass; diverse preoperative radiographic procedures merely served to reinforce the impression of a retroperitoneal mass. Histologically, all four examples revealed a t

[Synovial sarcoma of the parotid gland: a case report].

Synovial sarcoma of the parotid gland is an extremely rare pathological entity, presenting as a particular form of synovial sarcoma of the cervicofacial region. This atypical localisation, linked to the absence of synovial tissue in this region, frequently complicates the differential diagnosis, notably with primary or secondary mesenchymal neoplasms and myoepitheliomas. We report the case of a 27-year-old patient presenting with a residual mass of the left parotid gland that appeared 6 years after exofacial parotidectomy for a confirmed synovial sarcoma. This work explores the clinical, patho

[A Case of Primary Synovial Sarcoma of the Abdominal Wall].

We report a case of a 51‒year‒old man who presented with right lower abdominal pain. On physical examination, a palpable, tender mass was detected in the right lower abdomen. Contrast‒enhanced computed tomography (CT) revealed a 15‒cm mass in the right lower abdominal wall, supplied by the right inferior epigastric artery, with internal hemorrhage and necrotic areas. Radiological findings were inconclusive for malignancy. As there was no evidence of distant metastasis or invasion into adjacent organs, the tumor was considered resectable, and surgical resection was performed. Histopathological

Effects of Adjuvant Radiotherapy in Patients With Synovial Sarcoma.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the treatment outcomes and the effects of adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) in patients with synovial sarcoma (SS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The medical records of 103 patients treated with definitive surgery for SS, with/without RT, from August 1982 to July 2013 were reviewed retrospectively. The median age of the patients was 33 years (range, 5 to 72 y). The most frequent tumor location was the extremities (79 patients, 77%). Seventy-five patients (73%) received adjuvant RT and 26 (25%) did not. The median dose of adjuvant RT was 61.2 Gy (range, 45 to 66.6 Gy). RESULTS: The m

[Two cases of synovial sarcoma in the head and neck].

Synovial sarcoma is a malignant soft tissue with unknown origin. Although head and neck region is the second common site of involvement, rare cases have been reported in Para nasal sinus and larynx. We presented two cases of synovial sarcoma, one of which arised from maxillary sinus and the other from laryx, and re- view the literature to sum up the diagnosis and treatment strategies. The conclusion is that synovial sarcoma in the head and neck still raises diagnostic and therapeutic issues. Surgical excision with wide margins is essential and necessary, usually associated radiotherapy. The ef

Primary synovial sarcoma of the mediastinum : a case report.

Synovial sarcomas commonly occur in the extremities of young adults. A primary occurrence in the mediastinum is very rare with only a few reported cases in the world literature. This paper is about a 42-year-old male who presented with chest pain and dyspnoea on exertion. Imaging showed an anterior mediastinal mass with adhesions to the lung. Pathological examination of the resected mass showed a biphasic neoplasm with a spindle cell component admixed with gland-like elements. The tumour showed positive staining with cytokeratin, epithelial membrane antigen, and Bcl-2 confirming the diagnosis

[Synovial sarcoma of the nasal cavity. A case report].

Synovial sarcoma is a rare tumour found in soft tissue; it is a mesenchymal spindle cell tumour that is not related to the synovial membrane. This tumour has a low incidence, the most frequent place of occurrence being the lower extremities in young adults. Synovial sarcoma of the head and neck accounts for 3-5% of sarcomas in this anatomical region. The treatment of choice for synovial sarcoma of the head and neck is complete surgical excision of the tumour mass followed by adjuvant radiotherapy.

Resected case of synovial sarcoma in the pleural cavity.

A 29-year-old female was admitted to our hospital complaining of severe dry cough and low-grade fever. A chest roentgenogram and a chest computed tomographic scan revealed a huge tumor and massive pleural effusion in the left pleural cavity. Pathological examination revealed spindle shaped malignant cells. SYT-SSX fusion gene transcripts were detected, so we diagnosed the tumor as a synovial sarcoma in the pleural cavity. After neoadjuvant chemotherapy we resected the tumor completely. A synovial sarcoma in the pleural cavity is extremely rare. To the best of our knowledge, this is the thirtee
