Levels and Patterns of Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior in Adults With and Without Down Syndrome.

Previous studies have reported that adults with Down syndrome (DS) may perform less physical activity (PA) and more sedentary behavior (SB) than adults without DS (non-DS). We investigated differences in PA and SB profiles between DS and non-DS when utilizing newly developed population-specific activity-intensity cut points. Ninety adults (DS: 40; non-DS: 50) had PA and SB measured by accelerometry. Data were scored with cut points for DS and non-DS. Results from 2 × 2 (Condition × Sex) analysis of covariance indicated adults with DS had less sedentary but more moderate to vigorous PA (MVPA) t

Association of sedentary behavior with atrial fibrillation-related biomarkers in a population with overweight or obesity.

BACKGROUND: Blood biomarkers can characterize the atrial substrate, helping to elucidate mechanisms of atrial fibrillation (AF) development. Understanding whether sedentary behavior affects AF-related biomarkers is key for future prevention strategies. METHODS: We studied 252 participants in PREDIMED-Plus, a multicenter randomized trial in Spain for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease. A wrist-worn accelerometer was used to measure physical activity (PA) in a week at baseline and at least once during follow-up at years 3 and 5. Blood samples were collected at each time point to m

Effects of Interrupting Children's Sedentary Behaviors With Activity on Metabolic Function: A Randomized Trial.

CONTEXT: Limited data suggest that interrupting sedentary behaviors with activity improves metabolic parameters in adults. OBJECTIVE: We tested whether interrupting sitting with short, moderate-intensity walking bouts improved glucose tolerance in children. DESIGN: Participants underwent two experimental conditions in random order on different days: continuous sitting for 3 hours or sitting interrupted by walking (3 min of moderate-intensity walking every 30 min). Insulin, C-peptide, glucose, and free fatty acids were measured every 30 minutes for 3 hours during an oral glucose tolerance tes

Are sedentary television watching and computer use behaviors associated with anxiety and depressive disorders?

Sedentary behaviors may be more common among persons with mental disorders and thereby result in poorer health outcomes. This study examined whether independently of general physical activity level, mental disorders are linked to two important examples of sedentary behavior: computer use and watching television. We used cross-sectional data from The Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA). Our study sample consisted of 2353 participants (age 18-65) of whom 1701 had a current anxiety and/or depressive diagnosis and 652 were healthy controls. Anxiety and depression diagnoses were con

Sedentary behavior type matters: compositional analysis of 24-hour movement behaviors and cognitive function in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Sleep, sedentary behaviors (SB) and physical activity are independently associated with cognitive function in older adults, yet the joint relationship of these 24-hour movement behaviors with cognitive function is less well studied. Additionally, the association between SB and cognitive function may differ depending on whether SB is mentally active or inactive. This study aimed to examine the associations between 24-hour movement behavior compositions and cognitive function in older adults, explore the differential associations of different sedentary behavior (SB) types with cognit

Using Internet of Things to Reduce Office Workers' Sedentary Behavior: Intervention Development Applying the Behavior Change Wheel and Human-Centered Design Approach.

BACKGROUND: Sedentary behavior (SB) is associated with various adverse health outcomes. The prevalence of prolonged sitting at work among office workers makes a case for SB interventions to target this setting and population. Everyday mundane objects with embedded microelectronics and ubiquitous computing represent a novel mode of delivering health behavior change interventions enabled by internet of things (IoTs). However, little is known about how to develop interventions involving IoT technologies. OBJECTIVE: This paper reports the design and development of an IoT-enabled SB intervention t

Multidimensional Neighborhood Environments, Domain-Specific Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior: A Multilevel Study in Nagpur, India.

Evidence linking multidimensional neighborhood environment (NE) domains to domain-specific physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior (SB) remains limited in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This study investigated these associations among 740 adults in Nagpur, India, using multilevel modeling. Perceived NE was assessed using the Comprehensive Neighborhood Environment Physical Activity Questionnaire, and domain-specific PA and SB (assessed as sitting time, ST) using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Two-level linear mixed-effects models were used to estimate the as

Unhealthy dietary habits and sedentary behavior drive untreated dental caries among adolescents: A population-based study.

