Magnetic resonance imaging finding of empty sella in obesity related idiopathic intracranial hypertension is associated with enlarged sella turcica.

INTRODUCTION: Empty sella in MRI is an important finding associated with idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH). This study assesses the sensitivity and reproducibility of several morphological measures of the sella and pituitary gland to indentify the measure that best differentiates IIH from controls. Additionally, the study assesses reversal in gland compression following treatment. METHODS: Sagittal 3D-T1W sequence with 1 mm isotropic resolution was obtained from ten newly diagnosed IIH patients and 11 matched healthy controls. Follow-up MRI scans were obtained from eight patients at

Shape and Morphology of the Sella Turcica in Patients with Trisomy 21-A Systematic Review.

Background/Objectives: The sella turcica (ST) is a central craniofacial and endocrinological landmark whose morphology reflects both local skeletal development and systemic influences. Alterations in its form have been observed in various genetic syndromes, including trisomy 21 (Down syndrome, DS). Considering the characteristic craniofacial morphology of DS, this review aimed to evaluate whether individuals with DS present distinctive morphometric features and shape variants of the ST compared with non-syndromic populations and to discuss their diagnostic and clinical relevance. Methods: A sy

Factors associated with osteophytosis on the sella turcica: related morphological and morphometrical aspects.

The sella turcica, part of the sphenoid bone located at the base of the skull, is associated with multiple important neurovascular structures. Hence, a detailed knowledge of its variations is critical to clinicians who interpret imaging or surgeons who operate in this region. Our aim was to better understand the pathology of osteophytosis, often found related to the sella turcica. The study sample (n=1,083, human skulls) was obtained from the skeleton collection housed in the Natural History Museum, Cleveland, OH, USA. All skulls were assessed for osteophytes in the sella turcica region (defin

Relationship of the Morphology and Size of Sella Turcica with Dental Anomalies and Skeletal Malocclusions.

This study aimed to assess the relationship of the morphology and size of the sella turcica (ST) with dental anomalies and skeletal malocclusions. This cross-sectional study was conducted on records of fixed orthodontic patients treated between 2013 and 2022. Cephalometric analysis was performed to determine the anteroposterior and vertical skeletal patterns. Preoperative panoramic radiographs and lateral cephalograms, intraoral photographs, and primary dental casts of patients were used to detect dental anomalies. Gender, sagittal and vertical skeletal patterns, dental anomalies, and dimensio

[Primary empty sella turcica. Analysis of 14 cases and review of the literature].

14 patients (13 women, 1 man) presenting with primary empty sella had endocrinologic and radiological investigations. 8 women are obese, 5 multiparous. Initially, headaches have needed a radiological study of sella turcica in 8 cases (57%). Pneumoencephalography and/or CT scan have led to diagnosis; but in 3 cases, a suspected associated pituitary adenoma justified a surgical exploration. In one case, a GH-secreting microadenoma was found, in both other cases histologic studies revealed fibrous or normal pituitary. Endocrine findings were normal, regarding to gonadotrophs, corticotrophs and th

Volume of sella turcica in normal subjects and in patients with primary hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.

In an attempt to assess a possible relationship between pituitary size and TSH secretion, the volume of sella turcica was measured in 570 subjects, 26 primary hypothyroid patients, and 34 thyrotoxic patients. The volume of sella turcica, measured by a 3-dimensional approach, increased progressively with age until 20 years of age and was rather constant thereafter in normal subjects. In thyrotoxic patients, the volume of sella turcica was normal in spite of decreased plasma TSH concentration. In contrast, 81% of primary hypothyroid patients had an abnormal enlargement of the sella turcica. The

Relationship between sella turcica morphology and dentofacial anomaly - a three-dimensional analysis.

BACKGROUND: This cohort study aimed to evaluate the relationship between sella turcica (ST) morphology and dentofacial anomalies three-dimensionally (3D). METHODS: Cone beam computed tomograms (CBCTs) and computed tomography scans (CTs) of 90 adults (46 women; age 28.1 ± 11.3 years) were analyzed. Dentofacial anomalies were evaluated (1) sagittally regarding skeletal classes (Wits appraisal), (2) vertically regarding the inclination of the jaws (maxillomandibular plane angle), and (3) transversally regarding skeletal symmetry (menton deviation from midsagittal plane). Sella morphology was ass

Sella turcica and facial bones: Morphological integration in the human fetal cranium.

