Pathophysiological effects of long COVID-19 (auto)antibodies on fertility.

Molecular mimicry between foreign and self-antigens has long been recognized to initiate/exacerbate autoimmunity. Shared amino acid sequences have been found between SARS-CoV-2 Spike glycoprotein and human self-proteins, raising concerns about potential damages. We previously identified sequences with ≥5 identical residues shared by the SARS-CoV-2 Spike and spermatogenesis-associated proteins. One of these peptides was especially recognized by antibodies from infected, but not vaccinated individuals. Here, their pathogenic effects were explored in vivo. Injection of peptide antibodies into hea

Dual infection by "+" and "-" mating types of Ajellomyces (Blastomyces) dermatitidis.

A culture of Blastomyces dermatitidis isolated via bronchial washing from a patient with blastomycosis was studied intensively. The primary isolate was shown to have contained both the "+" and "-" mating type determiners of Ajellomyces dermatitidis. This was evidenced by the observations that both a first and a second subculture, when paired with itself produced fertile ascocarps typical of A. dermatitidis. Both these subcultures determined the production of ascospores when paired individually with each of six testers, these testers not producing fertile fruiting bodies when selfed. Isolation

REVIEW: CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES OF DOING IT WITH ONESELF-SYNTHESIS AND META-ANALYSIS OF NEODERMATAN HERMAPHRODITIC MATING SYSTEMS.

Hermaphroditic mating systems profoundly influence evolution, yet in parasitic flatworms (Neodermata) they remain strikingly understudied. For decades, sweeping claims have oscillated between pervasive selfing and near-universal outcrossing, reflecting a lack of comprehensive synthesis. This review, the first in more than 40 yr, integrates nearly a century of research, from early observational studies to modern genetic analyses, to reveal a far more nuanced picture. Our meta-analysis of population-genetic data shows a sharp departure from the bimodal selfing patterns typical of plants and othe

Selfing Promotes Spread and Introgression of Segregation Distorters in Hermaphroditic Plants.

Segregation distorters (SDs) are genetic elements that distort the Mendelian segregation ratio to favor their own transmission and are able to spread even when they incur fitness costs on organisms carrying them. Depending on the biology of the host organisms and the genetic architecture of the SDs, the population dynamics of SDs can be highly variable. Inbreeding is considered an effective mechanism for inhibiting the spread of SDs in populations, and can evolve as a defense mechanism against SDs in some systems. However, we show that inbreeding in the form of selfing in fact promotes the spr

Cloning and Selfing Affect Population Genetic Variation in Simulations of Outcrossing, Sexual Sea Stars.

AbstractMany sea stars are well known for facultative or obligate asexual reproduction in both the adult and larval life-cycle stages. Some species and lineages are also capable of facultative or obligate hermaphroditic reproduction with self-fertilization. However, models of population genetic variation and empirical analyses of genetic data typically assume only sexual reproduction and outcrossing. A recent reanalysis of previously published empirical data (microsatellite genotypes) from two studies of one of the most well-known sea star species (the crown-of-thorns sea star; Acanthaster sp.

Laboratory synthesis of an independently reproducing vertebrate species.

Speciation in animals commonly involves an extrinsic barrier to genetic exchange followed by the accumulation of sufficient genetic variation to impede subsequent productive interbreeding. All-female species of whiptail lizards, which originated by interspecific hybridization between sexual progenitors, are an exception to this rule. Here, the arising species instantaneously acquires a novel genotype combining distinctive alleles from two different species, and reproduction by parthenogenesis constitutes an effective intrinsic barrier to genetic exchange. Fertilization of diploid parthenogenet

Alexithymia in infertile women.

OBJECTIVE: Alexithymia was compared in women with fertility disorders and fertile women who have never been confronted with fertility problems. METHOD: Self-report instruments (TAS-20 and BVAQ) were used to measure alexithymia in a group of 73 infertile women and in a comparison group of 32 fertile women. Semi-structured interviews were used to assess medical history, current and lifetime diagnosis of psychiatric disorders. RESULTS: Infertile women showed significantly higher rates of alexithymia than fertile women. The degree of alexithymia does not constitute a discriminating variable betw

Mindful Self-Compassion for Infertility-Related Distress: A Single-Group Intervention Study.

OBJECTIVES: Women experiencing infertility report heightened levels of anxiety, depression, and distress. However, access to affordable mental health care is limited in most areas of the world. Self-directed interventions, including bibliotherapy and mobile app-delivered interventions, provide a potentially cost-effective option for the treatment of infertility-related distress. This study assessed the efficacy of an 8-week self-directed mindful self-compassion intervention in reducing psychological distress and improving quality of life. METHODS: Fifty women experiencing infertility agreed t

Fertility treatment decision-making: the effect of insurance coverage for fertility medications.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the perceived impact of insurance coverage for fertility medications on patients' fertility treatment decision-making. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study involving a patient survey and chart review of women at a Canadian university-affiliated fertility centre. The primary outcome was to determine whether women with self-reported insurance coverage for fertility medications perceived the impact of insurance coverage for fertility medications differently from women without coverage or those who do not know their extent of coverage. Secondary outcomes included di

Psychosocial Aspects of Fertility and Assisted Reproductive Technology.

