Sepsis-related myocardial injury: the role of bacterial pathogens and toxins-a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Sepsis-related myocardial injury is common in sepsis patients and has been repeatedly associated with poor patient outcomes. While experimental animal studies suggest that direct and indirect myocardial damage occurs via a wide range of inflammatory mediators, including bacterial toxins, the extent of bacterial-driven myocardial injury in human sepsis remains unclear. This scoping review aims to map existing evidence, identify knowledge gaps and guide future research priorities. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This scoping review will follow the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for sco

Management and outcomes of fractures over cranial venous sinuses: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Fractures over venous sinuses (FOVSs) are associated with difficulties in diagnosis and treatment resulting in a high level of morbidity and mortality. Despite its importance, there are limited aggregate data to guide the management of these fractures ultimately inflicting a major callenge to neurosurgeons. This protocol describes the methodology of a scoping review that aims to synthesise contemporary evidence on the management and outcomes of FOVSs. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The proposed study will be conducted in accordance with the Arksey and O'Malley's framework for scoping rev

Optimizing classroom environments for visually impaired school children a scoping review protocol.

Creating a universal and supportive learning environment is essential for the holistic education development of visually impaired school children. However, inadequate infrastructure, limited access to specialized tools, and a shortage of skilled teachers may contribute to lower self-confidence and academic performance. This underscores the necessity for specific guidelines and recommendations to address an optimal classroom setting that is tailored to their visual needs. In this paper, a scoping review protocol is introduced, utilizing the framework proposed by Arksey and O'Malley (2005), to a

Delirium in neonates and infants: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Delirium in neonates and infants is difficult to screen or assess because of their different developmental features and distinct delirium characteristics compared with those of older children. Some delirium management strategies, including assessment, pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions, and prevention strategies, have been previously suggested for paediatric delirium. However, whether these strategies are effective for delirium in neonates and infants is unclear. This scoping review aims to explore comprehensive information on delirium in neonates and infants,

Non-pharmaceutical interventions and epigenetic aging in adults: Protocol for a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Aging is the strongest risk factor for most chronic diseases. The rising burden of an aging population and non-communicable diseases (NCDs), contributes to escalating costs for society. Several non-pharmaceutical interventions can lower the risk of NCDs, including common mental disorders (CMDs), and may slow down biological aging, as evidenced by outcome markers such as epigenetic clocks. However, a comprehensive overview of whether and which non-pharmaceutical interventions may impact human epigenetic aging is missing. Synthesizing evidence of interventions on epigenetic aging t

Interventions to enhance corporate sector engagement in tuberculosis response in Africa: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis (TB) is a significant public health crisis in Africa. TB control programmes implemented by various state and non-state actors in different African countries over the years have recorded significant gains in the reduction of the incidence and prevalence of TB through the vehicle of private care provider engagement in the diagnosis, treatment and care. However, the corporate sector, which often represents a large pool of resources and access to individuals, is neglected or underestimated in the public-private mix of TB control efforts. Employees, clients and suppliers

Characterising the speech phenotype in individuals with craniofacial microsomia: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Asymmetric mandibular hypoplasia, microtia, tongue and laryngeal anomalies, and soft palate and facial nerve dysfunction are clinical features observed in children with craniofacial microsomia (CFM). Despite involvement of all these structures in hearing and speech, there is limited evidence reporting speech outcomes in this population. Systematic reviews of clinical and surgical interventions related to CFM have been published, but no methodological review of speech outcomes exists. This scoping review will summarise what is known about speech production in individuals with CFM

Service-level barriers to and facilitators of access to services for the treatment of alcohol use disorder and problematic alcohol use: protocol for a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, substance use health services for treatment of alcohol use disorder and problematic alcohol use (AUD/PAU) were fragmented and challenging to access. The pandemic magnified system weaknesses, often resulting in disruptions of treatment as alcohol use during the pandemic rose. When treatment services were available, utilisation was often low for various reasons. Virtual care was implemented to offset the drop in in-person care, however accessibility was not universal. Identification of the characteristics of treatment services for AUD/PAU that impact

Protocol for a scoping review of sepsis epidemiology.

INTRODUCTION: Sepsis is a common, life-threatening syndrome of physiologic, pathologic, and biochemical abnormalities that are caused by infection and propagated by a dysregulated immune response. In 2017, the estimated annual incidence of sepsis around the world was 508 cases per 100,000 (95% confidence interval [CI], 422-612 cases per 100,000), however, reported incidence rates vary significantly by country. A scoping review will identify knowledge gaps by systematically investigating the incidence of sepsis. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This scoping review will be guided by the updated JBI (forme

Rehabilitation Programs for Bedridden Patients with Prolonged Immobility: A Scoping Review Protocol.

Bedridden patients usually stay in bed for long periods, presenting several motor problems caused by immobility, such as reductions in muscle mass, bone mineral density and physical impairment, resulting in a long recovery process. Thus, identifying physical rehabilitation programs for bedridden patients with prolonged immobility is a matter of urgent research for a solution that will help health professionals and stakeholders to develop more adjusted programs and identify possible gaps. To date, no previous scoping reviews addressing this purpose have been found. This scoping review will be g

Quality of life and well-being from the perspective of patients on opioid agonist maintenance treatment: study protocol for a systematic review of qualitative research and a scoping review of measures.

BACKGROUND: Opioid agonist maintenance treatment (OAMT) is a first-line treatment for heroin dependence, but its effectiveness has been assessed primarily through clinical outcomes with a limited attention to patient perspectives. Despite the increased use of patient reported outcome measures their patient-centeredness is highly questionable. This is the protocol of a systematic review of qualitative research on how OAMT users construct the meaning of their quality of life and well-being and a scoping review of instruments that measure these domains. METHODS: We will conduct a systematic revi

Patient-perspective evidence on the acceptability, usability, and everyday impact of relative motion orthoses in adult hand rehabilitation: A scoping review protocol.

Relative motion orthoses (RM orthoses) are finger-based orthoses used in adult hand rehabilitation to protect healing structures or optimist movement patterns while permitting active hand use. Existing reviews have mapped RM-orthosis indications, configuration, and clinical outcomes, and the most recent has begun to incorporate patient-experience findings; however, patient-perspective evidence has not yet been mapped as the primary object of a synthesis, organised against defined dimensions of acceptability, usability, and everyday impact. The objective of this scoping review is to map the ext

Cost analysis of corneal tissue processing: A scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Diseases affecting the cornea are a group of pathological conditions responsible for the main causes of blindness worldwide. Corneal transplantation aims to replace dysfunctional corneal tissue with a transparent tissue graft obtained from a deceased donor, which enables the full recovery of lost vision. Processes are initially performed to prepare the corneal tissue for transplantation in order for this transplant to be viable. There is a gap in knowledge regarding the costs of these processes. This review aims to carry out a robust, broad and current mapping of studies which an
