Huntington's disease: advocacy driving science.

My mother, Leonore, was diagnosed with Huntington's disease (HD) in 1968 at age 53. I was 23, my sister Alice 26, and our father, Milton Wexler, 60 years old. The same year, our father created the Hereditary Disease Foundation (HDF), dedicated to finding treatments and cures for HD. HD is an autosomal dominant, neurodegenerative disorder. Alice and I each have a 50% chance of inheriting and dying from the disorder. Over the past 43 years, we have been proud to change the face of science. Through Milton Wexler Interdisciplinary Workshops, judicious funding, and focusing on innovation and creati

Particle Analysis in Forensic Science.

Microscopic trace evidence includes particles from many sources such as biologicals, soil, building materials, metals, explosives, gunshot residues, and cosmetics. The particles are identified by morphological analysis, microscopy, and chemical analysis. Their identity is confirmed by comparison with reference materials or other comparison samples. The probative value of particles of forensic interest depends on their nature and the circumstances of their presence.

Basic science & translational research in cystic fibrosis - insights from the 20th ECFS basic science conference.

The development of CFTR modulators revolutionized the approach to treating Cystic Fibrosis (CF) by targeting the ion channel that causes the disease rather than just the symptoms. For those people with CF who have access and good responses to modulators, their day-to-day health, quality and quantity of life continue to improve. But there are still many people with CF unable to tolerate these medicines, and/or without access, ineligible due to their CF genotype, cost, or lack of approval in their home country. There is a lot more basic science and translational research to be done until the mis

Editorial: When more science is not enough - rethinking the 'translational dividend' of clinical psychological science.

To broaden and diversify the perspectives and experiences informing the editorial work for this journal, 27 affiliate editors have joined the ranks of the editorial board since 2023. They each work together with one of the 20 joint editors. As an early-career scientist practitioner who sees both papers as well as patients (Dagan) and a late-career scientist seeing papers only (Schuengel), we have worked together in handling submissions within the broad domain of clinically relevant research on young people and their families. Our editorial dialogue picks up on an earlier editorial, raising the

Perceptions of science, science communication, and climate change attitudes in 68 countries - the TISP dataset.

Science is integral to society because it can inform individual, government, corporate, and civil society decision-making on issues such as public health, new technologies or climate change. Yet, public distrust and populist sentiment challenge the relationship between science and society. To help researchers analyse the science-society nexus across different geographical and cultural contexts, we undertook a cross-sectional population survey resulting in a dataset of 71,922 participants in 68 countries. The data were collected between November 2022 and August 2023 as part of the global Many L

New visual culture of science: analysis of graphical abstracts in the life science journal "Cell".

Driven by the shift towards online journal publishing, many academic journals have introduced graphical abstracts (GAs) since the 2000s to convey the primary findings of research papers. This study investigated this visual culture in life sciences by analyzing GAs with focus on content, representation, and background. In total, 333 GAs were collected from articles published in the journal Cell in 2021 and analyzed. Among these, 295 GAs (88.6%) explained the results and models and succinctly presented the key findings, and 251 GAs (75.4%) used a layout that divided the area into two or more sec

Scientific realism, scientific practice, and science communication: An empirical investigation of academics and science communicators.

We argue that the societal consequences of the scientific realism debate, in the context of science-to-public communication are often overlooked and careful theorizing about it needs further empirical groundwork. As such, we conducted a survey experiment with 130 academics (from physics, chemistry, and biology) and 137 science communicators. We provided them with an 11-item questionnaire probing their views of scientific realism and related concepts. Contra theoretical expectations, we find that (a) science communicators are generally more inclined towards scientific antirealism when compared

The costs of partner engagement in research: Opportunities for pragmatic research, implementation science, and the science of engagement.

There is growing emphasis on the importance of active partner engagement in research and the design, planning, and implementation of new programs. Indeed, the science of engagement is gaining is receiving more attention from researchers, being formally included in research studies more often, and increasingly being required by funders. Financial costs and economic implications are well-known drivers of successful adoption, implementation, and sustainment of evidence-based programs; however, partner engagement costs are often excluded from economic evaluations even when elements of engagement m

The science of reading meets the science of learning: memory systems, structured literacy, and the role of AI.

As terms like the Science of Reading and Science of Learning gain prominence in education policy and practice, there is a growing need to clarify what learning entails at a cognitive systems level. In this perspective review, we argue that meaningful instructional practice, particularly in the context of artificial intelligence (AI), must align with the distinct yet interacting memory systems that support human learning across development. Drawing on cognitive science, neuroscience, and educational psychology research, we provide a functional overview of implicit and explicit memory systems an

A Journey in Science: Molecular vaccines for global child health in troubled times of anti-science.

My scientific life in translational medicine runs in two parallel, yet often converging paths. The first, is four-decade-long commitment to develop new vaccines for parasitic and neglected tropical diseases, as well as pandemic threats. This includes a vaccine for human hookworm infection that I began as an MD-PhD student in New York City in the 1980s, and a new low-cost COVID vaccine that reached almost 100 million people in low- and middle-income countries. Alongside this life in scientific research, is one in public engagement for vaccine and neglected disease diplomacy to ensure that peopl

[Pandemics, Politics and Science: the Role of Science and Scientifics for the Solution of the COVID-19 Pandemic Conflicts].

The public health crisis caused by COVID-19 disease has bring again to the public arena the old debate of the role in decision-making process of politics and science. In this paper we analyze, in the context of the current pandemics, how politics has left a stellar role for science, either because science has anticipated in its proposals to politics, or because politics has opted for it as a premeditated strategy. The references to the opinion of scientists as a decision-making criterion or, furthermore, their presence as true spokesmen for authority have been so frequent. This means rediscove

The fate of a progressive science: the Harvard Fatigue Laboratory, athletes, the science of work and the politics of reform.

In the early twentieth century, fatigue research marked a site of conflicting scientific, industrial, and cultural understandings of working bodies. Many fatigue researchers understood fatigue to be a physiological fact and allied themselves with Progressive-era reformers in urging industrial regulation. Reformers clashed with advocates of Taylorism, who held that productivity could be perpetually increased through managerial efficiency. Histories of this conflict typically cease with the end of the First World War. I examine the work of the Harvard Fatigue Laboratory in the 1920s and 1930s to

Science disconnected: the translational gap between basic science, clinical trials, and patient care in Alzheimer's disease.

Both research and clinical practice have traditionally centred on the dementia syndrome of Alzheimer's disease rather than its preclinical and prodromal stages. However, there is a strong scientific and ethical impetus to shift focus to earlier disease stages to improve brain health outcomes and help to keep affected individuals symptom-free (dementia-free) for as long as possible. We provide an overview of recent advancements in early detection, drug development, and trial methodology that should be utilised in the development of new therapies for use in brain health clinics. We propose a tri

Insights into basic science: what basic science can teach us about iron homeostasis in trauma patients.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review summarizes recent basic science studies on homeostasis of iron, an essential dietary nutrient and potentially toxic metal, and explores the relevance of these studies to our understanding of trauma and related severe, acute events. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies in experimental models of iron homeostasis have added to our understanding of how iron levels are regulated in the body and how iron levels and iron-dependent biological processes contribute to trauma and related events. Iron deficiency, a common nutritional disorder, can impair critical organ function

Artificial intelligence is starting to automate scientific discovery, raising the prospect of an automated science of the mind. We chart this field around four challenges: representing experiments, generating synthetic behavior, synthesizing models, and closing the loop to discover psychological theories.
