Seaweeds are being consumed more often worldwide and are a source of essential minerals, fiber, vitamins, amino acids, and various bioactive compounds that have many beneficial effects on human health. However, marine pollution and the high capacity of seaweed to absorb metals may mean this food can also be dangerous to human health. The concentrations of some trace elements (B, Ba, Fe, Ni, Li, and V) and toxic metals (Al, Cd, and Pb) were determined in various species of wild seaweeds in the Phaeophyta group of brown algae from the Atlantic Ocean. Seaweed-derived polysaccharides-fucoidan, laminarin, alginates, ulvan, and carrageenan-are often described as promising prebiotics with potential to influence the gut-liver-brain axis. Resistant to upper gastrointestinal digestion, they reach the colon where gut microbiota ferment them into metabolites, chiefly short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). These metabolites in turn modulate intestinal barrier integrity, immune and metabolic homeostasis, and inter-organ signaling. However, a critical caveat is that each polysaccharide type exhibits substantial structural variability in molecular weight, deg

Naturally occurring inhibitors of membrane-bound enzymes offer therapeutic potential for metabolic disorders such as obesity and fatty liver disease. Sphingomyelin synthase (SMS), which converts ceramide to sphingomyelin, is a promising target in this regard. In this study, cis-9-docosenoic acid (9Z-DSA) was identified from the dietary seaweed Hizikia fusiformis (hijiki) as a natural SMS inhibitor. Inhibition assays using HeLa cell lysates expressing SMS1 and SMS2 a reliable model for membrane enzyme studies were analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The nonpolar hexane

Low-carbon secondary effluent presents significant challenges for effective nitrogen removal due to limited available organic carbon. In this study, a laboratory-scale microbial system integrating a polysaccharide-based external carbon source (MP) with the nitrate-assimilating bacterium Enterobacter hormaechei EN-1 was developed to enhance aerobic nitrogen removal. The tested co-culture model increased total nitrogen removal efficiency from 63.46% to 85.86%. In batch tailwater microcosms, MP supplementation combined with EN-1 inoculation improved nitrate transformation and nitrogen removal. In

Seaweed consumption in Asian food cultures may benefit longevity and age-related conditions like sarcopenia with aging. However, sarcopenia lacks a definitive treatment, and pharmaceutical options have limitations in efficacy and safety. Recent studies on aging female mice found that Ishige okamurae (IO), a brown algae, and its active compound diphloroethohydroxycarmalol improved sarcopenia. Further research is needed to understand the effects of seaweed consumption on sarcopenia in humans. This clinical trial divided participants into a test group (receiving 500 mg/kg IO supplementation, mean

Compounds were isolated from Ecklonia stolonifera Okamura, a marine brown alga widely consumed as food. Among the isolated compounds, 974-A was demonstrated for the first time to be a potent competitive inhibitor of mushroom tyrosinase activity towards l-tyrosine and l-DOPA (IC50 values = 1.57 ± 0.08 and 3.56 ± 0.22 µM, respectively). Molecular docking simulations clarified that the hydroxyl residues of the isolated compounds formed hydrogen bonds with residues at the catalytic and allosteric sites of tyrosinase, while other residues participated in hydrophobic interactions. Moreover, 974-A, p

Single laboratory validation of a method for arsenic speciation analysis in seafood and seaweed is presented. The method is based on stepwise extraction of water-soluble and non-polar arsenic with hot water and a mixture of dichloromethane and methanol, respectively. While the water-soluble arsenicals were speciated by anion and cation exchange liquid chromatography inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LC-ICP-MS), the non-polar arsenicals were collectively determined by ICP-MS after digestion in acid. The performance characteristics and broad application of the method were evaluated b

Seaweeds present a wide variety of interesting bioactive molecules. In the present work we evaluated the biological activity of the dichloromethane/methanol (2:1) extract (DME) from the brown seaweed Dictyota mertensii against Leishmania amazonensis and its cytotoxic potential on mammalian cells. The extract showed significant inhibitory effect on the growth of promastigote forms (IC50=71.60 μg/mL) and low toxicity against mammalian cells (CC50=233.10 μg/mL). The DME was also efficient in inhibiting the infection in macrophages, with CC50 of 81.4 μg/mL and significantly decreased the survival

In 2010 the European Commission placed a limit on the amount of free formaldehyde in carrageenan and processed Eucheuma seaweed (PES) of 5 mg kg(-1). Formaldehyde is not used in carrageenan and PES processing and accordingly one would not expect free formaldehyde to be present in carrageenan and PES. However, surprisingly high levels up to 10 mg kg(-1) have been found using the generally accepted AOAC and Hach tests. These findings are, per proposed reaction pathways, likely due to the formation of formaldehyde when sulphated galactose, the backbone of carrageenan, is hydrolysed with the stron
