As awareness of mental health increases worldwide, how to improve mental health has begun to be discussed in many countries. Stress is known to cause diverse physical and mental health problems, including psychopathologies. On the other hand, our previous studies identified that self-compassion, kindness and understanding towards oneself are key components for good mental health in many populations, including Japanese workers. The government reports that Japanese workers suffer from high rates of mental health problems. However, the mechanism of how self-compassion helps their mental health re

The COVID-19 lockdown increased the day-to-day challenges faced by parents, and thereby may have increased parental burnout risk. Therefore, identifying parental burnout protection factors is essential. This study aimed to assess the protective role of the following factors which can be increased through mindfulness practice: trait mindfulness, self-compassion, and concrete vs. abstract ruminations. A total of 459 parents (Mage = 40; 98.7% female) completed self-reported questionnaires at two-time points to assess the predictive role of mindfulness on parental burnout, self-compassion and rumi

INTRODUCTION: Previous research has demonstrated that individuals' levels of self-esteem strongly influence how they regulate and protect their self-esteem. However, it remains unclear to what extent these regulatory strategies are shaped by trainable psychological processes such as decentering and self-compassion.
METHODS: Two studies were conducted to investigate the role of decentering and self-compassion in self-esteem regulation. Study 1 (n = 230) examined whether decentering and self-compassion mediate the relationship between trait self-esteem and self-esteem regulation strategies. In

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) has increasingly become a common health concern among young adults. To effectively address and prevent NSSI, it is crucial to understand the impact of both early childhood maltreatment and recent stress, which are well-established risk factors. Previous studies have primarily focused on these factors individually or overall, while neglecting the potential heterogeneity of childhood maltreatment and recent stress when these factors co-occur. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the potential latent types of childhood maltreatment and recent stres

OBJECTIVE: This study adopted both variable-centered and person-centered approaches to examine the internal relationships between self-compassion and rhinitis control assessment in patients with allergic rhinitis, and to explore heterogeneity in self-compassion using latent profile analysis.
METHODS: From February 2026 to April 2026, 419 patients with allergic rhinitis were recruited from three tertiary Grade A hospitals in Sichuan Province, China. Data were collected using the Self-Compassion Scale, the Rhinitis Control Assessment Test, the Allergic Rhinitis Self-Care Scale, and a demographi

This randomized controlled trial evaluates the effects of a brief online self-compassion training (SCT) on self-compassion, self-criticism, perfectionism, social anxiety, and psychological health in comparison to a generic stress-reduction training (SRT). Both training courses consisted of six brief, format-matched, unsupervised, online sessions with various exercises, and took place in a self-paced manner over 2 to 4 weeks. We collected self-report data on self-compassion, self-criticism, perfectionism, social anxiety, and psychological health. Participants were 200 healthy adults (85.5 % fem

Child maltreatment is negatively associated with subjective well-being in emerging adulthood, but the understanding of the mechanisms of this relationship is incomplete. Guided by the stress process model incorporated with a life-course perspective, the present study examined the protective roles of self-related resources (self-esteem and self-compassion) in this association, while considering various maltreatment types (physical abuse, physical neglect, emotional abuse, emotional neglect, and sexual abuse). The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form, Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale, Self-compa

Research investigating potential pathways from Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) to later self-harming and offending behaviours has inconsistent findings. Past research, however, has not fully explored the interplay between ACEs and modifiable psychological factors, such as shame and self-compassion. The present study explored the relationship between ACE, shame, and self-compassion to identify their role in explaining the variance in later harm in a sample of individuals who have committed sexual offences. Two hundred and fifty adults incarcerated for sexual offences participated. Multiple

Background: Psychological flourishing is a key indicator of optimal mental health and professional well-being, particularly among psychologists who are routinely exposed to emotionally demanding clinical environments. Although self-compassion has consistently been associated with positive psychological outcomes, few studies have integrated traditional statistical methods with machine learning approaches to predict psychological flourishing among psychologists. Objective: This study aimed to examine the relationship between self-compassion and psychological flourishing among psychologists in Sa

OBJECTIVE: Public health systems need evidence-based, feasible, and acceptable preventive interventions for trauma-exposed Black Americans. Self-compassion often serves as a protective factor following trauma exposure, but whether it alleviates risk for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and the extent to which it buffers against the deleterious effects of particular trauma types in a high-risk, community sample remains unknown. The present study examined whether the association between various trauma types (noninterpersonal vs. physical vs. sexual) and PTSD symptom severity was mod

The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether the benefits of self-compassion on sleep difficulties extend to a sample of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I college athletes, and to examine the unique contributions of two possible pathways that have been separately evidenced to underlie the self-compassion and sleep difficulties association in non-athlete populations - namely perceived stress and rumination. A total of 412 NCAA Division I college athletes (M = 19.88, SD = 1.50) from 16 different West, Midwest, South, and North-eastern universities complete

Self-compassion is the ability to offer oneself kindness and compassion in response to failure, suffering, or insecurity. Learning how to be self-compassionate through self-compassion training appears effective for improving psychological well-being in community samples and promising for clinical populations. The current randomized controlled trial was designed to (a) examine the effectiveness of a self-guided self-compassion training program; and (b) determine whether self-compassion training can help mitigate social anxiety disorder (SAD) symptoms. Adults with SAD (n = 63; Mage = 34.3, SD =

Self-compassionate individuals treat themselves kindly when undergoing stress. The present study examined self-compassion's relationship to risky decision-making on a gambling task by 240 problem and non-problem gamblers who were tested in a casino setting. Multi-level modeling analyses showed that participants expressed differential rates of learning to avoid risks on the gambling task, depending on their status as potential problem/non-problem gamblers and their level of self-compassion. Among potential problem gamblers, participants higher in self-compassion showed significant gains in perf

Despite promising theory, empirical study of the putative protective properties of self-compassion (SC) with respect to resilience to and recovery from traumatic stress is limited. The present study tested the theorized protective role(s) of SC with respect to trauma-related psychopathology over time among an at-risk sample of adolescents (N = 64, 26 % females, M(SD) age = 17.5(1.07) years-old, range age = 15-19; grades 9-12) directly exposed to a potentially traumatic stressful event - the Mount Carmel Forest Fire Disaster. The longitudinal design involved three assessment time-points - wit

Self-compassion involves being kind to oneself when challenged with personal weaknesses or hardship and has been claimed to be associated with resilience in various areas. So far, there are only a handful of studies that investigate self-compassion and its relation to clinical depression. Therefore, the principal goals of the present study were (a) to compare self-compassion in clinically depressed patients and never-depressed subjects, (b) to investigate self-compassion and its relation to cognitive-behavioral avoidance and rumination in depressed outpatients, and (c) to investigate ruminatio

INTRODUCTION: Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the absence of external stimuli, often experienced as ringing or buzzing. While many individuals habituate to tinnitus, others develop chronic tinnitus (CT), which can severely affect emotional well-being. Psychological mechanisms such as anxiety and maladaptive coping are known contributors to tinnitus distress, yet the protective role of mindfulness and self-compassion remains underexplored. This study examined the associations between tinnitus distress, anxiety, depression, mindfulness, and self-compassion in a clinical sample. It further

Self-compassion has been defined as being open to one's suffering, not avoiding or disconnecting from it, coupled with the kind and caring motivation to alleviate one's suffering. There is increasing evidence that self-compassion might function as a buffer against the negative mental health effects of experiencing work-stressors. However, while this moderating role of self-compassion has been demonstrated when measures of subjective stress are used, different studies that use measures of more objective potential stressors failed to demonstrate a moderating role of self-compassion. Furthermore,