OBJECTIVES: The cranial base plays a significant role in facial growth, and closer analyses of the morphological relationship between these two regions are needed to understand the morphogenesis of the face. Here, we aimed to study morphological integration between the sella turcica (ST) and facial bones during the fetal period using geometric morphometrics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Magnetic resonance images of 47 human fetuses in the Kyoto Collection, with crown-rump lengths of 29.8-225 mm, were included in this study. Anatomical homologous landmarks and semilandmarks were registered on the fa

Sella Turcica Size in Women with Sheehan Syndrome-A Case-Control Study.

INTRODUCTION: Sheehan syndrome is a common cause of hypopituitarism in developing countries. Among risk factors, in addition to post-partum haemorrhage, a smaller sellar volume is also believed to predispose to pituitary necrosis. Some earlier studies have reported smaller sellar volume in these patients but involved a small number of patients and lacked matched controls. The main of the present study was to study the sellar volume in a large cohort of patients with Sheehan syndrome and compare it with age- and parity-matched controls. METHODS: Fifty women with Sheehan syndrome and an equal n

Cushing's Disease Associated With Partially Empty Sella Turcica Syndrome: A Case Report.

The association between empty sella turcica (EST) syndrome and Cushing's disease has been rarely reported. It is plausible to hypothesize that EST syndrome in association with Cushing's disease can be attributed to intracranial hypertension. In this case report, we present a 47-year-old male patient who presented with weight loss, fatigue, easy bruising, acanthosis nigricans, and skin creases hyperpigmentation. Investigations revealed hypokalemia and confirmed the diagnosis of Cushing's disease. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain showed a partial EST syndrome and a new pituitary nodule as

Association Between Variations In Sella Turcica Dimensions And Morphology And Skeletal Malocclusions.

BACKGROUND: The growth of sella turcica is completed early in life, therefore it can be used as a stable landmark for the prediction of future skeletal malocclusions. This early diagnosis may help in planning less complicated treatment modalities. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the relationship between sella turcica dimensions and morphology with various skeletal patterns. METHODS: A cross sectional study was conducted using the pre-treatment cephalograms of 180 subjects aged 13-19 years. The subjects were divided into two groups based on skeletal patterns. The dimensions of sella tu

The sella turcica in Sheehan's syndrome: computerized tomographic study in 54 patients.

A CT scan study of the sella turcica and its contents was conducted in patients with Sheehan's syndrome with a search for correlation between the radiological data and the degree of endocrine insufficiency on one hand, and the time course of the disease on the other. Fifty-four patients with Sheehan's syndrome were included: 32 with complete anterior hypopituitarism, 22 with at least one spared pituitary function. Subgroups of equal size were obtained with a cut-off of 9 years evolution. The CT scan appearance of the pituitary was never normal in Sheehan's syndrome. The sella turcica was total

Sella turcica erosion and transient hypogonadism in the multiple endocrine deficiency syndrome.

A 42-year-old man presented with clinical and biochemical evidence of hypothyroidism, hypoadrenalism, and hypogonadism. Initial diagnostic studies suggested intrinsic pituitary disease and were supported by the finding of a roentgenographically abnormal sella turcica. Detailed endocrine evaluation subsequently showed normal pituitary function and primary target organ deficiencies. Adrenal and thyroid hormone replacement resulted in complete resolution of clinical symptoms and abnormalities of gonadal function. Thorough endocrine evaluation is needed in patients with multiple endocrine deficien

Transoral robotic-assisted skull base surgery to approach the sella turcica: cadaveric study.

Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) offers new possibilities that have not been experimented in the field of minimally invasive skull base neurosurgery. We propose to evaluate the feasibility of transoral approach to the sella turcica with the da Vinci system on cadavers. We performed four robot-assisted dissections on human fresh cadavers in order to reach the pituitary fossa by the oral cavity. Cavum mucosa dissection was performed by the head and neck surgeon at the console and then the sphenoid was drilled by the neurosurgeon at the bedside, with intraoperative fluoroscopy and a "double surge
