Mutation Pressure and Gene-Specific Selection Shape Codon Usage Bias in the Chloroplast Genomes of Isoetes, an Ancient Aquatic Vascular Plant Lineage.

Isoetes is one of the most ancient extant vascular plant genera and represents a distinct evolutionary lineage within lycophytes. Its chloroplast genome preserves molecular signatures relevant to early land plant evolution. However, the evolutionary forces shaping codon usage bias (CUB) in Isoetes chloroplast genomes remain poorly characterized. Here, we analyzed the chloroplast genomes of 60 Isoetes species to characterize CUB patterns and disentangle the contributions of mutation pressure and natural selection to chloroplast genome evolution in this basal vascular plant lineage. Chloroplast

Triangulating evidence to evaluate selection bias in lifecourse Mendelian randomization studies: a practical framework illustrated by early-life adiposity and breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Higher adiposity in early-life has consistently been associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer in later life, with Mendelian randomization (MR) studies supporting a causal effect. However, concerns have been raised that selection bias, particularly collider stratification due to selective participation or survival, may induce spurious protective MR estimates. METHODS: We triangulated across empirical analyses and simulations to evaluate whether selection-induced bias could plausibly explain the inverse effect estimate of early-life adiposity on breast cancer risk. First, we

Adjusting for Selection Bias Due to Missing Data in Electronic Health Records-Based Research by Blending Multiple Imputation and Inverse Probability Weighting.

Due to the complex process by which electronic health records (EHR) are generated and collected, missing data is a significant challenge when conducting large observational studies using such data. However, most standard methods that seek to adjust for the potential selection bias induced by restricting to individuals with complete data fail to address the heterogeneous structure of EHR. To address this, a framework was previously proposed that modularizes the data provenance that gives rise to the observed data as a sequence of decisions made by patients, healthcare providers, and the health

The Raine study had no evidence of significant perinatal selection bias after two decades of follow up: a longitudinal pregnancy cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Cohort studies may increase or decrease their selection bias as they progress through time. The Western Australian Pregnancy Cohort (Raine) Study has followed 2868 children for over two decades; from fetal into adult life. This paper analyses the cohort over time, assessing potential bias that may come and go with recruitment, retention and loss of participants. METHODS: Linked data from all births in Western Australian over the 3 years the Raine Cohort was recruited were obtained to compare perinatal characteristics and subsequent health outcomes between the Western Australian (W

Short stature and delayed puberty in gymnasts: influence of selection bias on leg length and the duration of training on trunk length.

BACKGROUND: Delays in bone age, the onset of puberty, and skeletal growth in gymnasts could be, in part, the reason for an interest in gymnastics, rather than being the result of vigorous exercise. We hypothesized that short stature and delayed bone age are present at the start of gymnastics, and training delays growth, producing short stature, even after retirement. METHODS: Sitting height and leg length were measured in 83 active female gymnasts, 42 retired gymnasts, and 154 healthy control subjects. Results were expressed as age-specific SD scores (mean +/- SEM). RESULTS: In the cross-sec

Selective classification under imbalance in multiclass settings: A novel metric for bias-aware risk-coverage evaluation.

OBJECTIVE: Selective classification improves reliability by allowing models to abstain on uncertain inputs, which is critical in safety-sensitive domains such as healthcare. However, commonly used evaluation metrics obscure fairness issues under class imbalance, leading to disproportionately high rejection of minority classes and misleadingly favorable assessments of selective strategies. METHODS: We introduce two imbalance-aware evaluation metrics, Class-Averaged AURC (CA-AURC) and Class-Averaged AUGRC (CA-AUGRC), which integrate risk against class-specific coverage and then average across c

Investigating the selective attention, attentional bias and smoking among Turkish University students: A cross-sectional study.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between selective attention, attentional bias and smoking in Turkish university students. The study was conducted with 64 individuals with an average age of 20.3 ± 0.83 years. While the d2 Test of Attention was used to measure various aspects of attention including processing speed, accuracy and selective attention; the Smoking Stroop Test evaluated the attentional bias toward smoking-related stimuli by comparing reaction times to smoking-related and neutral words. Also, the Fagerström Nicotine Dependence Test and Questionnaire of Smoki

Functional modulation of contralateral bias in early and object-selective areas after stroke of the occipital ventral cortices.

