Religious scrupulosity and early maladaptive schemas: a network analysis.

Scrupulosity is treated as a particular presentation of the symptomatology characteristic for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, typical treatment of OCD (e.g. cognitive-behavioral therapy) is less effective in the case of religious scruples. Recently, schema therapy has appeared as an alternative effective treatment in obsessive-compulsive symptomatology. The present study investigated the associations between early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) and scrupulosity in a non-clinical sample of 376 poles. The participants assessed their EMSs with the Young Schema Questionnaire 3 - Short Fo

Sources of emotional maltreatment and the differential development of unconditional and conditional schemas.

Schema theory posits that experiences of maltreatment result in the early development of maladaptive schemas (EMS; Young, Klosko, & Weishaar, 2003, Schema therapy: A practitioner's guide, The Guilford Press: New York, NY). EMS are organized by conditionality; unconditional schemas are theorized to develop early in childhood predominantly in response to experiences of parenting and conditional schemas are theorized to develop later in life in response to other relationships. Despite this distinction, minimal previous research has investigated their differential development. The current study ex

Schema Modes and Personality Disorder Symptoms in Alcohol-Dependent and Cocaine-Dependent Patients.

Substance use disorders (SUD) and personality disorders co-occur frequently. This relationship might be understood by studying schema modes (a key concept in Schema therapy), which explain the dysfunctions characterizing personality disorder patients. In the present study, we compared the schema modes and personality disorder symptoms between alcohol-dependent patients, cocaine-dependent patients and healthy controls. We found indications that specific schema modes are specific for SUD patients. However, no differences between specific subtypes of SUD patients (alcohol- vs. cocaine-dependent p

Early maladaptive schemas in convicted sexual offenders: preliminary findings.

Core cognitive schemas may play a role in the vulnerability for sexual offending. Identifying these schemas could help to conceptualize sexual crimes and rehabilitate convicted sexual offenders. The aim of this preliminary study was to explore the relationship between early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) and sexual offending, as well as how rapists and child sex molesters differ in terms of these schemas. Thirty-two men convicted for rape, 33 convicted for child sexual abuse, and 30 non-offenders were evaluated using the Young Schema Questionnaire (YSQ-S3) and the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI). Re

Assessing schema modes for eating disorders and their association with personality traits: validation of the English version of the short form of the schema modes inventory for eating disorders (EN-SMI-ED-SF).

BACKGROUND: Schema Therapy is an integrative psychotherapy model with a growing evidence base in the successful treatment of eating disorders (ED). To specifically assess schema modes in ED, the Schema Mode Inventory for Eating Disorders - Short Form (SMI-ED-SF) was developed but its English adaptation is still lacking. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to evaluate the psychometric properties of the English version of the SMI-ED-SF (EN-SMI-ED-SF) within a community sample and to explore its relationship with ED conditions and personality traits. METHOD: An observational design was used, re

The prediction of treatment outcomes by early maladaptive schemas and schema modes in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Higher levels of early maladaptive schemas (EMS) and schema modes according to schematherapy by Jeffrey Young are present in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) compared to healthy controls. This study examines the relationship of EMS and schema modes to OC symptom severity and the predictive value of EMS and schema modes on treatment outcome in inpatients receiving Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). The main assumption was a negative association between the EMS of the domain 'disconnection' and dysfunctional coping and parent schema mod

Dysfunctional schema modes as determinants of psychiatric comorbidities: a study in a cohort of people with epilepsy.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Symptomatology of epilepsy and its' associated alteration in brain processes, stigma of experiencing seizures, and adverse sequelae of anti-epileptics have been demonstrated to impact behaviour and exacerbate psychopathology. This study examines the role of dysfunctional schema modes in People with Epilepsy (PWE) and their association with psychiatric symptoms. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 108 PWE treated with anti-epileptics for at least one year and with no history or mental disorder or psycho-active substance use. Validation of the greek version of the Young Schema Questionnaire-Short Form 3: Internal consistency reliability and validity.

Schema therapy (ST) is an integrative therapy, which combines elements of cognitive behavior therapy, attachment theory, object relations theory and emotional-focused models. Schema therapy is an effective treatment for patients with personality disorders and other chronic psychological disorders. Early Maladaptive Schemas (EMSs) are a main concept in schema theory referring to self-defeating, core themes or patterns. They develop as a result of traumatic or toxic childhood experiences and the frustration of the core emotional needs in childhood. To date 18 EMSs have been identified and groupe

Positive Schemas: Replication, Associations With Negative Schemas, and the Dark Triad.

