Unpacking School-Based Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Programs: A Realist Review.

Background: Existing efforts to understand school-based child sexual abuse (CSA) prevention programs mainly focus on the effectiveness of these programs in increasing participants' CSA knowledge and self-protective skills. There are currently no reviews addressing the underpinning pathways leading to these outcomes. In order to increase our understanding about the underpinning causal and contextual factors and inform the further development of school-based CSA prevention programs, a realist review was conducted to synthesize existing evidence from a broad range of data. Methods: An iterative s

Social phobia: the Anxiety Disorders Associated of America helps raise the veil of ignorance.

Social phobias affect some 2.4 million American adults, and more than 5 million can expect to develop a social phobia during their lifetime. Despite their prevalence, social phobias have been virtually ignored until this past decade. The Anxiety Disorders Association of America (ADAA) was founded in 1980 to promote awareness among professionals and the public of anxiety disorders. This paper outlines the objectives of ADAA and its programs, including the Self-Help Group Network, helpful publications, and its partnership with psychiatrists and patients. The benefits of self-help programs to per

Impact of a low-vision self-management program on informal caregivers.

PURPOSE: To evaluate caregivers' experiences and outcomes following attendance at a patient-centered group-based self-management program called "Living with Low Vision." METHODS: Participants were caregivers of adults with low vision. A pre-post study design evaluated the impact of the program on single-item indicators that assessed levels of understanding of low vision, awareness of devices, aids and practical strategies, and questionnaires to assess confidence to deal with low vision, self-efficacy, and emotional well being. Participants formed three groups: (1) those who attended the progr

The effectiveness of drug treatment programs in reducing criminal behavior: a meta-analysis.

The main aim of this paper is to assess the effectiveness of drug treatment programs in reducing criminal behavior. The research is based on a systematic review and meta-analysis of evaluations of drug treatment programs. The research investigated various drug treatment programs including methadone treatment, therapeutic communities, post-release supervision for drug-misusing offenders, and drug courts, and focused on drug treatment programs that were primarily concerned with heroin, crack and cocaine misuse. The main outcome variable analyzed was reoffending following treatment as measured by

Evaluation of a self-management patient education programme for fibromyalgia-results of a cluster-RCT in inpatient rehabilitation.

The objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of a self-management patient education programme for fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) as compared with usual care education in inpatient rehabilitation. In a multicentre cluster-randomized controlled trial, 583 inpatients in 3 rehabilitation centres received an advanced self-management patient education programme or usual care education. Patients completed questionnaires at admission, discharge and after 6 and 12 months. Primary outcomes were disease- and treatment-specific knowledge at discharge, and self-management-competencies after 6 months. Secon

From Two Dimensions to Multidimensions: A Mechanistic Model to Support Deliberate CPD Development, Coordination, and Evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: The effectiveness of continuing professional development as an intervention to improve health professional behavior and patient health is variable and contentious. To clarify the causal relationships underlying program outcomes and facilitate a necessary shift from outcomes-only-based approaches to outcome-based and theory-based approaches in program development and evaluation, we developed a model of mechanisms mapped to relevant outcomes. METHODS: Mechanisms identified in a prior realist synthesis of opioid agonist therapy continuing professional development programs were iter

Evaluations of State Medical Cannabis Programs in the USA: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Medical cannabis (MC) use is increasing across the USA, with functional MC programs now operating in 38 states. While program policies and practices vary widely, little is known about whether and how states evaluate their programs. Better characterization of state MC program evaluation to date could inform states, program officials, and providers about best practices and provide a roadmap for future program evaluation. SUMMARY: We conducted a narrative review of state MC program evaluations, including peer-reviewed literature and reports produced by independent state-based and non

Physician self-audit: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Self-audit involves self-collection of personal performance data, reflection on gaps between performance and standards, and development and implementation of learning or quality improvement plans by individual care providers. It appears to stimulate learning and quality improvement, but few physicians engage in self-audit. The purpose of this study was to identify how self-audit has been operationalized; factors influencing self-audit conduct and outcomes, including program design; and issues warranting further research. METHODS: A systematic review of quantitative and qualitati

Implementation of the STEPPS program for the treatment of self-harm behaviors in Catalonia's prisons: barriers and facilitators.

BACKGROUND: The Systems Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving (STEPPS) is an evidence-based program that has been shown to be effective in reducing self-harm behaviors in Correctional Settings (CS). However, there is limited understanding of the contextual factors that impact the implementation of this intervention within such complex environments. A comprehensive understanding of the implementation process is crucial for the successful adoption of this program. This study aims to examine the factors that influence the implementation of the STEPPS program in CS, specificall

[Lower Extremity Exercise Improves Functional Fitness, Physiological Indexes, Exercise Self-Efficacy, Sleep Quality, and Mental Health in Middle-Aged and Older Individuals].

BACKGROUND: Middle-aged and older individuals suffer from skeletal muscle loss due to aging, increasing the risk of sarcopenia. Muscular dystrophy reduces lower-extremity muscle endurance. The annual incidence of falls in the community is about 30-40%. Falls contribute to disability and fractures, affect quality of life, reduce mental health, and, in severe cases, result in death. Therefore, preventing lower limb muscle weakness in middle-aged and older individuals should be taken seriously. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to promote community health with a focus on older, community-dw

"Nightmares-Family Medicine" Course Is an Effective Acute Care Teaching Tool for Family Medicine Residents.

INTRODUCTION: Simulation is an effective method for teaching acute care skills but has not been comprehensively evaluated with family medicine (FM) residents. We developed a comprehensive simulation-based approach for teaching acute care skills to FM residents and assessed it for effectiveness. METHOD: We compared the effectiveness of our standard acute care simulation training [Acute Care Rounds (ACR)] to a more comprehensive simulation-based acute care program, Nightmares-Family Medicine (NM). We used a self-reported comfort scale as well as video-captured performance on an acute care Objec

Peer-led active tuberculosis case-finding among people living with HIV: lessons from Nepal.

PROBLEM: People living with a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection have a high risk of tuberculosis and should undergo regular screening. However, they can be difficult to reach because they are stigmatized and discriminated against. APPROACH: In Nepal, the nongovernmental organization Naya Goreto implemented a peer-led tuberculosis screening project in which people living with HIV volunteered to contact others in this high-risk population. Volunteers took part in a short training course, after which they attempted to contact people living with HIV through existing networks and self-h

Procedural and examination skills of first-year postgraduate doctors do not improve with clinical experience alone.

AIM: To look for factors mitigating for or against first-year postgraduate house surgeons (PGY1) gaining experience in examination and procedural skills. METHODS: Ten PGY1s at Hutt Hospital (Lower Hutt, New Zealand) filled in self-reporting questionnaires to assess the impact of 6 months of on-the-ward training on their baseline competence in clinical examination and procedural skills. Opportunities for skills acquisition, and barriers (if any) towards gaining experience were assessed. RESULTS: The small numbers of PGY1s limit generalisation of the findings, however certain trends are eviden