Object agnosia is a rare symptom, occurring mainly after bilateral damage of the ventral visual cortex. Most patients suffering from unilateral ventral lesions are clinically non-agnosic. Here, we studied the effect of unilateral occipito-temporal lesions on object categorization and its underlying neural correlates in visual areas. Thirteen non-agnosic stroke patients and twelve control subjects performed an event-related rapid object categorization task in the fMRI scanner where images were presented either to the left or to the right of a fixed point. Eight patients had intact central visua

Significance Testing for Differences Between Baseline Variables Versus the I2 Test in Detecting Selection Bias in Randomised Controlled Trials: A Simulation Study.

AIM: The aim of the study is to test the null hypothesis that the specificities and sensitivities of the p-value-based significance test for differences between baseline variables and the I2 test for single trials do not significantly differ in detecting selection bias in randomised controlled trials (RCTs). METHODS: In MS Excel (Microsoft Corp., Redmond, WA, US), 100 trials were simulated, each consisting of two treatment groups (A and B), with 100 subjects in each group. Fifty trials were biased, while 50 remained non-biased. Both tests were applied to all trials, yielding true positive, fa

Time-sensitive testing pressures and COVID-19 outcomes: are socioeconomic inequalities over the first year of the pandemic explained by selection bias?

BACKGROUND: There are many ways in which selection bias might impact COVID-19 research. Here we focus on selection for receiving a polymerase-chain-reaction (PCR) SARS-CoV-2 test and how known changes to selection pressures over time may bias research into COVID-19 infection. METHODS: Using UK Biobank (N = 420,231; 55% female; mean age = 66.8 [SD = 8·11]) we estimate the association between socio-economic position (SEP) and (i) being tested for SARS-CoV-2 infection versus not being tested (ii) testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection versus testing negative and (iii) testing negative for SAR

Study Selection Bias and Racial or Ethnic Disparities in Estimated Age at Onset of Cardiometabolic Disease Among Midlife Women in the US.

IMPORTANCE: Racial disparities in cardiometabolic health are consistently observed in cohort studies. However, most studies neither evaluate differences in age at onset nor account for systematic exclusion stemming from "weathering" (accelerated health declines for minoritized groups due to structural social and economic marginalization). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate racial or ethnic disparities in age at onset of 4 cardiometabolic outcomes (hypertension, isolated systolic hypertension [ISH], insulin resistance [IR], and diabetes), accounting for multiple forms of potential selection bias. DESIGN,

Hemodynamic Selection Bias in Observational Comparisons of EVAR Versus Open Repair for Ruptured Infrarenal Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) is often associated with lower short-term mortality than open surgical repair (OSR) in observational studies of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (rAAA), but this apparent benefit may reflect hemodynamic stability, anatomical suitability, and emergency treatment allocation. We aimed to reappraise EVAR-OSR comparisons by examining whether mortality estimates are influenced by treatment-selection bias. METHODS: PubMed, the Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang Data were searched from inception to May 2026. Compara

Reducing selection bias while maintaining precision through an integrated analysis: 2-year longitudinal analysis of imaging outcomes in the SPondyloArthritis Caught Early cohort.

BACKGROUND: Cohort studies often use simple models, for example, completers-only or aggregated scores, to assess changes in imaging outcomes. With more data available, this introduces selection bias. Integrated analyses allow scores from multiple reading rounds; therefore, we assessed their effect on the change estimates' precision compared with the completers-only analysis. Second, we compared change estimates from models using aggregated scores and scores analysed per reader. METHODS: Patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) from the SPondyloArthritis Caught Early cohort were followed

The Association of Built Environment and Physical Activity in Older Adults: Using a Citywide Public Housing Scheme to Reduce Residential Self-Selection Bias.

