The prospective assessment of self-concept in neglectful and physically abusive low income mothers.

Maternal self-esteem has long been associated with the quality of maternal-child interactions and many assume that low self-esteem contributes to the cause of maltreatment. Assessments of the self-concepts of maltreating parents, however, have been done only after maltreatment has occurred. Prospective measurement of self-concept would help to clarify its role in the etiology of maltreatment. In this study, 471 pregnant women completed the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale (TSCS). State protective services' records were reviewed 3 years after these children were born. When records of the 459 women

The relationship of self-concept and autonomy to oral contraceptive compliance among adolescent females.

Self-concept and autonomy are typically negotiated during adolescence, a time when many females also become sexually active. Nonuse and discontinuation of contraceptives by teenagers place them at high risk for pregnancy. The present study explores the relationship between these psychological factors and contraceptive noncompliance during adolescence. Fifty-five adolescent females beginning a contraceptive regimen were entered into the study. Compliance at four months after the initiation of an oral contraceptive was associated with scoring high on the Behavior Subscale of the Piers-Harris Sel

Father involvement and self-concept among adolescents in Indonesia: the moderating role of sex.

OBJECTIVES: Father involvement consistently predicts positive developmental outcomes, yet few studies have examined its relationship with self-concept among adolescents from collectivist cultural backgrounds, and fewer still have used culturally grounded measures. This study examined the relationship between father involvement and self-concept among adolescents and investigated whether sex and age moderated this relationship. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 302 adolescents (62.9 % female; 63.6 % middle adolescents) at a state Islamic senior high school in Pekanbaru, Riau P

Negotiating body self-concept in Iranian women living with obesity: A qualitative phenomenological study.

Background: Body self-concept is vital to psychological well-being, yet little is known about how women living with obesity in non-Western contexts, particularly Iran, negotiate their bodily identities amidst familial and gendered expectations. Methods: This descriptive phenomenological study explored body self-concept among 48 Iranian women with obesity using purposive maximum-variation sampling, including 24 treatment-seeking and 24 non-treatment participants. Semi-structured interviews were analyzed via Colaizzi's method, supported by reflexive and validation procedures. Results: Body self-

Developmental trajectories of school-beginners' ability self-concept, intrinsic value and performance in mathematics.

BACKGROUND: Although research clearly demonstrates the importance of motivation in mathematics learning, relatively little is known about the developmental dynamics between different facets of mathematics motivation and performance, especially in the early years of schooling. AIMS: In a longitudinal setting, we examined (1) how children's ability self-concept and intrinsic value in mathematics change over time during their first 3 years in school, (2) how those changes relate to each other and (3) how they connect with mathematics performance. SAMPLE: The participants were 285 Finnish school

Self-concept, creativity and developmental dyslexia in university students: Effects of age of assessment.

Educational experiences often influence self-concept. Thus, readers with dyslexia can have low self-esteem and self-efficacy, and perceive themselves as less intelligent than their peers. They may develop creativity to succeed despite their difficulties but findings are inconsistent and rarely consider the effect of age of assessment on self-perception. This study included 145 university students (Mage = 24.43 years), 72 with dyslexia; of these, 53% had been assessed in childhood (Mage = 11.89 years), 47% in adulthood (Mage = 27.38 years). A survey assessed self-esteem, self-efficacy, creativi

Coping in Pediatric Burn Survivors and Its Relation to Social Functioning and Self-Concept.

Pediatric burn survivors experience increased risk for bullying, stigmatization, body image concerns, and problematic social functioning. Although coping behaviors are associated with engagement in social supports and positive self-concept in multiple pediatric illness populations, their relation has not been examined in pediatric burns. This study examined coping in relation to social functioning and self-concept in 51 pediatric burn survivors aged 7-17years (M=12.54; SD=2.65). Survivors and their caregivers completed the Child Coping Strategies Checklist (CCSC; youth report); the Burn Injury

Subtyping of Adolescents with School Refusal Behavior: Exploring Differences Across Profiles in Self-Concept.

Not all adolescents with school attendance problems attribute their behavior to the same causes. Knowing the subtypes of students who reject school and their relationship with new variables, such as self-concept, is an unresolved task. This study aimed to identify different school refusal behavior profiles and to determine whether these profiles differed from each other based on the scores of the eleven dimensions of self-concept (Physical appearance, Physical abilities, Parent relations, Same-sex relations, Opposite-sex relations, Honesty, Emotional stability, Self-esteem, Verbal, Math, and G

[The self-concept of patients with Social Anxiety Disorder: manifestation and change through psychotherapy ].

