This study aimed to evaluate the cytotoxic effects of jellyfish venoms on two different colon cancer cell lines and to compare their activity with that observed in a healthy colon cell line used as a control. Venoms were isolated from specimens of Aurelia aurita, Rhopilema nomadica, and Anemonia sulcata collected in their natural habitats. BACKGROUND: The cosmopolitan moon jelly Aurelia is characterized by high degrees of morphological and ecological plasticity, and subsequently by an unclear taxonomic status. The latter has been revised repeatedly over the last century, dividing the genus Aurelia in as many as 12 or as little as two species. Envenomation by the Irukandji jellyfish (Carukia barnesi) can result in an array of systemic symptoms known as Irukandji syndrome. In 1996, 62 people presented to Cairns emergency departments with Irukandji envenomation: 57 developed systemic symptoms, and 38 required parenteral narcotics. All patients were discharged home within 24.5 hours, except for two who required high-dependence care for pulmonary oedema. During the summer, jellyfish stings are the most common envenomation situations encountered by humans in the marine environment. The more people swim, scuba dive, or snorkel, the more necessary it is to know what should be done immediately, how life can be saved, how to prevent early and late complications, and how to facilitate convalescence in the event of jellyfish envenomation. We describe an atypical case of a 14-year-old boy with severe dyspnea due to upper airway obstruction caused by a jellyfish sting to the face and outline a practical approach to the treatment of jellyfish stings.

The box jellyfish (sea wasp) Carybdea alata Reynaud, 1830 (Cubozoa) is distributed widely in the tropics. The sting of C. alata causes severe pain and cutaneous inflammation in humans. We successfully isolated C. alata toxin-A (CaTX-A, 43 kDa) and -B (CaTX-B, 45 kDa) for the first time from the tentacle of C. alata collected at a site along the Hawaiian shore. Injuries from animals are very common, but fortunately deaths are rare. Few studies, however, have evaluated human deaths due to both venomous and nonvenomous animals. Utilizing the Medical Examiner's Data Base, this study examines deaths due to venomous and nonvenomous wild and domestic animals in North Carolina. During 1972-1989, there were 92 deaths reported. BACKGROUND: Corneal stings from the sea nettle (Chrysaora quinquecirrha) indigenous to the Chesapeake Bay are usually painful but self-limited injuries, with resolution in 24 to 48 hours.

Stinging jellyfish outbreaks represent a health hazard, causing contact dermatitis and systemic reactions. This study investigated the epidemiology, severity, and treatment protocols of jellyfish stings in a coastal area with high tourist development and frequent stinging jellyfish outbreaks of the central Mediterranean (Salento, Southern Italy), and the associated costs for the Italian National Health Service. In 2007-2011, 1,733 bathers (mostly children and females) sought medical assistance following jellyfish stings, the main cause of human pathologies due to contact with marine organisms.