The purpose of the current study was to replicate the factor structure of the 14 positive schemas identified in the earlier study by Louis et al. (2018). Using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and Multi-group CFA, the 14 positive schemas were found to be robust across four new non-clinical English-speaking community samples - USA (n = 396), South Africa (n = 390), Nigeria (n = 364), and India (n = 306). Further, results from CFA, and chi square tests showed that positive and negative schemas were independent but related constructs, and that they do not reflect bipolarity. Using hierarchical

Early maladaptive schemas in episodic and chronic migraine in adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Psychotherapies, such as schema therapy, are receiving increasing attention in the management of pediatric headaches. The purpose of this study was to investigate early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) in adolescents with episodic migraine (EM) and chronic migraine (CM). METHODS: This clinic-based, cross-sectional study consisted of 167 adolescents, aged 12-18, who were diagnosed with EM (n = 140) and CM (n = 27). The clinical characteristics of migraine, its accompanying symptoms, EMSs, the interrelationship of EMSs, depression, and anxiety were evaluated. We specifically analyzed ps

How the unconscious mind controls body movements: Body schema distortion in anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Besides all visible somatic manifestations, distorted body representation is a key symptom for anorexia nervosa (AN). Body representation can be divided into a conscious component, body image, and an unconscious action-related one, body schema. As behavioral studies already explored the impact of a distorted body image in AN, we aimed to explore whether distortion also extends into unconscious body schema. This study is the first with an unbiased measurement of the body schema in a homogeneous sample of AN patients. METHOD: Twenty-three patients diagnosed with AN and 23 healthy con

Personality disorder traits, maladaptive schemas, modes and coping styles in participants with complex dissociative disorders, borderline personality disorder and avoidant personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The schema mode model offers a new conceptualisation of complex dissociative disorders (CDD) as it explains shifts between identities as shifts between schema modes. Furthermore, in this model CDD is conceived as personality pathology, incorporating core features of personality disorders. This study tested the assumptions of this schema mode model of CDD. METHOD: Questionnaires measuring personality disorder traits, schemas, schema modes and coping styles were filled out by patients with CDD, borderline personality disorder and avoidant personality disorder (N = 210), and their sco

Metaverse as a possible tool for reshaping schema modes in treating personality disorders.

Personality disorders (PD) are usually treated with face-to-face sessions and/or digital mental health services. Among many schools of therapies, schema therapy stands out because rather than simply targeting the symptoms of PD, it cordially targets the cause of PD and heals the early maladaptive schema, thus is exceptionally good at soothing emotional disturbances before enacting cognitive restructuring, resulting in long-term efficacy. However, according to Piaget's genetic epistemology, the unmet needs lie in the fact that the schemata that determine the adaptive behavior can only be formed

Anger and psychological symptoms relationship: mediator role of maladaptive schemas.

Trait anger is the strong predictor of various psychological symptoms like anxiety, depression, and hostility. Explaining how and why this relationship occurs is crucial to come up with more effective prevention and intervention strategies in the field. To this end, the current study aimed to reveal the mediating effect of early maladaptive schemas, which is the basic concept of schema therapy, on the relations of trait anger and psychological symptoms. Data was collected from 301 university students by using the measurement tools of Brief Symptom Inventory, Trait Anger Scale and Young Schema

[Examination of the Young maladaptive schemes in a group of Gamblers Anonymous].

BACKGROUND: Literature of gambling addiction has become widespread in last years. Many studies were written about the vulnerability factors helping the development of addiction, theoretical models, comorbid problems and therapy possibilities. Currently there is no integrated theoretical model that could explain sufficiently the development and maintenance of pathological gambling. The treatment issue is also unresolved. Cognitive psychology is a dynamically developing field of psychology and good results are achieved in gambling treatment with applying cognitive techniques. Jeffrey Young's sch

Cognitive representations in alcohol and opiate abuse: the role of core beliefs.

There are clinical indications that alcohol and drug abuse are associated with unhealthy core beliefs (unconditional, schema-level representations). This study examined levels of such cognitions among four groups: alcohol abusers; opiate abusers; combined alcohol and opiate abusers; and a non-clinical group. Each patient completed the short version of the Young Schema Questionnaire, measuring levels of 15 pathological core beliefs. These schema-level cognitions were less healthy in the clinical groups than in the non-clinical group, particularly among individuals who abused alcohol. These find

Relationships Between Early Maladaptive Schemas and Emotional States in Individuals With Sexual Convictions.

This study seeks to add to the existing knowledge and available literature on schema therapy elements in forensic inpatient samples. Early maladaptive schemas and emotional states were assessed in Dutch individuals with sexual convictions and compared to individuals with nonsexual violent convictions. Self-ratings of the Young Schema Questionnaire and the Schema Mode Inventory of 95 patients with either convictions for child sexual abuse (N = 30), sexual violence against adults (N = 34), and nonsexual violent convictions (N = 31) were examined using one-way multivariate ANOVAs. Schemas and modes in borderline personality disorder: The mistrustful, shameful, angry, impulsive, and unhappy child.

In this study we investigated how early maladaptive schemas and schema modes uniquely characterize Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) patients versus comparison groups. BPD patients (n = 101) were systematically matched with personality disordered patients without BPD (n = 101) and healthy controls (n = 101). Differences were investigated using one-way ANOVA and multinomial logistic regression analyses. Results indicated that schemas of Mistrust/Abuse and Defectiveness/Shame along with modes of Angry Child, Impulsive Child, and (low) Happy Child uniquely differentiated BPD patients from pat