Untreated dental caries remains a significant public health challenge, particularly among adolescents, where it can compromise well-being and quality of life. This population-based study investigates the factors associated with untreated dental caries in 12-year-olds across the five most populous cities (each with > 80,000 inhabitants) in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Using WHO criteria, clinical oral examinations and self-reported behavioral data were collected. Guided by a social determinants of health framework, we conducted univariable and multilevel logistic regression analyses

Improved vascular health linked to increased physical activity levels and reduced sedentary behavior in rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is characterized by deteriorated vascular health and increased cardiovascular risk. Physical activity (PA) is recommended for cardiovascular management in RA, but evidence on the associations between objectively measured PA and vascular health markers in RA is limited. In this cross-sectional study, 82 postmenopausal women with RA (62 ± 7 yr) undertook ultrasound assessments of vascular function and structure, including brachial and superficial femoral artery (BA and SFA) flow-mediated dilation; baseline and post-hyperemia peak diameters; and carotid intima-media thic

Placental structural adaptation to maternal physical activity and sedentary behavior: findings of the DALI lifestyle study.

STUDY QUESTION: Are maternal levels of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary time (ST) in obese pregnant women associated with placental structural adaptations for facilitating oxygen delivery to the fetus? SUMMARY ANSWER: Higher maternal MVPA and ST are associated with a higher density of villi, a proxy measure of placental surface area for oxygen delivery to the fetus, without further added placental vessels. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Physical activity during pregnancy intermittently reduces uterine blood flow, potentially limiting placental and fetal oxygen supply. The

Wearables for Measuring the Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior of Patients With Axial Spondyloarthritis: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) is an inflammatory rheumatic disease associated with chronic back pain and restricted mobility and physical function. Increasing physical activity is a viable strategy for improving the health and quality of life of patients with axSpA. Thus, quantifying physical activity and sedentary behavior in this population is relevant to clinical outcomes and disease management. However, to the best of our knowledge, no systematic review to date has identified and synthesized the available evidence on the use of wearable devices to objectively measure the phys

How Acceptable is Reducing Sedentary Behavior to Older Adults? Perceptions and Experiences Across Diverse Socioeconomic Areas.

Sedentary behavior is associated with negative health outcomes, and older adults represent the most sedentary age group. There is currently little qualitative evidence to inform the development of sedentary behavior interventions targeting older adults. This study explored factors affecting older adults' sedentary behaviors and the acceptability of potential strategies to reduce sedentary time. Semistructured interviews with 22 older adults with diverse socioeconomic backgrounds in Manchester, England were conducted. An inductive thematic analysis was structured using the framework approach. L

Sedentary Behavior and Physical Activity Patterns in Older Adults After Hip Fracture: A Call to Action.

The serum levels of calcium (Ca) and phosphate are maintained higher in the fetus than in the pregnant mother, especially in late gestation, to meet the demands of fetal bone development. In order to maintain this fetal stage-specific mineral homeostasis, the placenta plays a critical role through active transcellular mineral transport. Although the molecular mechanism of transplacental Ca transport has been well studied, little is known about the transport mechanism of phosphate and magnesium. Maternal mineral homeostasis is also altered during pregnancy to supply minerals to the fetus. In th

Self-reported pediatric measures of physical activity, sedentary behavior, and strength impact for PROMIS: item development.

BACKGROUND: Children's activity level is commonly assessed in clinical research, but rigorous assessment tools for children are scarce. Our objectives were to improve pediatric activity self-report measures using qualitative methods to develop item pools that measure these concepts. METHODS: On the basis of the items generated from our conceptual framework development, we applied cognitive interviews and comprehensibility reviews to ensure children readily understood the items. RESULTS: Our methods resulted in 129 unique items-physical activities (80 items), sedentary behaviors (23 items), a

Summer Heat, Physical Activity, and Sedentary Behavior of Children Outdoors and Indoors in an Urban Setting.

Only one-quarter and one-fifth of US children achieve physical activity and screen time guidelines, with children often least active during summer. This seasonal slump may be partly attributed to uncomfortable heat conditions. We examined how summer temperatures associate with children's moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary behavior outdoors and indoors in a warm urban climate. Children ages 9-10 (n = 25) in Austin, Texas, wore wGT3X-BT accelerometers and GPS devices for seven days in summer of 2023. Accelerometers recorded activity counts and ambient light levels in 15-