Psychosocial aspects of fertility, infertility, and assisted reproductive technology (ART) can significantly impact patients' sense of self-identity and personal agency, mental well-being, sexual and marital relationships, reproductive efficiency, compliance with treatment, and pregnancy outcomes. Research is needed to understand how stress, anxiety, depression, mood disorders, and psychotropic medications impact fertility and infertility treatment. The psychosocial implications of ART on our society include a shift toward older maternal age at conception, the complexities of third-party repro

[Assisted procreation for male indication].

Strategy for male infertility looks like a compromise between diagnosis methods with their efficacy and complexity and treatment with their own risks, cost, efficacy. Infertility duration as well as woman's fertility play a key role for such a strategy. Definitive infertility without any correction (secretory azoospermia) will be proposed for alternate projects. Some situations may benefit from specific therapy (hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, anejaculations or retrograde ejaculation). More frequently male hypofertility is suspected with non specific sperm alterations, then assisted reproductiv

Polymorphic microsatellite markers demonstrate hybridization and interspecific gene flow between lumbricid earthworm species, Eisenia andrei and E. fetida.

The lumbricid earthworms Eisenia andrei (Ea) and E. fetida (Ef) have been used as model organisms for studies on hybridization. Previously they have been identified by species specific sequences of the mitochondrial COI gene of maternal origin ('a' or 'f') and the nuclear 28S gene of maternal/paternal origin ('A' or 'F'). In experimental crosses, these hermaphroditic species produce progeny of genotypes Ea (aAA), Ef (fFF) and hybrids (aAF and fFA) originating by self-fertilization or cross-fertilization. To facilitate studies on new aspects of the breeding biology and hybridization of earthwor

The fertility cascade: infertility prevalence, access to treatment, and successful live birth.

BACKGROUND: Access to fertility care in the United States is limited by availability of services, inadequate insurance coverage, restrictive legislation, and social determinants of health. Despite increasing demand for fertility services, national estimates of fertility care utilization and outcomes-particularly across sociodemographic groups-remain poorly characterized. OBJECTIVE: To quantify infertility awareness, treatment access, and live birth using a cascade of care framework, overall and by sociodemographic characteristics. STUDY DESIGN: We used a cascade of care framework to estimate

The status and influencing factors of pressure on women of childbearing age to have a child again: A cross-sectional study in China.

BACKGROUND: Persistently low fertility and rapid population aging have increased concern regarding subsequent childbearing in China. Although fertility intentions have been widely examined, the multidimensional pressure experienced by parous women when considering another child remains insufficiently understood. METHODS: An online cross-sectional survey was conducted from January to June 2025 among 2097 parous women aged 18-49 years across 21 provinces and four municipalities in China. Subsequent fertility pressure was assessed using a validated 24-item scale. Guided by Becker's quantity-qual

Cryopreservation of spermatogonial stem cells: an overview of cryoprotectants.

Spermatogonial stem cells (SSC) are adult stem cells within the testis that play an essential role in spermatogenesis and are critical for male fertility. SSC are highly susceptible to cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, resulting in impaired spermatogenesis, which ultimately leads to subfertility or male infertility. In adults, freezing of sperm represents a mature and reliable method for fertility preservation. Considering the absence of mature spermatogonia in the testes of prepubertal children, SSC cryopreservation and transplantation may be an ideal approach for ferti

Sexual selection drives the speciation of lineages with contrasting mating systems.

Repeated shifts in ecological strategies often lead to consistent speciation patterns across phylogenies. One example is the transition from outcrossing to self-fertilization in plants, which generally results in the reproductive isolation of the incipient selfing lineages. However, the evolutionary mechanisms driving their speciation remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigate the hybridization rate and barriers to gene flow between the recently evolved selfing lineage Capsella rubella and its outcrossing ancestor C. grandiflora. Through a survey of sympatric populations in Greece

'If I had known the fertility health facts sooner…' Knowledge gaps as a barrier to effective fertility management: findings from the understanding fertility management in contemporary Australia survey.

Background: Optimal fertility management enables women and men to avoid and achieve conception and parenthood when desired. A lack of knowledge about sexual, reproductive and fertility matters may impede a person's ability to manage their fertility effectively. Little is known about current gaps in fertility knowledge among Australians. Purpose: To identify information and knowledge gaps about fertility management among women and men of reproductive age living in Australia. Method: A sample of 18- to 50-year-old women and men (N = 2235) randomly recruited from the Australian Electoral Roll in

[Nitrate nitrogen leaching and residue of humic acid fertilizer in field soil].

To elucidate the potential influence of humic acidfertilizer on groundwater and soil quality in clay soil (CS) and sandy soil (SS), nitrate nitrogen leaching and residue of different fertilizers in field soil were studied using a self-made leaching field device. Nitrate nitrogen concentration in leaching water of fertilizer treatments was 28.1%-222.2% higher than that of non-nitrogen treatment in different times, but humic acid fertilizer could prevent nitrate nitrogen leaching both in CS and SS, especially in CS. Nitrate nitrogen concentration of leaching water in CS was 41.2%-59.1% less than