Previous studies have documented numerous health benefits of conducting regular physical activity among older adults. The built environment is believed to be a key factor that can hinder or facilitate daily physical activity, such as walking and exercising. However, most empirical studies focusing on environment-physical activity associations exhibited residential self-selection bias with cross-sectional research design, engendering doubts about the impact of built environment on physical activity. To reduce this bias, we assessed physical activity behaviors of 720 Hong Kong older adults (≥65

To weight or not to weight? The effect of selection bias in 3 large electronic health record-linked biobanks and recommendations for practice.

OBJECTIVES: To develop recommendations regarding the use of weights to reduce selection bias for commonly performed analyses using electronic health record (EHR)-linked biobank data. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We mapped diagnosis (ICD code) data to standardized phecodes from 3 EHR-linked biobanks with varying recruitment strategies: All of Us (AOU; n = 244 071), Michigan Genomics Initiative (MGI; n = 81 243), and UK Biobank (UKB; n = 401 167). Using 2019 National Health Interview Survey data, we constructed selection weights for AOU and MGI to represent the US adult population more. We used weigh

Measuring under-5 mortality and fertility through mobile phone surveys: an assessment of selection bias in 34 low-income and middle-income countries.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to assess sample selection bias in mobile phone survey estimates of fertility and under-5 mortality. DESIGN: With data from the Demographic and Health Surveys, we use logistic regressions to identify sociodemographic correlates of mobile phone ownership and access, and Poisson regressions to estimate the association between mobile phone ownership (or access) and fertility and under-5 mortality estimates. We evaluate the potential reasons why estimates by mobile phone ownership differ using a set of behavioural characteristics. SETTING: 34 low-income and middle-inc

Timing of Initiation of Antiretroviral Therapy and Risk of Preterm Birth in Studies of HIV-infected Pregnant Women: The Role of Selection Bias.

BACKGROUND: Women who initiate antiretroviral therapy (ART) during pregnancy are reported to have lower risk of preterm birth compared with those who enter pregnancy care already receiving ART. We hypothesize this association can be largely attributed to selection bias. METHODS: We simulated a cohort of 1000 preconceptional, HIV-infected women, where half were randomly allocated to receive immediate ART and half to delay ART until their presentation for pregnancy care. Gestational age at delivery was drawn from population data unrelated to randomization group (i.e., the true effect of delayed

Drop-out from cardiovascular magnetic resonance in a randomized controlled trial of ST-elevation myocardial infarction does not cause selection bias on endpoints.

BACKGROUND: The extent of selection bias due to drop-out in clinical trials of ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) as surrogate endpoints is unknown. We sought to interrogate the characteristics and prognosis of patients who dropped out before acute CMR assessment compared to CMR-participants in a previously published double-blinded, placebo-controlled all-comer trial with CMR outcome as the primary endpoint. METHODS: Baseline characteristics and composite endpoint of all-cause mortality, heart failure and re-infarction after 30 days and 5

Self-controlled case series and misclassification bias induced by case selection from administrative hospital databases: application to febrile convulsions in pediatric vaccine pharmacoepidemiology.

Vaccine safety studies are increasingly conducted by using administrative health databases and self-controlled case series designs that are based on cases only. Often, several criteria are available to define the cases, which may yield different positive predictive values, as well as different sensitivities, and therefore different numbers of selected cases. The question then arises as to which is the best case definition. This article proposes new methodology to guide this choice based on the bias of the relative incidence and the power of the test. We apply this methodology in a validation s

Selective Outcome Reporting Bias in Randomized Controlled Trials on Dental Caries in Children and Adolescents: A Meta-Research Study.

INTRODUCTION: Selective outcome reporting (SOR) is a bias that can occur in randomized controlled trials (RCTs), defined as the alteration or omission of primary outcome in the publication compared to the original protocol. Researchers may modify outcomes to highlight statistically significant results. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of SOR in RCTs related to dental caries in children and adolescents. METHODS: We conducted a search on <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="http://ClinicalTrials.gov" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">ClinicalTrials.gov</ext-link> and the