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the self-concept of patients with Social Anxiety Disorder deviates significantly from that found in the normative sample, to what extent it changes through psychotherapeutic short-term interventions and how such changes in self-concept relate to changes in the level of social anxiety. METHODS: The self-concept of N = 86 patients with Social Anxiety Disorder was assessed using the Frankfurter-Selbstkonzeptskalen (FSKN; Deusinger 1986). Patients were treated with a manualized cognitive (CT) or psychodynamic (PDT) short-term intervention. The level of social anxi

[Diagnosis of depressive disorder and so-called exhaustion depression. Self-esteem--a central concept].

Depressive disorders can be recognized by the loss of self-esteem; this contrasts with mourning and neurasthenic reactions, in which self-esteem remains intact. Just as depression can result from the gradual reduction and eventual loss of self-esteem, mourning and neurasthenic reactions can evolve into true depressive states. "Exhaustion depression", a new diagnostic category connected to "burnout" situations, should be applied only when criteria for depressive disorder are fulfilled, including loss of self-esteem. When these criteria are lacking we should refer only to an exhaustion state pro

Anxiety, self-concept, and personal and social adjustments in children with sickle cell anemia.

The psychologic effect of sickle cell anemia, a life-long chronic illness, on the self-concept, anxiety level, and personal and social adjustments of school-aged children was investigated by using a battery of standard psychologic tests. Two groups of children were evaluated: a study group of 29 children with sickle cell anemia (hemoglobin SS) and a comparison group of 26 black inner city schoolchildren without sickle cell disease or other known chronic illness. The youngsters with sickle cell anemia did not differ from a peer group of schoolchildren in personal, social, and total adjustments.

Direct and indirect effects of childhood adversity on psychopathology: Investigating parallel mediation via self-concept clarity, self-esteem and intolerance of uncertainty.

OBJECTIVES: The aim was to extend previous work on the identity disruption model (IDM) of adult psychological distress. According to the IDM, aversive childhood experiences (ACEs) disrupt the development of identity, resulting in an unclear sense of self and a reliance on external sources of self-definition, leading to psychological distress in adulthood. In line with this model, self-concept clarity (SCC) in parallel with self-esteem (SE) and intolerance of uncertainty (IU) has been shown to mediate the relationship between childhood adversity and depression and anxiety. The current study exa

Social media addiction, self-concept clarity, and social media fatigue: a two-wave longitudinal study.

Although social media addiction has been linked to numerous negative psychological outcomes, the self-level processes underlying the connection between this addiction and psychological burnout have not been sufficiently elucidated. This study examined whether self-concept clarity plays a mediating role in the longitudinal relationship between social media addiction and social media fatigue in a sample of Turkish adults. Conducted using a two-wave cross-lagged panel design, the study collected data from 344 adults (Mage = 34.06, SD = 8.81; 68% female) at two different measurement points three m

A study on identity conflict, self-concept clarity, and dual career adaptability among collegiate athletes.

The study examined the prospective associations among academic-athletic identity conflict (role interference), self-concept clarity, and dual career adaptability among Taiwanese collegiate student-athletes. Drawing on Conservation of Resources theory, self-concept clarity was conceptualised as a potentially relevant personal psychological resource associated with student-athletes' adaptation to concurrent academic and athletic demands. A two-wave prospective association design with a cross-sectional first stage (four-month interval) was employed. Identity conflict and self-concept clarity were

School changers and school remainers: Parents' and pupils' evaluation of inclusion and adolescents' self-concept.

Changing school can be a major upheaval in the life of a teenager, involving change of the school environment, teachers and classmates, often resulting in worse academic performance. The current study compared adolescents who changed during secondary school (school changers) with adolescents who stayed at the same school (school remainers) (N = 814). School change was not related to migration background and special educational needs, but was more likely with shorter parent education and a vocational school track (Lange-Küttner, 2025a). At the beginning of the five-year longitudinal project in

Longitudinal relationships among parental-adolescent attachment, peer attachment, self-concept clarity, and hope in adolescents.

Despite growing concerns regarding the development of hope among adolescents, the longitudinal relationship between parental-adolescent attachment, peer attachment, self-concept clarity, and hope remains far from being fully understood. This three-wave longitudinal study (6 months apart) across 1 year examined the relationship between attachment with parents and peers, self-concept clarity, and hope in 1,312 adolescents (age range 12-18, Mage = 14.29, SD = 1.38; 50.2% males) by using cross-lagged panel models. Who Am I? Self-concept in Adults with Cystic Fibrosis: Association with Anxiety and Depression.

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a progressive condition resulting in reduced lung function and strongly associated with elevated anxiety and depression symptoms. Self-concept refers to an individual's overarching sense of identity, a positive level of which is widely associated with reduced anxiety and depression. There is a significant lack of self-concept research within CF. This study explores the association between self-concept and anxiety and depression in adults with CF. 64 adults living with CF in Western Australia completed validated online questionnaires (Generalised Anxiety Disorder-7, Pati
